    Upscale community with excellent care

I chose this community for its beautiful, immaculately kept grounds and hotel-style rooms with big windows and thoughtful design. The staff are compassionate, consistent, and attentive, meals are excellent with a great chef and gracious dining team, and there are abundant activities, on-site therapy, pool/exercise options and reliable transportation. It's an upscale, secure CCRC with premium pricing, but I feel well cared for and would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The Covington is presented as a small, upscale skilled-nursing and continuing-care community with a strong emphasis on personalized, hotel‑style living. Many accounts emphasize a clean, attractive physical environment — landscaped grounds, large windows, private bathrooms and spacious rooms — combined with consistent nursing coverage and physician rounds. The small size (24-bed skilled-nursing unit) and reported low nurse-to-resident ratio are frequently credited with enabling individualized attention and continuity of care.

Care and staff: Reviews commonly describe caring, compassionate staff and skilled nursing support, with on-site therapy and rehab-friendly programming. Several comments note regular physician rounds and staff who know residents well. At the same time, there are contrasting accounts about clinical practice consistency; a minority of reviewers raised concerns about aspects of clinical technique and staff performance. Prospective families should verify current staffing levels, training protocols, and infection-prevention practices during a visit.

Dining: Dining impressions are mixed. Many reviewers praise an accomplished chef, an impressive dining room, a dietitian on staff, and willingness to accommodate special diets. Other accounts note difficulty finding appealing choices and weight-loss concerns for some residents. This pattern suggests variability in day-to-day meal execution or menu fit for particular tastes; a tasting of typical meals and review of menu rotation is advisable.

Activities and amenities: The Covington offers a broad activity program — exercise classes, indoor pool programming, happy hours, library and faith-based gatherings — plus social touches such as coffee carts, books/videos, and pet visits. The campus features attractive outdoor areas, nature trails and courtyards, and some units offer freestanding apartments, garages and full-kitchen options as part of its CCRC model. Transportation to appointments is available, which supports continuity of outpatient care.

Facilities and management: Physical facilities are consistently described as elegant and well planned, with hotel-style finishes in many units. However, several reviewers noted variability in management responsiveness and maintenance follow-through, including occasional temporary amenity closures or construction. The community’s location on a hilltop provides views and quiet but may feel remote for families who prefer close proximity.

Financial considerations and notable patterns: The community operates a high-end CCRC model with a substantial entrance fee (examples cited around $1M) and significant monthly maintenance charges (examples around $6,000), structured as a lifetime commitment with limited refund potential. This financial model is an important determinant of suitability for prospective residents. Review content shows an overall positive orientation toward staff and setting paired with two clear tradeoffs: cost and some variability in dining and management/clinical consistency. Visitors should tour multiple unit types, sample meals, review staffing and maintenance policies, and examine contract and refund terms to confirm fit for clinical needs and financial expectations.

    About The Covington

The Covington, found in Aliso Viejo, sits in a peaceful Shea Homes planned neighborhood with lots of sunshine and ocean breezes, and covers twelve green acres with secure, gated grounds. The community stays open every day from 9 in the morning to 5 in the evening, and the friendly staff make residents feel welcome. The place offers a variety of living options for adults aged 62 and older, including Independent Living Cottages, Independent Living Units, Assisted Living units, and a Skilled Nursing Facility, all licensed and supported by The Episcopal Home Communities, a non-profit group. There's a real sense of security here, with a gated entry and a wireless Emergency Call system that uses pendants, intercoms, emergency buttons, and motion detectors, and staff are always around if help is needed. The Covington focuses on a full continuum of care, so residents can get Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Skilled Nursing, along with daily assistance, medication help, and injury recovery support if that's ever needed.

Meals here are prepared by chefs and meal planners who focus on nutritious, good-tasting food, and there are several dining spots to choose from. Residents can take part in lots of activities, including devotional gatherings, both onsite and offsite social events, and art projects involving painting or sculpture, and there's a Creative Living program that encourages everyone to stay engaged, keep learning, and imagine new experiences. The community has many amenities, like a heated indoor pool, beauty salon, library, TV studio, fitness and wellness centers, art studio with a kiln, putting green, billiards and card room, cocktail lounge, mini-store, ATM, business offices, classroom, and a conference room. Outdoor spaces include a rose garden, a community garden, fountains, and a park, all well-kept and easy to use. Every home or apartment comes with satellite TV, high-speed internet, and access to a secure, two-level underground garage. Residents enjoy privacy and choice, with many floor plans and spacious homes available, plus the comfort of knowing there's 24-hour supervision and a creative team focused on quality of life. The Covington is a Life Plan community, which means people have peace of mind about future care, and there's a 90% re-occupancy benefit with the entrance fee for Independent Living. The grounds, amenities, and restrooms are kept clean and safe, and the community works with nearby medical providers, including pharmacy access through Walgreens and medical care at places like Laguna Niguel Family Medical. The Covington sits among other senior communities but stands out for its focus on creative living, quality care, and a comfortable, active setting with caring staff and a choice of living and service options for all needs.
