    Great community, but medication concerns

I moved my mom in and overall the place is beautiful, spotlessly clean, well run and full of friendly, professional staff - great activities, good food, strong memory-care programming and a warm, social community that helped her settle in. That said, we had serious medication problems (missed/delayed doses and poor communication), some instances of money-driven or unresponsive staff, and higher-than-expected third-party costs. On balance I trust the competent, caring team and the lively, safe environment, but confirm med handling and billing before committing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Carlton Senior Living Davis are predominantly positive, with a strong majority of reviewers praising the staff, the quality of care (especially memory care), the activities program, and the facility itself. Many reviewers describe the community as clean, modern, and well-maintained — often comparing it to a hotel-like environment — and consistently highlight the compassionate, professional, and attentive nature of the caregiving team. Several reviewers explicitly state that their loved ones are thriving, with strong social connections, improved mood, and a sense of belonging.

Care quality and staff: Care and staffing are the most frequently lauded aspects. Reviewers repeatedly note that staff know residents by name, are patient, treat residents with dignity, and proactively address needs. Memory care and Alzheimer's services receive specific praise for being innovative and well-run; multiple families reported successful memory-care transitions and trusted the staff with complex needs. There are numerous anecdotes about staff going above and beyond — planning personalized activities (e.g., planting a rose bush), helping residents engage with life, and maintaining effective family communication. That said, a minority of reviews report significant lapses (allegations of neglect, poor responsiveness, or staff motivated by money), indicating inconsistency in experience for a small number of residents.

Facilities and amenities: The physical campus is commonly described as attractive, modern, and tastefully decorated. Positive mentions include large, airy common areas, a lovely dining room, a big library, a Bridge room, a grand living room with piano, private dining spaces, an on-site movie theater, hair salon/beauty parlor, fitness room, and pleasant outdoor areas and gardens. The building layout and accessible corridors (grab bars) are noted as supportive for residents with mobility needs. Apartments are generally described as functional, clean, and well-kept, though often small — many reviews say private rooms or studios are compact while common areas are capacious. A few reviewers noted that some rooms are under construction or that available options were limited, and a couple of reviewers said the building looked different in person than in photos.

Dining: Dining is another area with generally positive but mixed feedback. Many reviewers complimented the chef and the variety of homestyle, eye-appealing meals and praised special meals and personalized dining service. Frequent references to enjoying meals in the dining room and small personalized touches (name cards, special lunches) suggest strong dining engagement. However, there are also repeated complaints about portion sizes being small or “tiny,” some comments that meals felt canned or substandard, and a few reviewers experienced inconsistent food quality. Overall, dining appears to be a strength for many but with notable variability in satisfaction.

Activities and social life: Activities are consistently described as abundant, diverse, and well-structured. Typical offerings cited include Mahjong, Bingo, Bridge, exercise and movement classes, crafts, sing-alongs, happy hours, cooking classes, cultural outings (e.g., Mondavi Center), movie nights, Lunch Club, and scenic drives. The activities director receives frequent praise for creativity and engagement. Reviewers highlight that the community supports varying activity levels (stimulating and slower-paced options), encourages socialization among an intellectually engaged resident population, and provides meaningful, frequent opportunities to participate in the wider community.

Operations, management and concerns: While the dominant narrative is positive, important operational concerns appear in several reviews and merit attention. Notable issues include medication administration errors and delays (examples include meds not sent with a patient, only a subset of prescribed medications given, refusal to administer evening meds, and lengthy ER waits), occasional unresponsiveness or poor communication from staff or management (including at least one report of a blocked call), and complaints around billing or perceived money-driven decisions and daily rent charges. A small number of reviewers reported that the facility did not match expectations or photos, experienced messy rooms, or felt the staff were neglectful. These problems are described as isolated but serious when they occur; they temper otherwise strong recommendations and suggest variability in consistency or oversight.

Value and logistics: Cost is a recurring theme. Several reviewers urge prospective residents to consider budget impacts: many feel the community provides good value for the quality of staff and amenities, but others emphasize that pricing is high, with mentions of expensive third-party care and higher monthly charges. Parking limitations, limited room availability, and occasional construction are operational details mentioned by multiple reviewers. On a practical level, reviewers praise the location (near medical services and police), the easy move-in process for many, and the availability of comprehensive services on site.

Overall impression and guidance: In aggregate, reviews portray Carlton Senior Living Davis as a well-run, warm, and engaging community with particularly strong memory care, a compassionate and proactive staff, a vibrant activities program, and attractive common areas and amenities. The most consistent negatives are small private apartment sizes, periodic issues with food portions/quality, cost concerns, and a small number of serious service failures (medication errors, neglect claims, communication breakdowns). Prospective residents and families should tour the property, meet caregiving and management staff, ask specific questions about medication administration protocols, staffing ratios and escalation procedures, confirm pricing and any third-party charges, and inspect sample apartments to ensure the unit size and condition meet expectations. For many families — especially those seeking strong memory care and active daily programming in a clean, modern setting — reviewers overwhelmingly recommend Carlton, while advising careful review of medication handling and contract/billing details to avoid the occasional negative outlier experience.
