    Warm attentive memory care praised

I placed my loved one here and have been very pleased - the staff are warm, attentive, and knowledgeable about memory care, the small, home-like setting with lovely gardens and beachside grounds feels safe and comforting, and activities are plentiful. Meals are delicious (Chef José deserves praise), move-in and hospice support were handled compassionately, and overall it gives me real peace of mind; I'd recommend it to families.

    Summary of reviews

Sun and Sea Assisted Living is described overall as a small, beachside assisted‑living community with a clear strength in memory‑care services and a strong emphasis on personalized, home‑style caregiving. Reviewers consistently highlight compassionate, attentive staff, a favorable staff‑to‑resident ratio, and a calm, home‑like atmosphere. Several accounts point to effective memory‑care programming and 24‑hour support, and families frequently cite peace of mind, smooth move‑ins, and helpful hospice resources when end‑of‑life care is needed.

Dining and activities are frequently noted as positives. The facility’s culinary staff receives praise for home‑style, satisfying meals, and musical and group activities — including opportunities for residents to play instruments — are common. Programming appears active and oriented toward engagement, and the small community size supports more individualized attention and respite for caregivers.

The property and setting are appealing to many: reviewers mention pleasant outdoor areas and gardens, a beachside location with mild weather, and generally clean, well‑kept interiors. Management is described as personable and informative by multiple families, and the admissions experience is reported as smooth and well coordinated.

At the same time, there are recurring operational concerns prospective families should evaluate. Some reviewers describe inconsistent responsiveness to resident requests and occasional slow response times; linked to that are communication and handoff gaps among staff that can produce variability in day‑to‑day care. While many families report excellent care, others describe mixed experiences, suggesting unevenness in service consistency. Physical‑plant issues also appear: rooms are characterized as small and somewhat cramped with limited options for personalization, and the building shows signs of aging compared with more modern facilities.

Safety and cost are additional considerations. A few reviewers raised concerns about unsecured outdoor access and wandering risk, indicating that families with residents who have a high fall or elopement risk should review the facility’s current safety protocols. Several reviewers also perceive the pricing as relatively high given the condition and size of some rooms; prospective residents should compare accommodations and fees carefully.

In summary, Sun and Sea offers notable strengths in memory care, individualized attention, meal quality, and a welcoming small‑community environment. These advantages are balanced against operational issues such as responsiveness variability, staff communication gaps, limited resident room space, and an aging building. Families seeking strong memory‑care support in a home‑like, beachside setting will find many positive elements here, but should perform targeted due diligence on safety practices, staffing consistency, and accommodation size before making a placement decision.

About Sun and Sea Assisted Living

Sun And Sea Assisted Living sits in a quiet residential neighborhood in Imperial Beach, CA, near the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by tall trees, mature gardens, and flowering plants, where you'll find a cozy home atmosphere with indoor and outdoor spaces all on one level, which makes it easy for everyone to get around, and where, in the garden room with its big windows or the living room with a fireplace and piano, people gather for music, conversation, or just to relax. The community places a strong focus on love and kindness, making sure staff and residents feel like family, with caregivers who give personalized, gentle care and always remain attentive-checking on medications regularly, helping with daily routines, and being there day and night, with five staff on duty during the day and two at night, and, while there's a nurse available on call and several health professionals like a physical therapist or dentist stopping by, the facility doesn't provide round-the-clock licensed nursing care on site.

The facility supports seniors in assisted living and specializes in residential memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, providing secure areas with a gated courtyard and a perimeter fence, so residents with memory loss can walk safely along shaded paths and open walkways, and the staff, who have specific training in memory care, use care plans for each person and include activities that keep minds engaged, social programs, and an activities calendar filled with events, games, music, art, and devotional services, with seven days a week programming that draws in both residents and families to spend time together for meals and special occasions. Meals are home-cooked, served three times daily in a cheerful dining area, with snacks and drinks offered in the morning and afternoon, and the kitchen handles vegetarian diets for those who need them-receiving recognition for "Best Meals and Dining" along with awards for "Best Activities" and "Most Friendly."

There are 16 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms for up to 32 residents, with both private and shared rooms available, starting at $4,600 for private and $3,300 for shared rooms, plus a $1,500 pre-admission fee, and the facility keeps things clean, has a separate housekeeping team, and follows a strict no smoking policy in all public and indoor spaces. Additional services available include hospice, respite care, physical therapy, podiatry, on-site religious and wellness programs, beauty salon, manicurist, and visits from a mobile physician, and there's a van for free transportation. Pets can join, and family is welcome to participate in meals and activities.

Safety's always on the mind, with a secure perimeter and safety features fitting for those with memory impairments, while social and mental well-being get support from group activities, games, community events, and holiday celebrations. The community aims for a comfortable lifestyle, with a focus on comfort, health, and a loving sense of belonging. Sun And Sea Assisted Living, part of Viva Assisted Living Communities, strives to be a place where people can maintain their independence as long as possible, enjoying meaningful days, home-cooked food, and the company of caring staff and fellow residents.
