    Homey attentive care with issues

I've lived here nearly three years. It's a small, homey, immaculate place with warm, family-like caregivers who are attentive and supportive, tasty home-cooked meals and fresh fruit/veggies, varied daily activities, and easy access to doctors. My main drawbacks: occasional temper issues and some mismanaged/incorrect pharmacy accounts and related dishonesty - despite that, I still recommend the loving staff and overall care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Astoria Retirement is predominantly positive, with multiple reviewers emphasizing a warm, family-like atmosphere, attentive caregiving, and well-maintained, homey accommodations. The most frequent themes are the compassionate nature of the caregivers and aides, a small facility size that enables close attention to residents, and an administrator who is described as supportive. Several reviewers explicitly state they would recommend the community and note long-term resident satisfaction, including one who had lived there nearly three years.

Care quality and staff: Reviews consistently praise the caregivers and aides as kind, loving, and attentive, creating a family-like environment. Words used across summaries include warm, caring, respectful, and attentive. This suggests staff-resident interactions are a strong point and that personalized, hands-on care is a defining characteristic of the community. One review also cites sufficient staffing levels and close attention given the smaller size, reinforcing the perception of reliable day-to-day support. However, there is a notable outlier that reports problems with staff temper and dishonesty, which indicates that while staff behavior is generally a strength, prospective residents and families should be aware that negative interpersonal incidents have occurred.

Facilities and management: The facility is described as small, homey, and immaculate, which aligns with multiple reviewers noting a welcoming atmosphere and comfortable accommodations. Several reviewers explicitly call the community well-managed and state that residents are well cared for. The small scale appears to be an organizational strength, allowing staff to deliver individualized attention. That said, management concerns surface in one review describing mismanaged pharmacy accounts and dishonesty, a serious administrative issue. This single but significant complaint contrasts with the otherwise strong managerial praise and suggests variability in administrative reliability or at least an isolated but impactful failure in administrative processes.

Dining and activities: Dining receives uniformly positive remarks — meals are described as home-cooked, tasty, and appealing, with a good variety that includes fruits and vegetables. Multiple reviewers mention appealing and well-prepared meals as a highlight. Activity programming is also positively noted, with references to daily and varied activities that contribute to a pleasant atmosphere and resident engagement. These consistent comments indicate that both nutrition and programming are strengths likely to support resident wellbeing and satisfaction.

Patterns and recommendations: The aggregate picture is of a small, well-kept retirement home with warm staff, strong personal care, quality meals, and active engagement for residents. Most reviewers highly recommend Astoria Retirement. Nevertheless, the review citing pharmacy/account mismanagement, temper issues, and dishonesty is an important counterpoint; it raises concerns about medication management and staff conduct that could have serious consequences. Because that complaint is significantly more severe than the other, generally positive remarks, prospective residents and families should verify medication handling procedures, ask about pharmacy/account oversight, and inquire about staff training and incident reporting policies during tours.

Bottom line: Astoria Retirement appears to offer compassionate, attentive care in a small, clean, and homey setting with good meals and activities, and many satisfied residents and families. To be thorough, visitors should pay particular attention to administrative safeguards — especially around medications and billing — and observe staff interactions directly to ensure the positive patterns reported in most reviews are present in their specific experience.

    About Astoria Retirement

Astoria Retirement sits in Newport Beach, California, and serves as a Continuing Care Retirement Community that takes in up to 6 residents in a small, home-like setting, which makes everything a lot more personal, kind of like a big family under one roof, with staff always nearby. The staff at Astoria Retirement provide different levels of care-there's Assisted Living, Memory Care, Independent Living, Nursing Home care, and specialized Adult Care Home support, and the place is licensed by the state to make sure everything stays above board and safe. Residents get support with medication, three meals a day that staff cook on-site to fit different diets, and snacks when someone's hungry, with companion visits and 24-hour supervision to help with Alzheimer's care or any other memory problems-there are also alarm systems for added safety.

Physical therapy, speech therapy, and on-site podiatrist visits are available, and there's a beautician and manicure services if someone wants them. Staff can help arrange daily nurse or doctor check-ins when folks need medical care, and memory care includes tailored programs for dementia and Alzheimer's needs. Housekeeping and laundry are included, along with private rooms where residents can have their own space. Everyone gets Wi-Fi and cable TV, and activities are planned for groups, meals, or quiet time, with live-in care providers helping with day-to-day tasks like bathing and managing medications or handling incontinence care. Long-term stays, respite care, and hospice care are available, and you'll find high acuity care in case someone has more serious health needs. Ambulatory and non-ambulatory seniors both fit in well here, and the fall risk management program tries to keep everyone steady, so slips aren't as likely.

The place keeps things comfortable and friendly, without much stress or formality, and, because the community's so small, staff know every resident by name, with a focus on personal support rather than big crowds. Astoria Retirement has its unique service names and terms, but the basics come down to making sure older folks have what they need-safe care, comfort, meals, and some company-whether for a short stay or long-term living. It's important to note Astoria Retirement isn't BBB accredited, but the facility offers a broad range of services, and staff are always present day and night. There isn't much extra information on Astoria Retirement, but the main features cover personalized care, safety, and a warm, boutique setting for a handful of seniors.
