    Overpriced unclean uncaring inconsistent care

I placed my loved one here and had a mixed but mostly negative experience. The facility felt overpriced, often smelled of urine, had small/dirty rooms and a locked-down, soulless atmosphere; management was unresponsive and many staff were rude, harsh, and treated residents without dignity. There were caring staff, kind owners, and tasty meals, but the inconsistent, unprofessional care led us to file a complaint and move to a place that respects residents. I cannot recommend this facility.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is highly mixed and polarized: reviews contain both strong praise and serious allegations. Several reviewers describe Lakeshore Residential Care as providing excellent, high-level care with caring, responsive staff, kind owners, clean facilities, and good meals. Those positive reports highlight social opportunities (a small community of about 38 residents), a puzzle room, room to walk, private rooms with private bathrooms, guest meals, and follow-up support from Place for Mom. At least one reviewer explicitly called the facility an excellent option and noted strong client support and reputation.

Conversely, a substantial number of reviews allege significant problems with care, management, and the physical environment. Multiple reviewers reported poor or neglectful care, unprofessional and sometimes abusive staff behavior (yelling, cursing), and specific allegations of cruelty and mistreatment by the director. Some former residents or family members said they filed state complaints and moved the resident to another facility that treated them with more dignity. There are repeated claims of a locked-down atmosphere and residents being treated like criminals; two staff members were named in complaints (security "Tony" and office manager "Laura") in at least one review. Several reports describe a rude, unpleasant intake process, false intake reports, or threats of discharge.

Staffing and management impressions vary widely across reviews. A few reviews praise the owners and say there are lots of staff and a high level of care, while others describe the facility as understaffed, overpopulated, or staffed by people lacking competence. This inconsistency—some reviewers noting many staff and good work ethics, others noting small or ineffective staffing and mixed work ethic—suggests variability in staffing levels, training, shift coverage, or management practices that can affect resident experience day-to-day.

Facility and cleanliness comments are also contradictory. Positive reviewers mentioned a clean facility with busy cleaning staff and delicious meals, while negative reviewers reported urine odor, dirtiness, dark or gloomy areas, and inadequate meals (examples include being served cheese sandwiches). Room size is a recurring concern: multiple reviewers say rooms are small or cramped, and at least one reviewer commented that rooms are rooms rather than studio apartments. Pricing was flagged by several people as high or out of range for what is provided, even as one reviewer called it good value; again, opinions diverge.

Activities and community elements receive mostly positive mentions: social opportunities, a puzzle room, and guest meals are appreciated, and the smaller population size reported by some reviewers can support a more social environment. However, reviewers who experienced poor care or hostile staff reported that those benefits were outweighed by management or behavioral issues.

Communications and admissions issues appear in several critiques: website misrepresentation, false intake paperwork, lack of callbacks, and poor customer service were explicitly called out. One reviewer noted positive follow-up from Place for Mom, which indicates at least occasional external support during placement. The combination of alleged false representation and poor responsiveness has prompted some families to advise others to visit in person and verify claims before enrolling.

Patterns and recommendations based on these summaries: the reviews are sharply divided, indicating that experiences at Lakeshore Residential Care can vary substantially depending on timing, specific staff on duty, and possibly which unit or room a resident occupies. Positive reports emphasize caring staff, good meals, and a social small-community feel, while negative reports raise serious concerns about abuse allegations, unprofessional management, odors/cleanliness, understaffing, and inconsistent service quality. Prospective residents and families should treat these conflicting accounts as a cue to perform thorough, in-person due diligence: tour multiple rooms at different times of day, observe staff-resident interactions, ask about staffing ratios and turnover, review any state inspection reports or complaint histories, and verify admission paperwork matches what is represented online. If allegations of mistreatment or regulatory complaints are a concern, contacting state licensing or ombudsman offices for records and recommendations would be prudent. Overall, the facility may provide excellent care for some, but several reviewers report serious and potentially systemic issues that warrant careful investigation before committing.

    About Lakeshore Residential Care

Lakeshore Residential Care is a state-licensed assisted living and residential care home for older adults, License #015601408, in Oakland, California, right near hospitals, shopping areas, senior centers, and close to Lake Merritt, and what's good about this place is it sits on a single level and holds up to 38 residents, which makes things simple for moving around, especially for folks who use wheelchairs, since all the rooms and showers allow easy access, and then you've got both private and shared furnished rooms, each one set up with walk-in showers or full bathtubs, and you can bring a cat or dog since they accept pets here, which makes it feel a bit more like home for those who want to keep their old pal with them. Everyone gets three meals a day along with snacks available any time, and the dining services stay highly rated, so people don't have to worry about going hungry or feeling left out, and the staff also take care of all the housekeeping, laundry, and dry cleaning, so there's less to fuss about.

Residents can get help with bathing, dressing, medication management, and moving around, even if it takes two people or special lifts to assist, and a team of licensed nurses and aides is always there, watching out for each person, checking health, and coming up with personalized care plans, which works well for those living with dementia, diabetes, incontinence, or other chronic issues, and they also help with behavioral care, so everyone's needs get covered as those needs change over time and people can stay in the same community even as they need extra help. The memory care section sits in a separate, secure building, with technology such as bracelets and a wander alert system keeping folks safe if they tend to walk off, and the area is built to protect residents with Alzheimer's or other memory struggles, giving families some peace of mind.

Staff stay on site around the clock, always ready to respond to call buttons, and they offer continuous supervision and assistance, plus free transportation for doctor visits, shopping, or outings, since the building is close to a bus line and resident parking is available for those who still drive. There's a full calendar of activities set up by an Activity Director-folks can join fitness, creative, social, and spiritual groups each day, plus enjoy offsite trips, and the place even offers in-house religious services along with devotional time elsewhere. Amenities include a well-kept garden, walking paths, a stocked library, a barbershop and salon, and indoor lounges where people can spend time together or read a book.

People can smoke outdoors if they wish, and the atmosphere stays pretty cozy and peaceful, which helps everyone feel at ease, and because of the smaller size, residents usually get plenty of personal attention. The facility offers respite care for those needing a short stay, hospice for end-of-life support, and care for mild cognitive impairment, all with a focus on helping folks stay independent as long as possible. Staff work hard to maintain a high standard of cleanliness, and the environment is set up to support everyone's well-being, helping both body and mind so residents can reach their own best potential, even as circumstances change.
