    Homey care, but safety concerns

I have mixed feelings. I appreciate the home-like memory care, engaging activities, large tasty meals, beautiful courtyard and many genuinely caring staff - Lori and the new management made clear improvements and communication that gave me peace of mind. But the building is dated, maintenance and cleanliness are inconsistent (odors, bugs and some hygiene incidents reported), clinical support is limited (no RN/skilled nursing), staffing and safety have been problems in the past (scabies outbreak, malnutrition/hospitalization), and it's pricey. Do a careful tour, check infection and staffing records, and get contract details in writing - some families love it, others moved their loved ones out.

    About Rose Place Memory Care

Rose Place Memory Care sits in a quiet part of Stockton, close to two colleges and St. Joseph's Medical Center, and it's been around since 1993 when two sisters decided seniors needed a safe, healthy place built just for them, and it's still locally owned and operated today, which helps keep the focus on each resident's individual needs rather than being run like a big chain. The community is for seniors with memory loss like Alzheimer's and other kinds of dementia, and it's designed as a secure, locked facility with a special memory care building, so folks who tend to wander or have trouble knowing where they are can stay safe, and there's a computerized alert system that uses bracelets to let staff know if someone's about to go where it's not safe, and staff can handle residents who get upset or act out, including those with aggressive behaviors. They've got about 68 beds, with choices for private or semi-private rooms, and there are assisted living apartments with kitchenettes, private bathrooms, and individual climate control, so people can find a setup that suits how they like to live, and the buildings and grounds are neat and homelike with plenty of places to sit, whether outside on the walking paths or inside in the lounge or theater room for movies, which gives everyone some choices about where and how they spend the day, whether it's reading the paper or joining an activity. Staff are available around the clock and are specially trained for dementia and all the care that comes with it, and they help with everything from getting dressed to bathing, help with meals, reminders for medication, and just making sure residents are comfortable, and they do this with a level of patience and understanding that can be very important for this kind of care, and they support people who need mechanical lifts or have trouble walking, which lets folks stay even if their needs change. Everyone coming in gets an individualized evaluation so their care plan fits them as a person, not just as a diagnosis, so activities and therapies actually match what works for them, and activities cover a wide range including on-site brain fitness, cooking classes, intergenerational programs, trivia, karaoke, and devotional services off-site, with a full-time events coordinator putting together programs to keep minds and bodies active, and meals are freshly prepared by a professional chef with attention to dietary preferences like gluten-free, vegan, low-sodium, and even organic options, served restaurant-style in a pleasant dining room. There's weekly housekeeping and laundry, transportation can be arranged for appointments, and extras like an on-site beautician are available, which families often appreciate, and health professionals like podiatrists and therapists come visit as needed, so you don't lose touch with care just because you live there. Rose Place can handle a lot of care needs including aging in place, hospice support, respite care, diabetic management, incontinence support, and more, so residents are able to stay in familiar surroundings as long as possible. The atmosphere is described as friendly, helpful, and calm, with staff who treat everyone like people first, even when things get difficult. Rose Place Memory Care's review scores are about average at 3.3 out of 5, based on 22 reviews, which means it's not without its flaws but it's managed to help a good number of families along the way, and people do come to visit to see if it feels right for their loved one, with scheduled tours available so you can meet staff and see the grounds in person. It's not a Medicare-certified facility, so families do need to check on payment details, but many feel the individualized, secure environment and practical approach to dementia care offer real peace of mind, especially if behavioral or wandering concerns are a worry.
