    Compassionate attentive care with caveats

I placed my mom at Hillcrest and am relieved - the staff (especially Marian and several long-tenured caregivers) are warm, attentive and treat residents like family. The food is good, activities are nonstop (music, exercise, bingo, movies, outings) and the facility is very clean with helpful, responsive office staff. Rooms feel hotel-like with kitchenettes, balconies and nice views, but the building is older/dated (small showers, limited amenities, occasional elevator issues) and renovations are ongoing. Overall I highly recommend Hillcrest for compassionate, high-quality care and peace of mind, though be aware of cost and limited upfront pricing transparency.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with a very large proportion of reviewers praising the staff, the personal culture, and the breadth of services offered at Hillcrest Royale Retirement. The most consistent theme is the quality of the people who work there: reviewers repeatedly describe staff as kind, attentive, long-tenured, and family-like. Many reviews note individualized, compassionate care — staff knowing residents by name, going above and beyond (painting walls, installing kitchettes, offering hugs), and providing effective hands-on help such as medication management, dressing assistance, and support through transitions. Several reviewers explicitly said family members feel relief and peace of mind after choosing Hillcrest Royale, and many recommend the community to others because of the staff and care.

Activities and engagement are another strong positive. There is frequent mention of a full, daily activities calendar that includes exercise classes, music, bingo, arts & crafts, brain games, live singers, movie nights in an on-site theater, beauty salon services, and regular outings (including a restaurant outing about every three weeks) with shuttle service. Many residents appear happy and socially engaged; the community is described as vibrant and involving. Reviewers note both passive and active options for residents, and multiple accounts praise the entertainment and opportunities for socialization and fitness.

Dining and household services receive generally favorable mentions: most reviews praise the food, noting three meals a day plus snacks, customizable options, posted menus, and multiple food choices. Some reviewers specifically compliment the dining rooms (two dining halls with linen tablecloths). Additional conveniences called out include in-unit kitchenettes with refrigerator and sink, laundry service, sizeable closets, balconies with views, and a hotel-like apartment feel in many units. Staff-assisted move-ins and proactive follow-up from administration are highlighted as positive operational aspects.

However, a number of consistent concerns appear across reviews. Cost is a recurring issue: several reviewers characterize Hillcrest Royale as slightly higher priced or expensive, with at least a few noting price discrepancies and limited willingness to negotiate. Financial transparency during tours was mentioned as lacking by some. The physical plant is described as older or dated in multiple reviews — many note renovations are underway but other comments call parts of the building run down, with small showers in some units and at least one report of an unreliable elevator. A handful of reviewers described the facility as not the right fit for those seeking independence or a different level of services, suggesting the population skews older or more dependent in some wings.

There are a few isolated but notable negative issues: occasional dissatisfaction with meal quality from some reviewers (contrasting with many positive meal comments), sporadic reports of unfriendly or rude front-desk interaction, and at least one reviewer who found the tour experience insufficient or "dry." Location is a benefit for many (close to an outdoor mall) but inconvenient for others who live out of the area. While most reviewers praise the activities program, several asked for more variety and diversity in programming — a sign that while quantity of activities is high, offerings may feel repetitive to some residents.

In summary, Hillcrest Royale Retirement presents as a well-staffed, family-owned community that excels at personal attention, warmth, and resident engagement. Its strongest assets are its caring, long-tenured team, robust activity schedule, and the comforting, apartment-like living experience that many families find reassuring. The most important tradeoffs to weigh are cost and the age of the building: potential residents and families should expect a generally older/dated physical facility with some areas being renovated, potentially higher pricing with limited flexibility, and the occasional operational hiccup (e.g., elevator). Those priorities aside, the dominant reviewer impression is highly favorable — especially around staff quality, individualized care, and overall resident happiness — making Hillcrest Royale a recommended choice for families who value personal attention and active programming, while being mindful to confirm pricing and unit condition during the tour.

    About Hillcrest Royale Retirement

Hillcrest Royale Retirement is a family-run assisted living and retirement community that sits in a three-story building and has been operated for over thirty years by a mother and her two daughters, with staff who've worked there for decades and really know their residents. The community provides independent living and assisted living, with care designed for seniors who need some help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or taking medicine, but who don't need full-time nursing care, so you'll find nurses on staff, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy right there if needed, plus a doctor and dentist on call and podiatrists and therapists who visit regularly. Folks who live here can choose from furnished or unfurnished rooms, with studios and suites available, and there are both large living spaces and common areas throughout the building, inside and out, where residents and their guests can relax, watch movies in the on-site theater, or join social gatherings; there's also a dedicated dining room where three full meals are served daily, restaurant-style, with a variety of choices and a snack bar open twenty-four hours a day, and vegetarian meals for those who want them. The staff keeps things running smoothly with daily fresh bath linens, weekly housekeeping, and maintenance-free homes, and they're awake and available for emergencies all day and night. Hillcrest Royale offers supportive features like supervision of medication, help transferring from chair to wheelchair, help for diabetics including insulin therapy, standby help for folks who aren't ambulatory, and nurses to visit, though they do ask that residents needing incontinence care are able to manage by themselves. The community allows pets, and has beauty and barber services on site, plus indoor and outdoor spaces for gardening and relaxation, and the minimum age to move in is sixty. Activities are organized throughout the month and cover things like drama classes, music, gardening, group exercise, news forums, outings to museums, concerts, and restaurants, with a big sixteen-seat bus for trips; there are nightly Netflix showings and music therapy, too, and the leadership tries to keep the days varied to avoid boredom. People can smoke outside but not inside the building and there's a real focus on "aging in place," so when care needs increase, folks can stay where they are if possible. The community also offers hospice and respite services, devotional programs on-site, homecare, parking for residents, and complimentary or paid transportation, all in a location near bus lines. Hillcrest Royale prefers to admit people needing light or medium care-most residents fit this range-and the environment is homey, with each person's needs met as individually as possible in a safe and friendly setting, with an activity studio and a monthly newsletter to keep everyone in the loop about what's coming up.
