    Beautiful facility but understaffing concerns

I was impressed by the resort-like, brand-new facility - spotless apartments, lovely grounds and pool, excellent food, and a lively activities program (music therapy, exercise, movies). But I'm worried about chronic understaffing and inconsistent care: long call-bell waits, slow or missed meals, medication and transfer lapses, and some staff who seemed untrained or dismissive when I raised concerns. It's terrific for assisted living if you can afford it, but I wouldn't rely on it for higher-level memory care until staffing and training improve.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is mixed but centers on two clear themes: an exceptionally attractive, modern facility with strong programming and a warm atmosphere, and recurring operational problems—primarily staffing and service reliability—that materially affect resident care and safety. Many reviewers praise Belmont Village Calabasas for its physical environment: the building is repeatedly described as brand new, extremely clean, and resort-like, with well-appointed common areas, fresh flowers, seasonal decorations, and a variety of apartment layouts (including kitchens, terraces, and large bathrooms). Amenities such as a pool, gym, gardens, and outdoor walking areas receive consistent positive mention, as do organized activities including exercise classes, movies, music programs, and an active calendar that many residents and families appreciate. Dining presentation and food quality are frequently complimented as well, with some reviewers noting a meal ordering option and attractive dining spaces.

Staff receive highly variable assessments. A substantial number of reviews describe staff as warm, caring, professional, and helpful, contributing to a family-like atmosphere and giving families confidence—some specifically name staff who provided outstanding support. Music therapy and memory-care programming are highlighted as particularly effective by several reviewers, with named individuals and weekly visits singled out for praise. Multiple comments emphasize that residents benefit from enthusiastic, professional activity leaders that foster engagement and participation, especially in memory-care programming.

However, a significant and recurring set of concerns centers on staffing levels, responsiveness, and care reliability. Numerous reviews report chronic understaffing, long call-bell response times, slow dining service (including meals arriving cold), and not enough servers working shifts. Specific operational details appear in the complaints: glassware left dirty or with lipstick stains, only one washer/dryer per floor causing laundry delays, and instances where the kitchen was reportedly closed and residents were left without meals. More serious safety-related reports describe residents falling or being hurt because help was delayed, unsafe transfers that required multiple staff, and situations where toileting, dressing assistance, and medication attention were inadequate. Some reviewers characterize staff as undertrained, inattentive, or lacking compassion and patience. These issues are tied to allegations of neglectful care and dismissive responses from management when concerns are raised.

The reviews show notable inconsistency across experiences. While many families and residents rave about the facility, staff, activities, and cleanliness, others describe exactly the opposite in care quality and day-to-day operations. This variation suggests possible differences by unit, shift, or period (e.g., certain wings or times may be better staffed and managed than others). Management involvement is questioned by reviewers who feel complaints are not taken seriously or that leadership is not sufficiently present to address recurring problems. Cost is another theme: several reviewers acknowledge the high quality of the facility but note it is expensive or out of budget for many families.

In summary, Belmont Village Senior Living Calabasas appears to offer an appealing, upscale environment with robust programming, effective music and memory-care activities, and many staff who are kind and professional. At the same time, there are repeated operational and staffing complaints that have real consequences for resident comfort and safety—slow response times, dining service failures, laundry constraints, housekeeping inconsistencies, and reports of undertrained or inattentive caregivers. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong positives around facilities and programming against these reported reliability and staffing concerns, ask for specifics about staffing ratios and shift coverage, observe mealtime and care-response routines during tours, and request references or recent family feedback to get a clearer sense of current performance and management responsiveness.

The place allows residents to stay connected and safe with secure entryways and neighborhoods set up to avoid confusion and wandering for people with memory impairments.

Belmont Village Calabasas has partnerships with top hospitals and universities such as UCLA and the UC San Diego School of Medicine, bringing in advanced planning tools, unique research-backed programs, and training for staff. Therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy are available on-site. The team monitors health closely, offers diabetes and medication support, and helps with short-term stays after illness or surgery. Monthly rent starts at $6,350, but the price varies with the residents' needs. The community is reviewed well by residents and families, with a high community score of 9.9, and has a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly license. Owners and managers run the community themselves, focusing on quality, safety, and active, healthy living with Whole Brain Fitness, Joseph's Kitchen for nutrition, and enrichment programs like Circle of Friends.
