    Warm homey care, safety concerns

I placed my mom in this small, converted-house facility (10-12 residents) and found it warm, homey, very clean with new furnishings, homemade food, a lovely back garden/waterfall, lots of activities, and caring, dedicated staff who truly comforted and loved her. That said, I observed staff smoking on the property (a second incident) and experienced troubling signs of incompetence and dishonesty that left me worried about medication and resident safety. Overall I'm grateful for the love and care but would recommend it only with close oversight of staff behavior and safety.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the provided reviews for Desert Rose Elder Care, Inc. is predominantly positive about the environment, care culture, and physical setting, but there are notable and serious concerns raised in multiple summaries that prospective families should explicitly address. Many reviewers emphasize the small, home-like atmosphere and the sense that residents are loved and cared for, citing dedicated staff and owner involvement. However, several reviews mention issues around staff behavior and safety that contrast with the otherwise favorable impressions.

Care quality and staff: Multiple reviews highlight caring, respectful, and dedicated staff and an involved owner. Reviewers repeatedly say staff members are loving toward residents, attentive, and provide comfort; this is reinforced by comments that residents "love it," that family members were grateful, and that the staff made residents feel at home. These comments suggest that, for many families, the day-to-day personal care and emotional support are strong aspects of the facility. At the same time, other reviews raise serious concerns about staff competence and honesty — allegations of incompetence and lying — which suggest inconsistency in staff performance or the presence of isolated but significant negative incidents. Because both strong praise and stark criticism appear, the pattern indicates variability in staff behavior or supervision that prospective families should probe further.

Facilities, dining, and activities: The facility is consistently described as small (about 10–12 residents) and converted from a house, giving it a homey, intimate feel rather than an institutional one. Reviewers note clean rooms with new furnishings, a small dining area, and that the facility is very clean and well-kept. Specific amenities mentioned include a back garden, a waterfall feature, and an enclosed patio with outdoor seating, all of which contribute to a pleasant physical environment. Dining is positively noted: food made from scratch and home-cooked meals are highlighted, which can be a major quality-of-life factor. Additionally, several reviews mention that there are lots of activities for residents, and that families would recommend the facility, reinforcing the impression of an engaging, comfortable living environment.

Management and safety concerns: Despite the many positive comments about care and environment, the reviews contain alarming mentions that cannot be overlooked. There are multiple reports of staff smoking on the property, including a second reported incident, which raises questions about policy enforcement and resident safety (especially for residents with respiratory issues or mobility limitations). Other reviews explicitly call out staff incompetence and dishonesty, and one summary expresses a general "safety concerns for residents." Another review expressed concern about residents being on medications, which could point to worries about medication management or residents' medical conditions. These issues together suggest potential gaps in staff training, oversight, policy enforcement, or communication with families. Because these are serious allegations, they should be treated as priorities for follow-up rather than dismissed as isolated complaints.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The dominant positive themes are cleanliness, a home-like small setting, dedicated caregivers, home-cooked food, and attractive outdoor spaces. The dominant negative themes are staff-related: smoking on premises, questions about competence and honesty, and safety/medication concerns. This contrast suggests the facility may offer strong personal warmth and a good physical environment while potentially lacking consistency in staff conduct or operational safeguards. Prospective residents and families should visit in person, ask about staff training and turnover, request the facility's smoking policy and how it is enforced, inquire about medication management procedures and incident reporting, and seek references from current families. It may also be helpful to ask management how they respond to complaints and what improvements they have implemented in response to past incidents.

In summary, Desert Rose Elder Care, Inc. appears to provide a clean, home-like environment with caring staff and attractive amenities that many families appreciate. However, recurring and serious concerns about staff behavior, competence, honesty, smoking on the property, and medication/safety issues are important red flags that warrant direct questioning and verification during any evaluation or placement decision.
