    Warm attentive staff, excellent care

I placed my mom here and I'm very pleased - the staff are warm, attentive, and know residents by name; nursing, excellent physical and occupational therapy, housekeeping, and home-cooked meals give us real peace of mind. Activities, outings, and pleasant grounds make it feel like home; I recommend this caring, family-like community, with just a little room for improvement.

    Summary of reviews

Finnish-American Village presents as a small, family-oriented senior community with consistently positive assessments of direct care, social programming, and mealtime accommodations. Across the summaries the strongest and most persistent theme is the quality of staff: caregivers, CNAs, nurses and therapy teams are described as compassionate, attentive and skilled. Long staff tenure and low turnover were highlighted, contributing to continuity of care, individualized care plans, and frequent, clear communication with families. The facility also supports smooth transitions between assisted living and skilled nursing or rehab, with therapy services and nursing leadership credited for good rehab outcomes.

Dining and activities are core strengths. Many accounts praise home-cooked meals, special treats and attention to dietary restrictions; at the same time there is variability in how strongly food was liked, which suggests menu execution and variety may differ by meal or over time. Activity programming is broad and active: bingo, live music, arts and crafts, movies, outings to shops and zoos, and Finland‑centric cultural events. An accommodating activities director and opportunities for residents to help choose activities were noted as contributors to social engagement and well‑being.

The facility environment is frequently described as clean, cozy and home‑like, with pleasant outdoor spaces (patio, courtyard, garden) and light‑filled rooms. That said, reviewers consistently characterize the physical plant as older: dated décor, visible wear, and relatively small room footprints were mentioned. The facility’s smaller size yields a close, intimate community feel and personalized attention, but also limits high‑end amenities and modern finishes; several comments framed the property as lacking “bells and whistles.” Some practical issues were noted that pertain to operations and safety equipment—most notably concerns about the reliability of resident call buttons and occasional early or inflexible scheduling for routines.

Management and administration elicit mixed but generally positive impressions: as a non‑profit community it is viewed as mission‑driven and responsive, with administrative staff who resolve issues and support families. However, a few comments indicate variability in admissions/sales interactions and occasional concerns about upper‑level responsiveness or communication style. Activity continuity can be affected when leadership changes occur. Cost is sometimes described as high relative to the facility’s physical condition, which may matter for prospective residents weighing value versus modern amenities.

Overall, Finnish-American Village's primary strengths are its caregiving culture, rehabilitative services, robust activities and Finnish cultural programming, and a clean, homey environment that many families find comforting. Prospective residents who prioritize personalized care, social engagement, and cultural continuity will likely find it a good fit; those seeking newer facilities, larger rooms, or expanded luxury amenities should factor the building’s age and limited modernization into their decision.

    About Finnish-American Village

Finnish-American Village sits in a quiet, landscaped community and was founded in 1970 to serve senior members of the Finnish community, though adults aged 55 and older from any background are welcome, and it's a nonprofit place with a focus on care, support, and staying active. People can choose between independent living, assisted living, memory care, home care, or nursing home services here, and the options include studio apartments, assisted living suites in two sizes, and some low-income senior apartments. There're semi-private rooms, and some pets are allowed. The community is known for extended congregate care with added support and for names like Lepokoti-assisted living and the American-Finnish Nursing Home for skilled nursing care. Residents get help with bathing, dressing, grooming, medication, eating, and other daily activities from skilled staff, with 24-hour nursing supervision in many cases, and the place offers dementia and Alzheimer's care with specific programs for cognitive needs. You'll find a Finnish sauna, activity rooms, an exercise gym, creative arts, musical concerts, choirs, movies, and outings to local shops and attractions. The staff runs exercise classes, holiday celebrations, devotionals with communion, and inter-denominational services on site, so there are chances for spiritual and social life. They've got on-site skilled nursing, home health medical care, hospice, and in-home senior services for those needing help at home, and have a state-licensed Nurse Registry that provides a full range of services including live-in aides and homemaker companions. Care consultants give free advice, and there are financial help programs with information about Medicaid and Veterans Aid & Attendance benefits, to help some people manage costs for long-term care. You'll get everything but a telephone included in the fees, like cable TV, Wi-Fi, laundry and dry cleaning, scheduled housekeeping, linen service, building maintenance, and free transportation with minibuses that can take wheelchairs. Meals are made on site with a focus on good nutrition, there are barbers and beauty salons in the building, and residents can use the sauna and shower facilities, and there's always an urgent response system for emergencies. The American-Finnish Nursing Home is a Medicare and Medicaid-approved skilled nursing facility with more than 150 beds, physician oversight, and medication storage, providing high-level medical and rehab therapy, meeting federal quality standards. The grounds have gardens and quiet spaces, and apartments come with cable hookups, parking, and internet. Many services are à la carte, so residents can pick what they need, whether it's extra laundry, transportation, beauty care, or companion services. This community tries to encourage independence, dignity, and a sense of home, with licensed professionals overseeing health, wellness, and social care. Finnish-American Village offers tours for anyone who wants to see daily life, meals, and activities in person, and there's a simple contact form if you want to ask questions or get started.
