    Spacious resort-like community with dining

I live here and I'm very pleased - the staff are caring, professional and always helpful. My apartment is spacious, spotless and nicely decorated, and the grounds feel resort-like and beautifully maintained. Dining is excellent with varied menu choices, and there are plenty of amenities and activities (pool, tennis, library, fitness, bingo) to keep me engaged. It's a friendly, family-like community I'd happily recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Mathison Retirement Community is frequently described as a clean, attractive, and well-maintained campus with resort-like grounds and spacious living quarters. Reviewers consistently praise the facility’s physical environment — soothing color schemes, quiet bedrooms, large apartments with separate living areas, and a variety of special-use rooms (library, game room, workout room, pool, tennis court). Maintenance responsiveness is noted as a strength, and common areas and dining rooms are characterized as tidy and welcoming.

Care and staffing receive substantial positive commentary: many describe staff as caring, professional, and hardworking, with particular praise for kitchen staff and for staff who are attentive to resident needs. Families and residents commonly note a friendly atmosphere and prompt attention to repairs and daily living needs. However, there are isolated concerns about staff conduct and communication; prospective families should ask about staff training, supervision, and escalation pathways to understand consistency of care.

Dining is a clear strength in the narrative. Multiple reviewers describe flavorful meals, a broad menu selection, and formal dining settings with table service. The kitchen and dining teams are frequently highlighted as hardworking and capable, and the overall food quality is described as at least adequate to very good.

The community offers a wide range of amenities and activities — bingo, group workouts, bunco, volunteering opportunities, and multiple recreational rooms and equipment (including a big-screen TV/Wii). Despite this breadth, a recurring pattern is uneven resident participation: some families observe residents spending long periods in their rooms and feeling insufficiently encouraged to join activities. Several comments also point to amenities that are underused or not accessible in practice, creating a perceived mismatch between what is advertised and what an individual resident may actually use.

Security and safety are mixed themes. While some reviewers describe adequate security measures and a non-oppressive assisted-living environment, others express concerns about personal belongings and desire additional safeguards such as cameras or alarms. There is at least one serious allegation of theft of personal items; this suggests prospective residents should inquire directly about the facility’s property-protection policies, incident reporting procedures, and surveillance or alarm options. Additionally, a transition to higher-level care after a fall was noted by one family, indicating the importance of reviewing the community’s fall-prevention protocols, transfer procedures, and how care needs are monitored over time.

In sum, Mathison presents as a well-kept, amenity-rich community with many strengths in staffing, dining, and physical environment. The principal areas for scrutiny are the consistency of activity engagement and social inclusion, clarity and enforcement of property-security measures, transparency about amenity access and fees, and consistent professional conduct across staff. When evaluating Mathison, prospective residents and families should tour multiple times, observe meal and activity periods, ask specific questions about security and fall-prevention practices, and request written policies on amenity access and incident handling to ensure the community’s offerings align with the resident’s needs and expectations.

    About Mathison Retirement Community

Mathison Retirement Community sits in a friendly neighborhood with well-kept grounds and plenty of places to walk or relax outside, and when you go inside it feels lively, with friendly staff who seem to know everybody's name and residents who gather for things like arts and crafts, game nights, fitness classes, and movie nights, and when holidays come around they hold special events and community picnics that bring folks together in a cheerful way. The apartments are spacious, with choices ranging from large studios with kitchenettes to one and two-bedroom units with full kitchens, each one having modern safety features like smoke detectors and sprinkler systems, while communal dining offers a pleasant place to share good meals, which are made fresh every day and provide a variety of choices for different diets. For those who want independent living, the support is there when needed and includes things like transportation to doctor appointments, regular housekeeping, maintenance, and help with laundry, while others can access assisted living services if things get a little more difficult, which includes help with daily activities, medication, and regular nurse support-folks always say that the staff is patient and never makes anyone feel rushed. There's also a dedicated Memory Lane area for those with memory loss, with staff who really know how to offer gentle support and activities to keep the mind active in a safe, secure part of the community, and you see that the place aims to treat everyone with kindness and respect, whether it's helping with meals, exercise, or simply having someone to talk to. The grounds feature things you don't always find elsewhere, like a swimming pool, tennis courts, tranquil gardens, and a big courtyard where people gather to chat, plus a library, beauty salon, chapel, and even a barber shop, so you can take care of yourself without ever leaving home. Religious services are offered on-site for those who want them, and there's a strong focus on meeting social, spiritual, and physical needs. State licensing and a full 24-hour call system mean safety comes first, while personal care plans and regular health screenings, vision and hearing tests, and services for diabetic and incontinence care add reassurance for residents and their families. With a capacity for 100 residents, Mathison provides a range of choices from independent to assisted living and memory care, as well as home care, so people can pick what suits them as needs change over the years, and the atmosphere is always kind, comfortable, and meant to help people feel at home in their "Golden Years." The facility opened in 2000 and has kept up with changes to stay comfortable and safe, and overall, Mathison offers a straightforward, caring place for seniors who want both independence and a little help when they need it.
