    Beautiful, active community with caveats

I toured this large, hotel-like community and was impressed by the beautiful grounds, waterfalls and ocean views, well-appointed apartments, plentiful activities, and generally friendly, helpful staff. The dining felt upscale-chef-prepared meals and lots of choices-though I saw reports of uneven quality over time. Biggest cautions: it's expensive, nursing/memory-care options and staff responsiveness can be inconsistent, maintenance and elevators have occasional problems, and billing/communication sometimes need follow-up. Overall it's a lovely, active place that I'd recommend if you can afford it and don't require high-level medical care.

About The Ivy at Hawaii Kai

The Ivy at Hawaii Kai serves seniors age 62 and up with independent living, assisted living, and memory care options, offering a three-story residence with views of the Pacific Ocean, the Koolau mountains, and plenty of lush landscaping, which means you'll often find people enjoying walks outside under the palm trees or sitting at one of the patios with tables and chairs placed right outside their apartments, and if you like pets, the community does allow them in the apartments, where choices include studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom layouts so residents have some flexibility depending on what they like. Care teams and personal care assistants stay on site, offering support with daily needs, meals, and medical care, while working hard to provide help quietly, so people still feel as independent as their health allows, and they've got good on-site safety like handicap accessible features and a sprinkler system for peace of mind. The staff also supports memory care for seniors dealing with Alzheimer's or dementia, creating routines in a secure part of the building. People living here get nutritious chef-prepared meals in a round-table dining room with big windows and blue columns, there's also a koi pond in the lobby, and a handy atrium with green plants and water features, plus a bright reflection room with wooden pews for quiet moments, and of course, a game room where people gather for a round of billiards on the full-size pool table. For those who like to keep moving, there's a fitness center with treadmills, ellipticals, and weight machines, an accessible swimming pool with a covered patio nearby, and a calming spa space, while others might gather in the well-stocked library, spacious lounges, or attend arts and crafts sessions, educational programs, or health and wellness classes. The Ivy offers scheduled transportation services for appointments or outings, and if you ever need extra help with housekeeping, laundry, or maintenance, those services are available too. Residents enjoy social activities in the evenings, and the atmosphere focuses on comfort, respect, and building friendships both among residents and with the friendly staff, with a community spirit that emphasizes family and good neighborliness. The community also keeps people safe with 24-hour support and security features, while encouraging people to continue old hobbies or start new ones, with the goal of making every day comfortable and pleasant for seniors, whether they need just a little help or more regular care, and with its location near Straub Medical Center and Adventist Health Castle, necessary care is within easy reach.
