    Warm care with occasional lapses

I'm overall very pleased - the staff are warm, professional, and truly resident-focused; therapy, nursing, housekeeping and social services went above and beyond, the place feels clean and home-like, the food/activities are good, and families are well supported. That said, I've noticed an aging facility and occasional staffing shortages and rare lapses in care/communication, so stay involved even though I still recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for River's Edge Rehabilitation & Living Center are mixed but lean toward a generally positive reputation with notable, serious outlier complaints. A strong majority of reviewers praise the staff, therapy services, cleanliness, and the welcoming, home-like atmosphere. Many families and residents highlight excellent rehabilitation outcomes, compassionate individualized care, and staff members who consistently go above and beyond. However, multiple reviews describe alarming lapses in basic care and safety — including missed medications, unsanitary conditions, lack of assistance with eating/bathing/toileting, unreported falls, and bed sores — that must be taken seriously. The result is a facility that appears to offer high-quality care in many cases but with inconsistent experiences that can range from exemplary to unacceptable.

Care quality and safety: A dominant theme is strong skilled nursing and therapy care: physical and occupational therapy are repeatedly commended for helping residents regain independence after surgery. Individual therapists and aides are mentioned by name for exceptional work. At the same time, several reviews recount neglectful episodes — missed medications, incorrect meds, residents left to fall or not assisted after a fall, dirty feeding-tube dressings, bed sores, and residents left in wet diapers. These safety and hygiene concerns are significant and suggest variability in standards or staffing that leads to occasional dangerous lapses. Families reporting neglect were emphatic in their regret and advised others to avoid the facility; these serious claims contrast sharply with other families’ reports of top-notch skilled nursing.

Staff, culture, and consistency: Staff are the facility’s strongest asset in most reviews. Numerous comments describe compassionate, attentive, and patient-centered caregivers who make residents feel at home; CNAs and nurses are frequently praised for kindness, small comforts, and availability. Several employees are singled out positively (Laurel in social services, physical therapist Stan, Chalie, Nicole), and reviewers describe a culture where staff “enjoy their jobs.” Reviewers also note management accessibility (DON accommodating) and that new ownership has led to improvements in responsiveness and service. However, several reviews also report staff shortages, periods when no one is available to assist, and inconsistent responsiveness depending on shift or day. This variability points to staffing stability and training as areas that influence the resident experience dramatically.

Facilities, cleanliness, and environment: Many reviewers praise the facility’s cleanliness, housekeeping, pleasant decor, and well-kept grounds with multiple patios. The building is often described as warm, welcoming, and home-like. Conversely, some reviewers report unsanitary conditions — debris around beds, a urine smell in halls, and isolated reports of dirty dressing changes — and note the physical plant is aging and could use a facelift. Specific environmental complaints include freezing cold rooms or areas, small bedrooms with no chairs, tiny bathrooms with shared arrangements, and small beds lacking side rails. Overall, while common areas and grounds are frequently praised, some resident rooms and bathrooms may be cramped or in need of renovation.

Dining, activities, and quality of life: Food and activities are generally positive themes. Multiple reviewers say the meals smell and taste good, residents enjoy the food, and there is a steady schedule of activities that contribute to resident happiness and recovery. Worship options were noted as limited by at least one reviewer, but recreational programming and attentive activity staff are described as contributing to a positive atmosphere and recovery process.

Management, communication, and social services: Communication experiences are mixed. Several reviewers commend social services and discharge coordination — Laurel is highlighted as going the extra mile to secure resources and ensure smooth transitions. Some families report helpful guidance around insurance and securing VA coverage when mainstream insurers denied claims. Conversely, other families describe poor communication, an unresponsive front desk, and being left uninformed about falls or changes in condition. New ownership appears to have improved responsiveness and service for some reviewers, indicating management changes can and have impacted quality of care.

Patterns and recommendations: The reviews suggest two consistent patterns: (1) where staffing, supervision, and processes are robust, residents receive exceptional, compassionate care and effective rehabilitation; (2) where staffing is thin or systems fail, severe lapses in basic care and safety occur. Prospective residents and families should ask specific questions about staffing levels, recent staffing turnover, fall reporting protocols, medication administration checks, hygiene and infection-control procedures, and room configurations (bathroom arrangements, temperature control, bed rails). They should also request references or speak to current families when possible, and verify whether the facility’s reported improvements since new ownership are sustained. Management would benefit from addressing the highlighted safety issues (medication errors, fall response, hygiene) and communicating transparently about corrective actions to reduce the clear variability in resident experiences.

Bottom line: River's Edge appears capable of delivering high-quality, compassionate rehabilitation and long-term care, supported by many dedicated staff members and strong therapy services. However, serious and recurring negative reports about neglect, clinical errors, hygiene, and inconsistent care make it essential for families to conduct thorough due diligence, ask targeted questions, and monitor care closely if choosing this facility. The mix of highly positive testimonials and alarming negative incidents indicates an institution with considerable strengths that must resolve critical safety and consistency issues to achieve uniformly reliable care.
