    Mom happy, well cared, recommended

I'm so grateful my mom is happy and well cared for here - the caregivers are kind, attentive, and genuinely engaged, and her mood and health have improved. The home-like, cozy building (with good company, activities, spiritual support and caring staff who keep us updated) truly feels like a loving home away from home; I'd highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment: The reviews convey a strongly positive overall impression of Shepherd Premier Senior Living (Harvard). The dominant themes are compassionate, attentive staff and a warm, home-like environment that many families describe as a ‘‘home away from home.’’ Reviewers repeatedly emphasize kindness, genuine interest in residents, and a family-style atmosphere that is non-institutional and comforting. Multiple reviewers say their family members are happy, well cared for, and enjoy companionship and social engagement. Several state they would recommend the community and view it as good value for money.

Care quality and staff: Care quality is consistently praised. Caregivers are described as engaging, attentive, and loving; nurses are characterized as very nice and communicative, with families reporting that staff keep them updated. Reviewers note positive clinical and personal outcomes for residents (improvement, good day-to-day care), and many comment on the emotional and spiritual support provided by staff who are described as god-loving and humble in leadership. The staff-driven culture appears to be a standout strength, with many examples of staff going out of their way to ensure comfort and provide individualized attention.

Facilities and environment: The physical facility is frequently described as beautiful, comfortable, clean, and well-kept. Reviewers stress that the setting feels like a large family home rather than an institutional facility, with residents allowed to bring personal bedroom furniture and enjoy shared, home-style spaces. Holiday celebrations and a joyful environment are recurring positive notes, contributing to a sense of warmth and community. The admissions and move-in process is generally described as pleasant and efficient.

Activities and social life: Social programming and activities receive positive mention: caregivers engage residents, many participate, and staff create an environment of smiles, fun, and companionship. These activities, along with the home-like environment and holiday events, support social well-being and emotional comfort for residents.

Dining: Dining impressions are mixed. Several reviewers praise the presence of a chef and a generally positive dining atmosphere, while at least one clear concern notes that the food can be ‘‘hit or miss.’’ This suggests that while dining has strengths, consistency and menu/preferences may be areas to monitor or improve.

Management and operations: Leadership is described as humble and caring, but multiple reviewers mention the need for more management or administrative staff. Operational issues are not dominant but do appear: the most specific recurring concern is problems with medications or medication orders, which is a substantive clinical operational matter raised by reviewers. Another operational note is that the community uses its own doctor — this may be neutral or a limitation for some families who prefer outside physicians. There is also mention of COVID-era operational choices: the community took new residents during COVID and did not force residents to remain in rooms, which some families viewed positively; however, at least one comment notes vaccine status as pending, which some families may consider a concern.

Patterns and recommendations: The reviews portray Shepherd Premier Senior Living as a warm, family-focused community with strong staffing at the caregiver level and a welcoming, non-institutional facility that supports social, emotional, and spiritual needs. The most frequently mentioned strengths are compassionate staff, cleanliness, a cozy environment, active engagement of residents, and overall satisfaction/value. The key operational areas for improvement to watch are medication/order handling, consistency of dining, and bolstering management/administrative staffing. Families deciding on this community should weigh the clear strengths in personal care and environment against those operational concerns; many reviewers explicitly recommend the community and report high satisfaction for their loved ones.

    About Shepherd Premier Senior Living

Shepherd Premier Senior Living runs small, home-like assisted living and memory care places for people aged 55 and over, with a focus on dignity and respect, and they've been family owned and operated since 2014, with locations in Illinois and Wisconsin, including homes in Crystal Lake, Harvard, Oregon, Dixon, Sterling, Cherry Valley, and a few others, set up in converted Victorian houses that look and feel more like real homes than big facilities ever do. Each house has 16 beds, mostly private rooms but with a few shared, along with semi-private and single room options, and the apartments have things like their own washer and dryer, full kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, all wheelchair friendly and decorated however the resident likes, which makes settling in a bit easier. Some pets can come too, even though there aren't pets already living there, and people who use walkers and wheelchairs get around all right since the place is fully handicap accessible.

The staff offers care around the clock, with industry-leading caretaker-to-resident ratios, which makes it easier to handle things like medication reminders, help with bathing and dressing, memory care, diabetic and incontinence care, and help for people who can't walk or stand. They handle higher medical needs, too, for those who need it, and every place is kept secure with state-of-the-art keypad locks, security cameras in common areas and outdoors, and full sprinkler systems, with 7,300 square feet to spread out on and ADA bathrooms so nobody's left behind. Meals are home-style and made by a professional chef, with three hot meals and snacks every day, plus guest meals and even room service if someone's not up to coming out to eat with others. There are two family-style dining rooms, and people can pick if they want to dine in their rooms or with the group.

Shepherd Premier offers a full activity program with art classes, reading rooms, live entertainment, field trips, and outings around the rural areas, and there's always something going on, whether it's devotional services onsite or gardening in the landscaping, or just sitting in the yard for some peace. The facilities have strong Wi-Fi, basic cable TV in rooms, and public spaces for folks to visit together or read quietly, and there's a beautician onsite for hair or grooming needs. Owners help arrange appointments and transportation to outside doctors, and provide laundry, cleaning, and medication management, so daily hassles are a bit less. Memory care is specialized, with careful support for residents with dementia and Alzheimer's, secure rooms to keep people safe, and programs meant to help stimulate the mind, reduce confusion, and prevent wandering.

Each house has a warm, rustic feel, since they've renovated old Victorian homes out on rural properties, sitting on about a quarter-acre, and the whole approach is meant to make people feel safe and comfortable without the big, institutional feeling some places have, letting seniors keep some independence while still offering full-time help where it's needed. The cost is above $4,000 per month and the homes are licensed by the state, with waitlists for those interested. The staff has won awards, and the focus is always on honoring and supporting seniors while respecting their choices and preferences about how they want their later years to go.
