    Caring staff, pricey, food problems

I placed my loved one at Ashwood Place and overall I'm very pleased - staff are exceptionally friendly, caring, and proactive, the building is clean, home-like and safe, activities are engaging, and it's conveniently close to doctors and the hospital. The community was great for short-term or independent living and really improved social life and independence. Major drawbacks were inconsistent, mediocre meals (nutritionally poor, too close together) and limited transportation and salon hours. Management sometimes seemed more focused on marketing than resident programming, and costs are high (I noted an undisclosed 11% rent increase in 2024). Staff repeatedly went above and beyond, so I'd recommend Ashwood Place if you prioritize care and location - but factor in food quality, limited services, and price (in-home care may suit higher medical needs).

    • Pricey/expensive for some families; reported undisclosed rent increases (example cited: 11% in 2024)
    • Concerns about adequacy of care for progressively memory-impaired residents (may require outside sitter or additional in-home care)
    • Management sometimes perceived as prioritizing marketing/events over resident-centered activity planning
    • Service continuity issues at times (e.g., food quality dipped when cook left)
    • Some reports of light/limited housekeeping rather than full-service

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Ashwood Place are strongly positive on staffing, community life, cleanliness, and location, with recurring praise that the staff are friendly, caring, responsive, and frequently go "above and beyond." A large number of reviewers emphasize that staff members make residents feel special and supported, that move-ins and transitions are handled smoothly, and that named employees (examples in reviews) are responsive and helpful. Many families reported a measurable improvement in socialization, mobility, and independence for their loved ones after moving in. The facility is described repeatedly as bright, home-like, and well-kept with clear pride in maintenance and cleanliness.

Care quality and staff: The dominant theme is that the staff provide attentive and compassionate care appropriate for independent living and light assistance. Reviewers consistently highlight helpful directors and staff who respond quickly to needs and questions and who create a welcoming atmosphere. This responsiveness extends to emergency situations as well—one review noted a fall requiring EMS but praised staff reaction and handling. However, there are cautionary notes: while the community accepts memory-impaired residents, several reviewers advised that Ashwood Place may not be sufficient for progressively higher-acuity dementia (specific mention of Lewy body dementia). For those situations families were advised to arrange supplementary in-home care or an outside sitter. Safety concerns for certain dementia behaviors (e.g., dependence on a safety necklace) were raised, suggesting that residents with complex memory-care needs should be evaluated carefully before placement.

Facilities and housing: Reviewers regularly commend apartment quality—spacious one-bedroom units, studios, patios/balconies, and cottages outside the main building were mentioned as attractive options. The building and grounds are repeatedly described as clean, immaculate, and well-maintained, with pleasant dining and family entertaining areas. Amenities such as a library, therapy/exercise equipment, and an on-site security guard contribute to resident wellbeing. Weekly housekeeping, fresh sheets and towels, and the ability to personalize apartments were positive specifics cited frequently.

Dining and nutrition: Dining impressions are mixed and represent one of the clearest areas of unevenness across reviews. Many residents and family members praise the meals, call out a very good chef, and say the dining experience improved health and social interaction. Conversely, other reviewers report mediocre meals with limited nutritional quality—high in carbohydrates and sugars, low in taste and nutritional value—and suggest the menu lacks variety and healthier options. A few reviewers described a decline in food quality corresponding with staff turnover in the kitchen (e.g., after losing a cook), while others noted improvements afterward. Additional comments include timing of meals being too close together for some individuals and sticky dining room floors as a minor cleanliness complaint related to dining areas.

Activities and social life: One of Ashwood Place's strongest features is its active programming. Reviews describe a robust calendar that includes bingo, Bible study, music and dancing, happy hour, walking groups, yoga, and social events that motivate residents to be mobile and engaged. Socialization is repeatedly called out as a major benefit—residents make friends, reduce loneliness, and gain a sense of belonging. Staff-led activities and community events are credited with improving residents' mood, mobility, and willingness to participate in communal dining and exercise.

Operations, transportation, and other services: Some operational limitations were noted. Transportation is available but limited in frequency and hours (for example, respondents referenced a 3-day-per-week service with narrow morning windows such as 9am–11am). The on-site salon has limited hours, and housekeeping was described by some as light rather than comprehensive. Management receives praise for staff engagement and helpfulness, yet a subset of reviewers felt management focused heavily on marketing events rather than resident-tailored activities. Financial transparency also surfaced as a concern: a reported 2024 rent increase of 11% that was not clearly disclosed led to dissatisfaction among some family members, and multiple reviewers described the community as pricey or potentially out of range for some budgets.

Safety and suitability guidance: For many independent-living seniors and families seeking proximity to medical care, an active social environment, and attentive staff, Ashwood Place appears to be an excellent fit—especially for those who are fairly independent or need light assistance. For residents with evolving or complex memory-care needs, the reviews suggest caution: additional in-home care or sitter arrangements may be required, and families should confirm safeguards and staff training specific to conditions such as Lewy body dementia. The presence of a security guard and quick staff responses to incidents are positives, but they do not replace specialized memory-care services when needed.

Bottom-line impression: Ashwood Place is consistently endorsed for its warm staff, strong sense of community, clean and attractive facilities, and convenient medical-adjacent location. The most significant drawbacks raised by multiple reviewers are inconsistent dining/nutrition, limited transportation and salon hours, potential cost and rent-increase concerns, and limits in capability for high-acuity memory care. Prospective residents and families should weigh the community’s strengths—especially social programming, staff responsiveness, and location—against these operational and care-level limitations. For independent seniors who value social engagement and proximity to doctors, Ashwood Place is frequently recommended; for those with progressing dementia or high medical needs, families should plan supplementary care and carefully confirm whether the level of clinical support available will meet future needs.
