    Inconsistent care, theft and neglect

I experienced a mix: some caring, welcoming staff and a pleasant retirement-community vibe - my nephew loved it and parts of the medical/assisted-living care were good. But I also witnessed neglect from arrival, unanswered calls, filthy/dingy conditions, ripped tiles, staff smoking on breaks, falls, dehydration/malnutrition, and theft of belongings (wallet, glasses, dentures) that led me to contact police and Adult Protective Services. Because care is inconsistent and safety is a real concern, I would not recommend it for Alzheimer's or other vulnerable residents.

    About Laurel's Inc

Laurel's Inc sits over on 169 County Pike in Harlan, Kentucky, where it's got housing for up to 82 residents and provides several levels of senior care, so folks can find independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and board and care all in one campus, and there's also companion care at home for anyone who needs just a bit of help with things like cleaning, meal delivery, or rides, and they've got in-home health care for when medical needs pop up at home, which can be useful for families wanting to keep folks in familiar surroundings. Residents who've got Alzheimer's or dementia get specialized support, with secure environments, memory-enhancing programs, and person-centered activities every day of the week, so folks can stay busy and connected even when memory changes come along, and all memory care areas have supervision and support around the clock. In skilled nursing, there's round-the-clock medical care and help with things like rehabilitation, wound care, and nursing tasks, and for those who don't need that level of care, independent living means private or companion apartments, kitchens or kitchenettes for fixing snacks, and a whole bunch of meals prepared for special diets or allergies by a professional chef, served in a dining room, so there's no worry about cooking if you don't want to. Assisted living and board and care services include help with bathing, dressing, moving about, medication management, and even diabetic care, including 24-hour call systems and supervision whenever someone needs an extra watchful eye, and some rooms are furnished and set up with private bathrooms, cable TV, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning so people can be comfortable no matter the weather. Laurel's Inc keeps a calendar full of activities, from movie nights and fitness programs, to devotional outings, planned day trips, gardening, and music, and folks can spend time in the library, game or fitness room, beauty salon, computer center, or wellness spa with a sauna if they just want to unwind, and there's plenty of outdoor walking paths and gardens for those who like fresh air. Community services take care of things like housekeeping, laundry, moving in, and transportation to appointments or group outings, which can be a big relief for families, and there's even a small library for folks who like to read. The campus sits near Appalachian Regional Healthcare and Mountain Heart Center, so medical help's nearby if something changes unexpectedly, and licensing by state and local agencies means safety rules have to be followed. Residents get help matching the care to what they need, whether it's just a bit of support, guidance for serious memory issues, or intensive nursing, and respite care's offered for those needing a short-term stay. Laurel's Inc doesn't take Medicare unless the facility's certified for it, and the place gets surveyed by groups like the Department of Aging or Veteran's Services to check on quality and rules. All in all, Laurel's Inc covers a wide range of services for seniors needing anything from independent living and socializing to around-the-clock care, with everything designed to make daily life easier and give peace of mind to families.
