    Excellent care, tasty meals, clean

I toured Highlands Square and moved my mom in - I'm very pleased. The staff are loving and attentive, care is excellent, meals are tasty with lots of choices, the grounds and rooms are clean and home-like, and residents stay busy with great activities and outings; I would happily recommend this community to other families.

    Summary of reviews

Highlands Square is presented across reviews as a small, community-oriented assisted living option with a consistently warm, family-like atmosphere. Many families and prospective residents described a welcoming admissions process and a front-desk team that provides clear answers and support. The size of the community is repeatedly cited as a strength: it appears to foster close resident–staff relationships, visible social interaction among residents, and a sense of belonging.

Care quality and staff performance are central strengths. Reviewers commonly characterize caregiving staff as compassionate, respectful, and attentive, and they highlight staff responsiveness to emergent needs. Specific operational roles receive praise (life-enrichment staff, business-office personnel, activities director), and several writers expressed relief and confidence that their loved ones are safe and supported. At the same time, there are mentions of inconsistent staff conduct or responsiveness in isolated cases; prospective families may wish to evaluate staffing levels and turnover during a tour.

Dining is generally described as a strong point: reviewers note balanced, varied menus, attractive presentation, and frequent positive comments about quality and desserts. However, there are isolated criticisms about portion sizes, limited evening offerings, and dining-room staffing at peak times. These mixed impressions suggest that while the overall dining program is robust, meal service continuity and portioning may vary by shift.

Activity programming receives repeatedly favorable comments. Highlands Square offers an active calendar with daily exercise, games (bingo, ring toss), singalongs, themed parties, and frequent offsite outings (movies, restaurants, shopping). The dedicated life-enrichment coordinator is frequently singled out for engaging residents and organizing events that contribute to social life and resident well-being.

Facility amenities and grounds are widely praised: the building is described as clean and modern, with well-kept gardens, sunrooms, screened porches, and accessible outdoor walking areas. Apartment layouts (studios and one-bedrooms) are noted as comfortable and reasonably spacious; on-site salon services and shuttle transportation add convenience. A minority of comments indicate variability in building upkeep, so a current, in-person inspection of the particular unit and common areas is advisable.

Management and operations receive mixed feedback. Many reviewers commend responsive, caring management and strong family communication, but some describe lapses in follow-up and communication, and there are isolated concerns about billing and financial transparency. There is at least one allegation of improper billing that led a family to relocate their relative; prospective families should review contracts, billing policies, and dispute-resolution procedures before committing.

Overall, Highlands Square is characterized as a caring, activity-rich, small assisted living community with strong dining and a supportive staff culture. The dominant patterns are positive, though prospective residents and families should verify current staffing levels, meal schedules and portions, maintenance status of specific units, and billing practices during a visit to ensure the community meets their expectations.

    About Highlands Square

Highlands Square Senior Living gives folks a place to age with support and safety, offering choices for independent living, assisted living, memory care, home care, and even nursing home services if needed, so people with different needs can usually find a suitable spot. The apartments feel modern and comfortable, with options like studio and one-bedroom units, and all have features like handicapped-equipped bathrooms and illuminated entryways to help make moving around safer. The dining area has chef-prepared meals and snacks available daily, and residents can eat in a restaurant-style dining room, which helps make mealtime easier and a bit more social if folks care for that.

People can join a schedule of life-enrichment activities, including wellness programs, social groups, and regular outings to restaurants, area attractions, and community events if they choose to stay busy. For care, staff offer help any hour of the day, handling things like bathing, dressing, cooking, medication management, housekeeping, and laundry, and the care team works out each person's support with residents and their families, so everyone gets the attention they need. The building itself includes sitting areas inside and out, with a patio and places to visit or relax, plus there's a beauty shop on-site for haircuts or other grooming needs, which many folks appreciate. Highlands Square is pet-friendly so people can bring their companions along.

Safety stays top of mind here, with an emergency response system in every apartment and 24/7 personalized care services, as well as in-house maintenance. Transportation services help residents reach appointments with doctors, dentists, therapists, or optometrists, and it's free to get to these professional services, which is one less thing for families to worry about. Folks with memory care needs get extra help, and there are steps to prevent confusion or wandering. The staff keeps the inside and outside areas clean and tidy, with regular housekeeping and laundry included. When someone needs help around the clock, whether that's with reminders or taking care of themselves, staff are available for that.

People who still feel active and healthy can pick independent living options with a social setting and little hassle, while those who want to stay at home but need a little help can use home care services for companionship and other non-medical support. Some folks like having the beauty shop for a haircut, or going to social gatherings and activities, or just knowing there's always someone nearby if needed. Highlands Square doesn't promise to fix everything, but it does cover most of what people need as they age-dignity, help, good food, friends, and a bit of fun when wanted.
