    Excellent staff, alarming leadership failures

I have mixed feelings. Communication, atmosphere and therapy improved a lot - many nurses, CNAs and admissions staff (Lauren) were caring, activities were engaging, and my mother got stronger and seemed happy. But serious leadership and safety problems remain: mishandled funds, slow/poor responses, retaliation to complaints, CNAs hiding on phones, residents left soaked in urine, unsanitary conditions and missing items - issues that need investigation. In short: excellent frontline staff and rehab, but unacceptable management and safety failures; I'm grateful for the care my mother received and want her home as soon as possible.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Summit Retirement Center is highly polarized, with a large contingent of reviewers expressing deep gratitude for individual caregivers and departments, while another group reports alarming instances of neglect and abuse. The facility receives repeated praise for specific staff members and departments, especially in therapy/rehab and memory care, where families describe meaningful progress, compassionate attention, and exceptional bedside manner. Several named caregivers and nurses are singled out as delivering heartfelt, above-and-beyond care, and multiple families state that their loved ones were happier, more engaged, or improving physically while at the facility.

Facility and environment impressions are mixed but frequently positive: many reviewers describe the building as clean, welcoming, gated, and secure, with convenient safety protocols and an improved check-in station. Private rooms with individual showers and adequate space are noted as advantages, and numerous comments praise the atmosphere, friendly admissions staff, and a general sense of safety. Activities and social programs also receive positive mention, as do some accounts of fresh, hot, and filling meals. Rehabilitation and therapy services are a recurring strength in the favorable reviews; families report good outcomes, attentive therapists, and satisfying therapy departments.

Contrasting sharply with the positive accounts are numerous, serious negative reports. Several reviews allege neglectful care: residents reportedly left in urine or feces, sleeping on plastic without sheets or pillows, and exposed to unsanitary conditions such as pest presence. There are multiple, severe allegations of physical and mental abuse, claims that residents were kept intoxicated by staff, and statements that medical complaints such as bladder or kidney infections were ignored. Some families describe unexplained bruises and swollen faces, delayed assistance, and a pattern of poor response from management, including no callbacks and apparent retaliation when concerns were raised.

Management and accountability emerge as central concerns in the negative reviews. Critics point to staff turnover and leadership changes, mishandling of resident funds, missing gifts, and slow or inadequate corrective action when problems are reported. Several reviewers call for investigations, with some urging regulatory or criminal scrutiny; words like "should be shut down," "0 stars," and calls for arrest appear in the most severe accounts. These reports suggest variability in performance that may depend on unit, shift, or which staff are on duty, creating a risky inconsistency for residents and families.

Dining and daily care quality appear inconsistent across reviews. While some families rave about hot, satisfying meals and attentive nursing and CNA care, others complain of cold or undercooked food and a paycheck-driven staff mentality. Staffing behavior also varies in reports: while many staff are described as friendly, polite, and helpful, other accounts describe CNAs hiding on phones, inattentiveness, and rude or abusive conduct. This variability extends to cleanliness and living conditions; some families found no odor and frequent check-ins, while others encountered filth and pest issues.

Patterns and notable themes: (1) Highly polarized experiences suggest strong variability by unit, shift, or individual staff—some teams and departments function very well while others fail to meet basic standards. (2) Therapy/rehab and memory care are frequently praised, indicating institutional strength in these clinical areas for many residents. (3) Management, accountability, and response to complaints are recurrent concerns, with multiple reports of mishandled funds, missing items, retaliation, and slow remediation. (4) Several reviews contain allegations serious enough to warrant external investigation; families reporting these issues describe systemic failures rather than isolated incidents.

In summary, Summit Retirement Center appears to offer substantial benefits for many residents—quality rehab services, compassionate staff members, secure facilities, and engaging activities are real strengths. However, the facility is also accused in multiple independent reviews of severe lapses in care, cleanliness, safety, and managerial oversight. Prospective residents and families should weigh these polarized reports carefully, visit multiple units at different times, ask for recent inspection reports and incident logs, verify staffing levels and turnover, seek references from current families, and get written policies on handling funds, complaints, and investigations before making a placement decision.
