    Hilltop views caring staff costly

I live here and love the setting - beautiful, hilltop/ocean views next to Acadia with well-kept grounds and cottages. The staff are loving, professional and attentive (nurses, CNAs, maintenance, kitchen and music therapy) and the community feels small, calm and homey with good activities and outings. Food and programming can be inconsistent (some meals delicious, some reheated), and ongoing staff shortages/high turnover hurt continuity of care. It's very well maintained and safe, but expensive and you're often charged or expected to provide basics - overall I'm glad I moved here, but staffing and costs are my biggest concerns.

    Summary review

Overall impression Birch Bay Retirement Village receives substantial praise for its physical setting, facility upkeep, and the warmth and compassion of its direct-care staff. Many reviewers call the campus beautiful and well-maintained, repeatedly citing spectacular views, gardens, and immediate adjacency to Acadia National Park as standout features. The community's grounds, maintenance crew, and housekeeping are commonly described as excellent, and several reviewers highlight rapid response to maintenance requests (for example, quick appliance replacement in cottages). For residents who prioritize location, outdoor access, and a resort-like atmosphere with strong custodial care, Birch Bay frequently ranks very highly.

Care quality and staff A dominant theme is gratitude for caring, attentive staff across roles — nursing, CNAs, aides, kitchen, cleaning, maintenance, and therapy staff. Many families emphasize that staff treat residents with dignity and build family-like relationships; several reviewers explicitly credit staff for exceptional support during COVID-19 and for smoothing transitions from independent to assisted and memory care. The community offers medical supports that reviewers value: weekly physician visits, geriatric collaboration, and a memory-care neighborhood (Safe Harbor) noted by many as a strong, safe option for dementia care. For a large portion of reviewers the clinical and personal care level is described as excellent.

However, a significant and recurring concern is staff turnover and insufficient staffing. Multiple reviewers report high turnover that causes discontinuity of care, requires relatives to re-educate new caregivers, and creates situations where staff do not review resident notes. These staffing pressures are associated with delays in service, occasional declines in quality, and variability in residents’ day-to-day experience. Where staffing is adequate, communication and care levels are described as high; where staffing is thin, families report slower responses, reheated meals in assisted living, and reduced activity offerings.

Dining and activities Dining receives mixed but generally positive comments: many residents praise the food, talented chefs, and the availability of three meals daily and meal delivery. At the same time, a number of reviews point to inconsistency — chef turnover, reheated meals (specifically noted in assisted living), leftover offerings, and occasional declines in taste or service. Activities are widely praised when led well: music therapy, live music, arts groups, a grand piano, movie nights, men's groups, and field trips are frequently called out as highlights. Community partnerships (Acadia Senior College, local clubs) and varied outdoor programming are major positives. Yet some reviewers — often those in smaller subcommunities or at times of staff shortages — report limited planned activities or an unfriendly/ineffective activities coordinator.

Facilities, living options, and unit design The property offers a mix of living arrangements, including cottages that many residents rate as excellent value and very satisfying for independent living. Cottages are specifically noted for utilities convenience and sometimes for no-charge covered items — although this varies and some families report being asked to supply basics (sheets, towels, diapers, soap, even furniture) in other housing types. Apartment design problems appear in several reviews: inaccessible shelves, storage challenges, and some very small bedrooms in certain floor plans. Overall, the physical plant and common areas are highly rated, but unit-level design and storage should be reviewed by prospective residents.

Management, costs, and communication Costs are a consistent area of concern: reviewers frequently describe Birch Bay as expensive and targeted to wealthier seniors, with explicit mention of high daily rates (one reviewer referenced $390/day). There are repeated comments about nickel-and-diming, mandatory provision of basic supplies by residents, and perceived executive-level penny-pinching. Billing transparency, service charges, and where costs are covered (especially differences between cottages and apartment living) are recurring questions.

Communication experiences are mixed: many families report strong, high-level communication from administrators and quick availability of staff, while others describe difficulty contacting the appropriate person and poor notice about upcoming events. Several reviewers praise the availability of administrators and the high level of communication, but the presence of other reports about being unable to reach the right staff or receiving little event communication suggests variability in administrative responsiveness that may correlate with staffing levels.

Patterns and recommendations for prospective residents Patterns across reviews point to a generally excellent physical environment, kind and dedicated frontline staff, strong memory-care offerings, and active, creative programming — especially in music and outdoor activities. The main risk factors to weigh are staffing stability, cost, and unit design. Prospective residents should (1) ask about current staffing ratios and turnover rates in the specific neighborhood of interest, (2) clarify exactly what items and services are included versus charged extra, (3) sample dining in the exact dining venue they would use, and (4) inspect unit storage and layout for accessibility. Also ask about continuity-of-care practices (chart review, handoff protocols) and how the community handles onboarding and training of new staff.

Bottom line For many families Birch Bay delivers a high-quality, compassionate, and scenic retirement experience backed by responsive maintenance, good clinical oversight, and strong programming — particularly in memory care, music, and outdoor engagement. At the same time, there are real and repeated concerns about staffing continuity, inconsistent dining in certain areas, mandatory fees or supplied-item policies, and unit design issues. The community appears best suited to older adults and families who value location, robust custodial support, and culture, and who can absorb premium pricing while doing due diligence around staffing and contractual inclusions.

    About Birch Bay Retirement Village

Birch Bay Retirement Village sits about twelve miles outside Ellsworth, Maine, and has been around since 2001, with 90 residents calling it home, and one thing folks will notice right away is the peaceful view of Frenchman Bay and the quiet setting with the sound of water from the nearby beach, and as a non-profit community sponsored and governed by Mount Desert Island Hospital, they keep reinvesting in improvements, which shows in the way the place feels well cared for and relaxed. Residents can choose from independent living apartments, supportive living suites in Pleasant Cove, and Safe Harbor Memory Care units, each one with its own character, and for those looking for more space, the custom-built cottages come in three sizes, all single-story with either one or two bedrooms, attached garages, full appliances, and sunrooms where you can sit and read, and folks with a green thumb can use the raised gardening beds outside. The main inn area offers many community spaces, like a library, salon, barber shop, dining rooms with cozy fireplaces, a cafe, and gathering spaces for meetings or activities, and they've got amenities like a fitness center, outside courtyards, walking paths, and plenty of common areas for sitting and visiting with neighbors. Chef-prepared meals are made from scratch and served in either a bright, casual dining room or a more formal one, and if special diets are needed, like low sodium or no sugar, they can accommodate that, and in the memory care neighborhood, there's a family-style dining area that feels welcoming. Activities fill the calendar, from book clubs and men's groups to yoga, water exercises at the YMCA, musical therapy with a board-certified music therapist, plus museum tours and events like the Lobster Roll Tour for a bit of fun, and they even host an annual Golf for Alzheimer's event. Residents can also join education programs at the Learning Institute, get support from caregiver groups, or take part in community outreach like the adult day program. Birch Bay Retirement Village offers housekeeping, transportation, room service, parking, and health and wellness checks, with emergency response and medical alert systems always in place for safety and peace of mind, and people have choices of studio apartments, private memory care suites, or larger cottage homes, all designed to make life easier and more comfortable, without the pressure of upkeep or worry about daily chores. For help with daily living, the staff is there around the clock, and the community can provide health care, hospice services, respite stays, and aging-in-place support, with ties to Mount Desert Island Hospital for more advanced care or emergencies, and for memory support, care plans are tailored for folks with Alzheimer's or cognitive impairment, with special programs to keep minds as sharp and engaged as possible. Visitors and family can find pet-friendly policies, transportation info, and even advice on local shopping and activities on Mount Desert Island, including dining spots and bakeries, and for those who like to keep active or try new things, there are opportunities for massage, family-friendly events, or even wedding venues right on site. Birch Bay Retirement Village feels homey and close-knit, with a strong focus on community, support, and making the later years enjoyable and safe, all while keeping things simple, and with an average rating of 8.7 out of 10, folks generally say it's a good place to be.
