    Caring staff, clean, vibrant community

I moved my mom to Huntington Common and overall we're very pleased. The staff are outstanding-caring, responsive and proactive-and the community is clean, bright, and activity-filled with spacious cottages and lovely memory-care outdoor areas. Food and dining are inconsistent: when good the meals are varied and tasty, but too often they're bland, cold, or slow; staffing hiccups and occasional suspended amenities were frustrating. It's expensive but worth the peace of mind for the care and communication; I'd recommend it while checking current dining and transport availability.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews of Sunrise of Huntington Common is strongly positive, with the dominant themes being high-quality, compassionate care and a welcoming, well-maintained community. Numerous reviewers praised the staff consistently — nurses, administrators, dining and cleaning teams, therapists, and named staff members were described as attentive, kind, and proactive. Several reports highlight exceptional hospice and end-of-life coordination, including loving care for residents and ongoing support for families. Families commonly felt relief and peace of mind knowing their loved ones were monitored closely (including medication oversight) and that staff communicated frequently with progress updates. The facility’s proactive pandemic response and reports of no COVID-19 cases at times further reassured many families.

Facilities and housing options receive frequent praise. Reviewers like the variety of living choices (traditional apartments, cottages with garages, and memory care), ample natural light, roomy layouts in cottages, and well-kept grounds suitable for walking. The community is described as clean with no strange odors; housekeeping is noted as reliable. The campus is pet-friendly and secure, with an outdoor memory-care area that families appreciated. Many reviewers emphasized a warm, family-like atmosphere where staff know residents by name and foster engagement.

Activities and lifestyle offerings are another consistent strength. The community hosts a wide array of programs — arts and crafts, painting, embroidery, music, plant care, and frequent events and projects — and many family members value this activity-rich environment. Some reviewers said activities are well geared toward involvement and that the community provides an active social life. In addition, practical services such as laundry, hair care, transportation, and short-term/month-to-month stays (helpful for transition periods) were viewed positively by multiple families. The onboarding process, including virtual tours, was described as flexible and informative by several reviewers.

Dining and food quality are more mixed and represent a recurring area of concern. While many reviewers complimented the dining experience — multiple meal options, soup/salad/three entree choices, dessert options, and overall good restaurant-style service — a substantial number of reviews reported inconsistent meal quality. Complaints include bland or poorly flavored food, meals served cold, and occasional halting of dining services during staffing shortages. These inconsistencies have led to frustration among some residents and families and are cited as an area needing attention.

Staffing and operational issues appear in a minority but important set of reviews. Several reviewers mentioned staffing shortages causing slow service, temporary suspension of dining, or reduced availability of certain amenities while monthly fees continued to be charged. Transportation also surfaced as a specific logistical problem for some — for example, an advertised church shuttle that proved too small and often full. Some reviewers also described parts of the facility and common-area furniture as dated and noted narrow hallways that can be hard to navigate. A few families felt the rental model or the lack of buy-in caused hesitation, and one review noted the community may not offer long-term care options suitable for every situation.

In sum, Sunrise of Huntington Common is repeatedly characterized as a caring, clean, and activity-rich senior community with strong clinical and hospice coordination, many housing options, and a warm culture. The facility earns high marks for staff quality, communication, and resident engagement. The most significant and recurring caveats involve cost (many find it expensive), intermittent staffing-related service shortfalls (primarily affecting dining and some amenities), and occasional limitations in transportation and building updates. Families considering Huntington Common should weigh the strong caregiving and community environment against these operational and dining considerations and, if possible, ask about recent staffing stability, dining practices, transportation capacity, and any capital improvements planned for common areas and hallways.

    About Sunrise of Huntington Common

Sunrise of Huntington Common sits on a quiet 37-acre property along the Kennebunk River in Kennebunk, Maine, and you can find independent living apartments, assisted living studios, memory care studios, and independent river cottages throughout the grounds. The community handles several types of care: independent living, assisted living, memory care-including secured programs for those with Alzheimer's and dementia-skilled nursing, hospice, and home care, so residents get the help they need as they age, without having to move. The staff are there 24 hours a day and include nurses and visiting healthcare professionals, and the team helps with everything from daily wellness checks to medication, diabetic care, and even major behavior support. There are emergency call systems in every unit, plus they use the Sunrise CareConnect electronic health record so it's easy to track care and changes.

The grounds are full of places for people to spend time indoors and out, like a big library with a wood fireplace, a parlor with another fireplace, a billiards room, a club room, a piano room, a bistro, courtyards, walking paths, gardens, a gazebo, and even a fitness center for exercise or social events. There's a chapel for devotional services, a private dining room, and common lounges for sitting together. You'll find a club room, a beauty and barber shop, computers and internet, and five laundry rooms scattered throughout for simple chores.

Meals come three times a day plus snacks-vegetarian options included-and staff can help residents with eating if they need it. Houses are designed so you can choose between studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units, or even river cottages, and units can have kitchenettes, private baths, emergency call systems, and sometimes walk-in closets and furnished options. Pets are welcome to stay with residents.

For folks who need it, staff help with bathing, dressing, medication management, incontinence care, and mechanical lifts for transfers, and they offer care for folks who may wander, act out, or have changing needs, so everyone can stay safe and comfortable. The memory care area is secured, and there's a focus on reducing confusion and supporting independence as much as possible. Activities are planned every day, aiming to keep everyone moving, social, and engaged, and there are special memory care programs called Reminiscence Program and Terrace Club.

Residents get extras like transportation-sometimes complimentary, sometimes at cost-personalized reserved parking with snow removal, weekly housekeeping, daily trash pickup, and help from property managers. There's high-speed internet and Wi-Fi so people can connect with family, and Sunrise helps with telehealth visits so residents don't have to leave for every doctor's appointment. Outdoor smoking is allowed in certain areas. The community holds a large number of national quality awards and says the team's mission is to champion quality of life for every senior. There are resources for moving and support for families and caregivers too. Folks pay with private funds, insurance, Social Security, or veterans' benefits, and there are no community or respite fees-just different rates depending on care level or extra people living in one room.

Sunrise of Huntington Common blends independence with care, offering many options, grounds to enjoy, and a support system to help older adults stay comfortable, relaxed, and safe as their needs change.
