    Excellent caring staff and facilities

I placed my grandmother here and have been very impressed: the nursing staff are friendly, easy to find, and genuinely confident-daily updates and personal interaction gave me real emotional relief. She regained most of her functions thanks to excellent physical care that far surpassed what we managed at home. The facility is clean, tidy, and welcoming-well-maintained rooms and bathrooms, lots to do (parakeets in the activity room, hairdressing, multiple dining rooms with nice menus) and happy residents. It's an older, smaller building with limited private rooms and could use upgrades, but I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Montello Commons is strongly positive, with reviewers repeatedly praising the quality of care and the staff. Staff-related themes are the most prominent: reviewers describe the team as exemplary, genuinely enthusiastic, confident, and personally engaged with residents. Families appreciated frequent communication and daily updates, which provided emotional relief and confidence that loved ones were well cared for. Several statements explicitly recommend the facility and say the care is better than what residents received at home. Nursing care is described as excellent and easy to access; residents and family members noted friendly, easy-to-find nursing staff and that staff support translated into measurable improvements (for example, a grandmother who regained most functions while at the community). These points indicate consistent, attentive clinical and personal care practices that reassure families and contribute to positive outcomes for residents.

Facility upkeep and atmosphere also receive strong marks. Multiple reviewers described Montello Commons as clean, tidy, and well-maintained, with presentable bathrooms and guest rooms. The community is described as welcoming and harmonious, with happy residents and good roommate matches noted. Activity options and on-site amenities add to resident quality of life: reviewers mentioned lots of activities, parakeets in the activity room, and hairdressing services, which suggest a lively programming schedule and attention to social and grooming needs. Dining gets positive comments as well — multiple dining rooms and appealing menus were specifically cited, which supports the sense that daily life and social dining are strengths of the community.

Despite the many positives, there are consistent facility-related drawbacks to consider. Several reviewers pointed out that Montello Commons is an older, smaller building and that it needs upgrading; limited availability of private rooms was called out as a constraint. One reviewer specifically noted a noticeable "smell of old people," which suggests occasional odor control or ventilation issues in parts of the facility. The presence of a separate wing for nursing care was mentioned; while some may view this as appropriate specialization, others may see it as a separation that can complicate transitions or indicate differing levels of upkeep across wings. These issues do not appear to dominate the sentiment, but they are recurring enough to be relevant for prospective residents and families weighing physical environment and room preferences.

In summary, reviews portray Montello Commons as a community with strong, compassionate staff; reliable communication; high-quality, accessible nursing and physical care; and a well-maintained, welcoming environment with good activities and dining. The most significant negatives relate to the physical plant — an older, smaller facility with limited private rooms and some reported need for upgrades, plus occasional odor concerns. For families prioritizing personal attention, clinical competence, and active programming, Montello Commons appears to be a highly recommended option. For those who put a higher priority on modern facilities or guaranteed private rooms, these infrastructure limitations are important to investigate further during a visit.

Montello Commons sits on College Street in Lewiston, Maine, and offers a 44-bed assisted living and skilled nursing community that's been here for over 50 years, so you'll find a lot of experience among the staff, who are known for being friendly and attentive, and they're around 24 hours a day, with both a nurse on staff at all times and support available for short-term or long-term needs, whether you're coming right from the hospital or looking for safe, steady care for daily living. This place covers a range of needs, from independent living amenities to memory care, with help for those who need medication management, bathing, dressing, or getting around; people who have limited mobility can get non-ambulatory care, and there are 24-hour call systems for safety, with English language services and care offered in other languages as needed. You've got choices about how you want to live here-private or semi-private rooms in either a studio, one-bedroom, or even a two-bedroom apartment-and if you like a cozy, medium-sized place, Montello Commons gives you that; it's two stories, has multiple dining rooms with always-available meals cooked to suit special diets if you need, and even has room for your pet if that's important. For activities, there's a calendar with both community-run and resident-led events, rooms for arts and movies, a library, walking paths, a garden, a barber and salon, and space for fitness and fun, plus regular trips for shopping or outings, as well as scheduled transportation, so you can keep social or take things easy at your own pace. The team aims at serving seniors with assisted living, skilled nursing following surgery or illness, and memory care too, and there's a business office run by Ashley Buiniskas and both admissions and resident care overseen by Brittany Spugnardi, RN, which helps families with finding the right service level or just answering questions without any fuss. Montello Commons is a Medicaid and Medicare provider, and the nursing home part carries a 4-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, while the wider community scores 8.8 out of 10, and you'll notice the place is clean and pretty welcoming, especially being close to local hospitals, shops, and parks like Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary, which is handy for visits or just a nice view. Housekeeping, laundry, safety alert systems, and move-in help are all offered, and staff keep things running smoothly with transportation and daily cleaning, so residents can focus on keeping active, joining in community life, or just relaxing, as each person prefers. People appreciate the warm and inviting atmosphere-you might hear about movie nights, community shelters, or a devoted staff that's been around a long time-and with tours available, prospective residents can walk through, meet people, and figure out if Montello Commons feels like the right fit for themselves or loved ones.
