    About Narraguagus Bay Health Care

Narraguagus Bay Health Care sits in Milbridge, Maine and has provided care for seniors since the early 1970s, with Dr. Steven Weisberger owning and managing the facility since the early 1990s, and it's been a place that helps seniors with different needs, offering long-term nursing care, assisted living, independent living, memory care, and dementia care, and while it's been licensed as a Residential Care Facility - Level IV with 23 licensed beds, the property itself includes 28 residential rooms and up to 58 beds in a two-story building served by a large elevator, all set up with rooms that have en suite half bathrooms, HVAC air handlers added in 2022, a rubber roof from the same year, and backup power with a 1.1 KwH diesel generator for safety in storms or outages. Folks who moved in had help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and managing medicine, and there was skilled nursing available for short or long stays, and people needing help after a hospital visit could get rehabilitative and transitional services as well, and the staff created memory care environments aimed at helping those with Alzheimer's or other kinds of dementia by keeping things calm and organized to lower confusion and prevent anyone from wandering. Meals always got planned by a registered dietitian, a food service supervisor, and the residents themselves, so people got a say in what was on their plates, and there were menus that changed regularly. Families could take comfort that Narraguagus Bay Health Care worked with the Department of Health and Human Services, their own employees, and the long-term care ombudsman for making sure if someone needed to relocate, they'd assist with finding alternative care, and they'd announced informational meetings for families and residents to talk things through as the center comes up to its planned closure date of July 22, which came about due to workforce shortages and lower MaineCare reimbursements, with closure formally approved by the Department of Health and Human Services, and the promise that nobody's getting left behind since the building stays open until everyone finds a new place. Residents got a variety of activity programs, like an annual lobster dinner, weekly summer cookouts, outings, cooking classes, movie trips, and live music, and there was always a Christmas Eve lobster stew supper to look forward to, plus folks could choose extra things like private phone lines, cable TV, and in-house hair stylists if they wanted. The center provided comprehensive health care including treatment programs tailored for trauma recovery and addiction, along with basic medical, dental, and behavioral health care, so it's really about offering lots of support to people with all kinds of health backgrounds, and for those looking at future use, the property is set up so it could become apartments, a rooming house, or stay focused on elderly care services, with its big kitchen already there and design ready for different uses. Narraguagus Bay Health Care also brought in culture and learning with arts, music, classical playlists, public affairs programs, and special Maine-themed radio and TV shows, including Maine Public Classical, State of the Art, musical programs, the Maine High School Quiz Show, Maine Public Film Series, climate and news coverage, and even PBS Kids programming, plus on-demand content and podcasts, making sure folks had entertainment, news, and education right at their fingertips, with everything listed in an A-Z format to keep it organized for the residents.
