    Friendly staff, good care, cautious

I was impressed - the staff at Saint Joseph's are overwhelmingly friendly, professional and compassionate; my loved one got attentive, high-quality rehab and care. The place felt clean, home-like, and not noisy, with good PT/OT and welcoming common areas. My concerns: the building is dated, meals are inconsistent, and I witnessed slow call-bell responses, staffing gaps and a few management/communication lapses that could affect urgent situations. Overall I'd recommend it for the caring team, but go in eyes open about facilities and safety practices.

About Saint Joseph's Rehabilitation & Residence

Saint Joseph's Rehabilitation & Residence sits in Maine and has stood for over 50 years as a non-profit center, now working under MaineHealth, with a focus on both short-term and long-term nursing care, skilled rehabilitation, memory care, and post-acute services, so residents get help for almost every need, and people pick this place for different reasons like recovering from a hospital stay, memory problems, or needing a place to live daily with full-time support. The facility keeps to a high compliance standard, regularly inspected, most recently in August 2024, and usually gets an A grade for following regulations, though reports do mention some deficiencies around rights, care plans, and pharmacy practices, and there was a recent change in ownership alongside a nurse turnover rate that's a fair bit higher than the state average, with staff numbers shifting between 128 and 175 employees, but nurse staffing levels are higher than most places with about 5.48 hours per patient each day and a constant commitment to medication safety and resident protections. Saint Joseph's has 170 certified beds, seeing around 97 residents most days, and offers services that range from personal care and long-term care to focused therapies like occupational, speech, and physical therapy, all aimed at rebuilding health and independence, with areas set aside for rehabilitation sessions and programs meant to support both physical and spiritual needs in a homelike setting. You'll find therapy and medical professionals on staff, with everyone from RNs, LPNs, and CNAs to therapy specialists, dieticians, and social workers, plus the support of a family and resident council, which helps shape daily life and feedback around the facility. They offer both hospice and respite care, palliative care, and pay special attention to pressure ulcer prevention, which marks them out, and accept Medicare and Medicaid, remaining open to all backgrounds and incomes, while donations help support the nonprofit mission. The place keeps all main areas wheelchair accessible and has onsite parking and restrooms visitors can use, and while it's not a continuing care retirement community, Saint Joseph's does focus on helping people recover, grow strong again, and feel comfortable in an environment that aims to treat every resident with respect and dignity, always keeping in mind the need for individualized care and keeping up with both state and federal care standards. Staff like Mr. Jonathan Dahms and Ms. Peggy Farrington help run things, and despite its A+ BBB rating and a recognition as one of Maine's top nursing homes, the administration openly shares about recent deficiencies and works toward continual improvement, so families and residents get a clear, straightforward view of facility strengths and current challenges.
