    Caring staff, clean but expensive

I placed my mom here and overall we had an amazing experience - staff were warm, attentive and knowledgeable, leadership communicated clearly (especially during COVID), the community is clean, active and family-like, and hospice/medical care was comforting. It's best for fairly independent residents; response times and some services slipped during staffing shortages. Major downside: very expensive (no Medicaid), with price hikes, upcharges and occasional billing/unresponsiveness - and there were a few isolated safety/management concerns to watch. If you can afford it, I'd recommend it for the caring staff and clean, welcoming environment, but read the contract and monitor charges closely.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The consolidated reviews of Sunrise of Annapolis present a broadly favorable impression of the community’s environment, culture, and many aspects of care, tempered by recurring operational concerns—principally staffing, cost, food variety/quality, and a minority of serious safety/management complaints. A majority of reviewers emphasize warm, compassionate staff, a clean and attractive facility, robust activities and social engagement, and an overall home-like atmosphere that many residents and families greatly appreciate. However, a noticeable subset of reviewers report declines in staffing levels and care consistency, billing/administrative problems, and isolated but serious safety or management incidents. Taken together, the pattern suggests a community that delivers strong person-centered strengths but faces recurring operational challenges that have affected some residents' experiences.

Care quality and staffing: Many reviewers praise caregivers and nurses for being attentive, compassionate, and knowledgeable; specific positive notes include staff who know residents by name, timely nursing oversight, feeding assistance, twice-daily vitals checks, and supportive hospice care. Memory-care is highlighted as secure and safety-focused, with locked areas where appropriate. That said, staffing shortages and turnover are frequent themes. Several families reported long call-bell response times, med techs being pulled into non-nursing tasks (cleaning, meal delivery with minimal help), residents being left unattended (including very concerning anecdotes such as being left on the toilet), and an assertion that the community can struggle to meet needs for residents with high-acuity or late-stage care. Multiple reviewers emphasized that staff work hard and are caring, but are stretched thin—leading to slower responses and occasional lapses in dignity and timely assistance.

Facilities, cleanliness and atmosphere: The physical plant and grounds receive consistently strong praise. Reporters often mention a beautiful facility with well-kept gardens, courtyards, wraparound windows and pleasant common spaces. Many reviewers said the building is clean, bright, and home-like (fireplaces, comfortable sitting rooms). Room types vary: private suites and large apartments are highlighted positively, but some residents occupy companion/shared suites or smaller rooms with shared baths to reduce cost. Housekeeping reports are mixed: numerous reviewers praised the spotless condition and absence of odors, while others reported lapses in cleaning and laundry services that required family intervention.

Dining and activities: Dining and activities are major strengths for many residents. Multiple accounts describe three meals daily plus snacks, bistro dining and happy hour options, and engaging menus (some reviewers said they loved the food and savored every bite). Conversely, there are many comments describing bland or institutional food, limited menu creativity, and a desire for more fresh produce, spices and variety. The activities program is repeatedly praised—bingo, arts & crafts, outings to shops and restaurants, posted monthly schedules, mobile happy hours and social events create an active, social environment. For many residents the social offerings and outings significantly improved quality of life.

Management, communication and safety: Many families report excellent communication from leadership, quick problem resolution, and responsive directors who are available and helpful—particularly noted during pandemic restrictions when COVID-focused communication and safety protocols were valued. On the other hand, there are multiple reports of administrative and financial friction: families cited upcharges, double charges (e.g., hair care), charges after a resident’s death (which reviewers noted were allowed by contract), and unhelpful business office responses. Security-related problems were reported by some families (missing purses, jewelry, and checks), raising serious concerns about resident safety and the facility’s handling of valuables. A small number of reviewers alleged more severe issues—claims of staff intoxication on shift or medication-safety neglect—which are serious if accurate; these incidents were reported by reviewers and should be weighed carefully and investigated by prospective families.

Cost, access and fit: Pricing and value-for-money are recurring themes. Many reviews call Sunrise of Annapolis expensive and cite price hikes as a reason for leaving. The lack of Medicaid acceptance was noted and makes the community less accessible to many families. Several reviewers felt the community was out of range financially despite its strengths. Fit is also a consistent point: reviewers emphasize that Sunrise works well for residents who are fairly independent or require moderate assistance and who benefit from social engagement; it may be less appropriate for residents requiring heavy, high-acuity care without private supplemental nursing.

Patterns and recommendations: The most consistent positive themes are caring staff (when adequately staffed), a warm, home-like environment, clean attractive facilities, a strong activities program, and good communication—especially in pandemic-era safety decisions. The most consistent negative themes are staffing shortages and turnover leading to inconsistent care or delays; inconsistent housekeeping/meal assistance at times; pricing and billing issues; and occasional serious security or management allegations. Prospective families should: (1) assess staffing levels on different shifts (including weekends and evenings), (2) ask for details about billing practices and contract clauses (charges for services, post-mortem billing), (3) inquire about theft prevention and valuables protocols, (4) sample meals and review recent menu cycles, (5) evaluate whether the unit can meet higher-acuity needs or if private nursing is required, and (6) request references from recent families and ask management how they have addressed reported staffing or safety incidents. Overall, Sunrise of Annapolis appears to offer many strengths that make it a highly recommended option for many families, but there are nontrivial operational and financial considerations that should be carefully explored before committing.
