    Beautiful home, attentive staff, communication

I was relieved by a seamless move-in - the home is beautiful, immaculate, and feels like family. The owner and staff are caring, organized, and attentive; rooms are spacious and comfortable, meals are home-cooked, activities like bingo keep residents engaged, and medical/medication management is competent with in-house doctors. My main concerns are spotty communication (no room phones, calls sometimes go unanswered despite promised callbacks), occasional noise from outside, and limited accessibility in places. Overall I'm very pleased with the care but those operational gaps keep it from being perfect.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive with consistent praise for the quality of care, the cleanliness and upkeep of the home, and the warm, family-like atmosphere. Many reviewers single out the owner (frequently identified as a nurse) as knowledgeable, kind, patient, and responsive; staff are repeatedly described as professional, friendly, attentive, and reassuring. Multiple accounts emphasize that residents are clean, personable, and appear happy and well cared for, suggesting effective day-to-day caregiving and personal attention.

Facilities and environment receive high marks: the home is described as immaculate and very well-kept, with spacious private spaces and generous common areas (large living room, sunroom, formal dining, large kitchen, courtyard, and front porch). Several reviewers note that rooms are roomy and residents have personal storage (dressers, chairs), and that the interior is attractive and well-adapted for seniors. Some reviewers explicitly mention accessibility features such as wide stairs and, in at least one case, a chairlift. However, there are mixed reports about accessibility (see concerns below).

Dining and activities are clear strengths. Multiple reviewers praise the food — described as great, amazing, or home-cooked — and some observed positive health effects in residents (for example, weight gain when desired). The facility appears to maintain a regular activity program with bingo nights, table games, outdoor activities, and social events that help residents form friendships and engage socially, including support for memory-care residents.

Management, admissions, and clinical support are generally seen as positive: several reviewers cited a smooth, relieving move-in/admission process, organized management, competent medication management, and availability of in-house doctors and referrals. These points indicate a facility with established clinical processes and administrative order.

Notwithstanding the many strengths, there are recurring concerns that prospective families should weigh. Communication lapses are reported by multiple reviewers: the lack of room phones, difficulty reaching staff (times when phones or doors went unanswered), and instances where the 24-hour callback promise did not meet expectations. One reviewer explicitly stated they would not recommend the facility because of these communication problems. Accessibility is another mixed area — while some reviewers note a chairlift and wide stairs, others report that a chairlift is not present and that accessibility is lacking; this inconsistency suggests features may vary by unit or that perceptions differ.

Noise and neighborhood issues appear in a minority of reviews but are noteworthy: some caregivers or visitors reportedly play loud music and children playing in the yard daily were cited as negatively impacting residents’ well-being. The neighborhood was described as 'a little so-so' by at least one reviewer. Additionally, there are repeated remarks that many rooms are shared, so families seeking private accommodations should verify availability.

In summary, Almost Home II Assisted Living, Inc. is described by most reviewers as a clean, spacious, and well-run home with warm staff, strong caregiving, good meals, and engaging activities. The owner’s clinical background and visible involvement are frequently highlighted as assets. Potential concerns include inconsistent communication/contactability, variable accessibility features, shared-room prevalence, and occasional noise or neighborhood drawbacks. Prospective residents and families should consider visiting in person, asking specific questions about communication protocols (room phones, phone-answering policies, emergency contact routines), confirming the availability of private rooms and accessibility equipment (chairlift, wheelchair access), and observing noise levels during different times of day before making a placement decision.

About Almost Home II Assisted Living, Inc.

Almost Home II Assisted Living, Inc. sits in Gwynn Oak, MD, and looks after up to eight residents in a small, family-like setting where folks get help with daily needs like showering, dressing, grooming, bathroom use, and moving around, and they make sure people keep their dignity while getting the care they need. The home is licensed by the State of Maryland and keeps up with all health and safety rules, and it's run under the owner Ms. Valerie Turner. There are private and semi-private rooms, and the place has wheelchair accessible parking and entrances so getting in and out is easy for people who use mobility devices. Staff can help with medical care like insulin injections, two-person transfers, diabetic care, non-ambulatory and incontinence needs, and they're awake around the clock if needed.

People who stay at Almost Home II can expect three homemade meals a day, and the cooks can adjust meals for special diets or medical needs. The facility offers assisted living, memory care, and help for those with dementia, as well as hospice services if needed, and they can arrange for home health care and non-medical home care too. Residents get help getting to medical appointments, running errands, and going to religious services, and the house has a traveling hairdresser for haircare needs.

The home tries to keep life active and interesting with scheduled events, offsite trips, outdoor common areas, and indoor activities like board games, fitness routines, movie entertainment, music programs, and creative activities, and sometimes they bring in things like pet therapy and music therapy. Folks can use community spaces, spend time outside, and take part in evening events and games, which helps people make friends and feel at home. The goal is to let people live as independently as possible, but with plenty of support close by, and there's always someone friendly on staff ready to help out. The place is BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, and it's been keeping that up since 2001.
