    Good facility but staffing issues

I placed my mother here and at first it was wonderful - a beautiful, spotless facility with compassionate, attentive staff, excellent memory-care programming, frequent outings/activities and generally good food. Over time we experienced high staff turnover and inconsistent care: missed checks, long-unanswered call bells, weekends/nights understaffed and some safety/neglect incidents that worried us. Management responses were uneven; families reported abrupt discharges and denied readmissions that left them feeling helpless. If you value cleanliness, activities and caring caregivers it can be an excellent fit, but go in eyes-open about staffing, room size, dining limits, cost and potential management issues.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive: many families and residents praise Symphony Manor for its compassionate staff, strong memory care, vibrant activities program, cleanliness and upscale feel, and overall sense of community. A large number of reviewers describe highly personalized care, attentive nurses and aides, a dedicated activities director, and frequent outings to local restaurants, museums and theaters. Multiple reviewers specifically recommend the facility for memory care, citing knowledgeable managers and staff trained in dementia care, as well as good integration between memory care and assisted living sections.

Staff and care quality are recurring themes with two distinct patterns. On the positive side, numerous reviewers emphasize genuinely caring front-line staff, supportive nursing teams, and an individualized approach to residents’ needs. Front desk, nurse practitioner, and activities personnel are singled out for exceptional performance; families frequently note improved mood and activity levels for their loved ones. However, a notable subset of reviews raises serious concerns about staffing stability and responsiveness. Complaints include understaffing (particularly on nights and weekends), unanswered call bells, and reports of overworked employees. Several reviewers describe episodes of inconsistent care or sudden changes in behavior by management that resulted in reduced programs or perceived declines in attention to residents.

Facility and safety impressions are mostly favorable. Many reviewers mention the building’s polished, upscale environment: bright, clean common areas, courtyard, spacious lobby, and safety-conscious design elements (balconies, motion detectors, infrared monitoring, and regular checks). These features contribute to an overall sense of a secure and well-maintained campus. At the same time, some reviewers feel that room sizes are small for the price charged, and a few mention housekeeping could be improved to meet expectations given the cost.

Activities and social life receive strong praise: regular daily programming (exercise, trivia, cooking), on-site events, and numerous off-site trips several times a week are frequently cited as major strengths that enrich resident life. Many reviewers say the activities team excels and that the program exceeded their expectations. Conversely, a number of reviews describe program cuts or limitations after management changes or due to imposed restrictions, which reduced off-campus trips and on-site options for some residents.

Dining is generally well regarded; multiple families call the food excellent and a highlight of campus life. However, several reviewers point out limited menu choices (occasionally only a single meal option) which can be a drawback for residents who expect greater variety at a higher price point.

Management and administration receive mixed evaluations. Many families report accessible, proactive leadership and highly personalized management that coordinates care well. Others report management turnover, inaction when safety concerns are raised, blaming of residents for problems, and even accusations around review authenticity. A few reviews describe abrupt and distressing discharge events — including a lack of warning and denied readmission — that represent serious red flags for those accounts. These negative management reports are fewer in number than the positive ones but are severe when they occur, and they tend to center on communication breakdowns and policy enforcement.

Value and cost considerations are split. Several reviewers explicitly state that Symphony Manor is high-end and worth the price for the level of care, activities, and environment provided. In contrast, others question the cost given small room sizes, limited dining options, or perceived declines in care quality after reported management changes. Practical concerns also appear around couples in memory care (some facilities or wings require separation or relocation) and geographic distance for some families.

In summary, Symphony Manor is frequently described as a clean, upscale community with strong memory-care expertise, an active life-enrichment program, and many compassionate, resident-focused staff. These strengths make it a compelling option for families seeking quality memory or assisted living services. However, recurring reports of understaffing (especially nights/weekends), occasional inconsistent care, management turnover or poor responses to serious incidents, and higher costs with some limitations (room size and meal choices) warrant careful vetting by prospective residents and families. Recommended next steps for those considering Symphony Manor are: visit at different times of day (including evenings and weekends) to observe staffing and activity levels; ask for recent staffing ratios and turnover data; review discharge/readmission policies in writing; sample meals and inquire about menu variety; and request references from current families, particularly those in memory care, to confirm consistency of the positive experiences many reviewers describe.

    About Symphony Manor

Symphony Manor sits in the first planned suburban community in North America, with some nice views of the historic Roland Park Water Tower, and the building itself has a large front door and a comfortable, home-like feeling, not much like a typical assisted living place at all, with cozy, comfortable apartments designed for independent living, memory care, assisted living, nursing home services, and even continuing care, so there's a place for older adults as their needs change, and even though there aren't lots of named features, the apartments are accessible and come with emergency alert systems, so safety is clearly a priority, and staff are around 24/7 to help with everything from medication management and bathing to dressing and mealtime, plus there are nurses on staff and a doctor on call, with visiting therapists and other health professionals dropping by.

People who move in can bring cats or dogs, and pet care is available, while those needing extra help with things like transfers, insulin injections, or behavior support can be managed with skilled staff ready, even for those with memory issues who might wander or act out, and the secured, purpose-built memory care area is in its own building, where technology like alarm bracelets help prevent wandering, so families don't have to worry so much about safety, and with activities like stretching, yoga, art, cooking, karaoke, Wii bowling, wine tasting, trips, and so on-about 150 events every month, hosted by a full-time activity director-there really is a lot for seniors to do, whether that's indoors in the sitting rooms, piano area, spa, and dining area or outdoors in the common areas or perhaps just socializing with friends or staff.

Meals happen in a restaurant-style dining room, and people can have guest meals, dine privately, get room service, or choose from menu options that include international dishes and special diets like gluten-free, low sodium, or low sugar, and Wi-Fi is available along with strong privacy features using things like Meta Pay and Meta Quest, plus there's easy access to social media so folks can connect with others, and transportation services are arranged for trips or appointments, or residents can park their own cars if they're still driving, while weekly housekeeping, linen service, and status checks are built in to help everyone feel safe and comfortable.

Symphony Manor's management and staff build real connections with residents, supporting seniors to stay as independent as possible, with personal care plans based on regular health evaluations, and they're able to support individuals who have complicated needs, strange behaviors, or need help with everything from mobility to communication, so it's a small, close-knit, and active place offering a safe, warm, and relaxed lifestyle, with a focus on comfort, dignity, and personal choice as needs change throughout the years.
