    Family run cottage caring staff

I live here and I'm very happy - the owner is on-site and the small, family-run cottage feels like home. Staff are caring, friendly and attentive, treating me with dignity and respect; my room is immaculate, well-decorated and the gardens and wooded grounds are beautiful. Meals are good, meds are managed, and residents make friends easily. It's a hidden gem for end-of-life care and I highly recommend it, though they can be understaffed, activities are limited and some repairs are ongoing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Nichols Senior Care is strongly positive, with frequent praise for the personal, homelike environment and the quality of hands-on care. Multiple reviewers emphasize that the owner is present, dedicated, and personally involved in maintaining high standards of care. The facility is described repeatedly as family-run, small, and a "hidden gem" or "hidden jewel," language that underscores a perception of a warm, intimate setting rather than an institutional environment.

Care quality and staff performance are standout themes. Reviewers consistently describe caregivers and staff as attentive, caring, friendly, and respectful, noting that residents are treated with dignity. Several comments call out the staff for being engaged and attentive, and there are specific endorsements of medication administration and excellent end-of-life care. Reviewers report residents being happy, making friends, and receiving compassionate support in difficult stages of life. The presence of the owner on site is highlighted as a positive factor contributing to responsiveness and a consistent standard of care.

Facilities and environment receive strong positive mentions: rooms are described as clean, immaculate, free of odors, and well-decorated. The property’s grounds -- gardens and a wooded setting -- are repeatedly praised for their beauty, contributing to a cottage-like, homey atmosphere. These aspects combine to create a comfortable, attractive physical environment that reviewers appreciate and that reinforces the facility’s small, family-run character.

Dining and clinical basics are also endorsed. Reviews note that meals are good and that medications are administered reliably, which are important day-to-day practicalities for families evaluating a care home. These points bolster the impression of dependable, routine care in a small, personalized setting.

On the critical side, reviewers raise consistent concerns about staffing levels and programming. Multiple summaries mention the facility being understaffed; this appears to be the primary ongoing complaint and is linked to limitations in the breadth of activities offered. A shortage of staff is cited along with a lack of resident activities, suggesting that while direct caregiving is attentive, there may be fewer organized social, recreational, or therapeutic programs than families expect. Several reviewers also note ongoing repairs and maintenance, indicating some facility upkeep issues that management is addressing but which are noticeable to residents and visitors.

The facility’s small size is presented as a double-edged characteristic. It is central to the positive, cottage-like atmosphere and close-knit relationships among residents and staff, and it is part of what prompts strong recommendations from families. At the same time, size contributes to limits in resources and programming; reviewers imply that a smaller staff and fewer onsite activities can be a drawback for some residents who need more engagement or specialized services.

In summary, Nichols Senior Care is portrayed as a caring, clean, and well-managed small facility with an owner who is personally involved and staff who are compassionate and attentive. The physical environment and social warmth are repeatedly praised, as are basic clinical functions like medication administration and end-of-life care. Primary areas for improvement are staffing levels, expansion or enhancement of resident activities, and completing ongoing repairs. For families seeking a personable, family-run, home-like setting where residents are treated with respect and can form friendships, reviewers frequently highly recommend Nichols; families prioritizing a wide range of activities or more robust staffing may want to discuss those specifics with management before deciding.

    About Nichols Senior Care

Nichols Senior Care sits in Edgewood, Maryland at 1111 Hanson Road, tucked into a green, wooded area with gardens for quiet walks or just a nice seat outside, and the place is small with only 16 licensed beds, so folks living here get more personal attention from staff who always seem busy helping someone or sitting and talking in the living room, and the rooms come in different sizes like private, shared, and studio setups, all clean and simple with an easy layout to move around in, and for those who like company, there are group activities like Bible reading or games in common areas with HD TVs and a games room. The place handles care for many needs, offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and nursing home level services, so whether someone needs help just getting dressed or full help with transferring and bathroom needs, there are trained staff and a nurse on call all the time, day and night, with a focus on safety since there's a 24/7 security system. Folks with Alzheimer's or other memory issues have special support like dementia-friendly menus, reminders for daily needs, and staff who pay close attention to comfort and routine. Meals cooked in-house come with a dietitian's oversight, and all the meals are included, which makes it easy for people not to worry about shopping or planning, while the kitchen stays open for anyone wanting to make their own snack or tea. Housekeeping and laundry are handled, and there are beautician and barber visits right inside, so there's less need to travel for appointments, though rides are arranged for people who want to get out for errands, plus there's a fitness room, walking paths, and a chapel for those wanting to keep active or attend services. Nichols Senior Care welcomes pets, offers a home-like feel, and aims for upper-class standards without being too fancy, focusing on a tidy, odor-free, and comfortable place where staff really notice if someone's having a good or bad day. Families say it's something of a hidden gem because of steady, attentive care and a sense that staff and owners put effort into making each person feel known and safe, and the custom care plans adjust if someone's needs change. All of this comes together for seniors in Edgewood and nearby areas who want a mix of freedom, support, good company, and reliable care in a comfortable place that's not too big or crowded.
