    Beautiful facility, inconsistent neglectful care

I found the facility beautiful, clean, and welcoming, and many front-line staff (nurses, PT/OT, admin) were genuinely caring and helpful. That said, staffing is inconsistent and understaffed, and I experienced poor medical follow-through, inadequate/irregular therapy, delayed responses and instances of neglect that led to falls, dehydration and infection concerns. Food and dining were frequently poor or inconsistent, and billing felt money-focused and inconvenient (extra charges, no online portal). Communication and documentation were hit-or-miss - admin could be responsive, but clinical accountability was unreliable. I'd consider it for short, closely supervised rehab; I would not trust it for long-term or dementia care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Lorien Elkridge is mixed and highly polarized: many families and residents report excellent, compassionate care in a clean, attractive facility with strong rehabilitation services and supportive staff, while other reviews raise serious safety, medical, and operational concerns including allegations of neglect, infection control failures, and administrative problems.

Staff and interpersonal care are the most frequently mentioned positive themes. Multiple reviews describe staff as friendly, warm, attentive and compassionate. Specific employees and leadership (names like Tymeka Brown, Darolyn Slater, Sabrina, Melissa, Nick, Folashade, Gina and others) are singled out repeatedly for exceptional service. Families report welcoming front desk and cafeteria staff, detailed orientation, seamless transportation arrangements, and a strong sense of community. Many reviewers noted that caregivers “go the extra mile,” provided emotional support, respected dignity, and helped residents adjust. In several accounts nursing, therapy, and administrative teams are praised for being proactive, professional and helpful, and some families say they would choose the facility again for rehab because of outstanding PT/OT and rehabilitation outcomes.

However, a substantial set of reviews describe troubling clinical and safety problems. Several reviewers report alleged medical neglect resulting in hospitalizations, delays in medication (including pain meds delayed by hours), dehydration due to inadequate fluid administration, and poor responsiveness when clinical concerns arose. There are explicit claims of facility-acquired illnesses: pneumonia, COVID-19 cases (including discharge of residents who tested positive), and at least one report alleging sepsis due to improper hand-washing. Reviewers describe delayed physician input, rapid changes in medication (e.g., meds changed multiple times in days), missed or interrupted therapy leading to loss of function (examples include missed week(s) of therapy and inability to straighten a leg), and a fall after discharge. These reports suggest inconsistent clinical oversight and gaps in infection control and care coordination in some instances.

Operational and staffing concerns are recurring. Many comments point to understaffing, high turnover, chaotic staffing changes, and variability in staff skill and bedside manners across shifts. Nighttime aides and some nurses are described as slow to respond, with instances of residents left in soiled beds or waiting long periods for bathroom assistance. While some reviewers note improved performance and responsive administration in later interactions, others report lost finance/billing records, no online payment portal, inconvenient billing practices, and unexpected charges (for example for a remote or room phone). Communication problems include unreturned calls, lack of timely updates, records not provided to families, and inconsistent enforcement of visitation or testing policies.

Facility, amenities and activities are generally praised. The building and grounds are described as beautiful, clean, and well-maintained with a pleasant atmosphere, separate nursing and apartment sides, and available apartments for assisted living. Many reviewers appreciated the social environment, events (tailgate, Peak & Pie), and thoughtful touches for veterans or special occasions. Rehabilitation-focused programming is viewed positively by many — “best of three rehab facilities” and “excellent PT/OT” appear in multiple comments — though this is not uniform across all stays.

Dining and food service receive highly variable feedback. Several reviews praise appetizing meals and well-presented food, while others call nutrition “extremely poor,” with complaints about repetitive or unappetizing items (e.g., diced carrots repeatedly), raw or undercooked items (waffles), overcooked or over-seasoned dishes, small portions, and meals not delivered as ordered. This inconsistency suggests variability in kitchen operations or menu management over time or across units.

Management and responsiveness show mixed performance. Some reviewers commend administrators for being approachable, proactive, and involved in problem resolution — citing rapid outreach on important issues and noted improvement over time. Other reviewers mention administrator departures, pending changes, or unprofessional management behavior, and describe systemic problems (lost records, immature assistant managers, billing disputes). Several reviews explicitly note that services and responsiveness improved over time, indicating efforts to address concerns, while other reviews convey the opposite — that problems persisted despite communications.

Patterns and recommendations for prospective families: the reviews show a clear pattern of high variability — experiences can range from exemplary, attentive rehab and compassionate long-term care to serious care lapses with medical consequences. Positive indicators include named staff and leaders who receive consistent praise, a clean and welcoming environment, good rehab services for many residents, and active social programming. Red flags in multiple reviews include inconsistent infection control, medication and hydration problems, therapy interruptions causing loss of function, understaffing and shift-to-shift variability, billing and record-keeping issues, and occasional reports of neglect or safety incidents.

For families considering Lorien Elkridge, the reviews suggest due diligence: ask specific questions about staffing ratios (day/night), medication administration protocols and emergency physician access, infection control policies and testing before discharge, how therapy schedules are guaranteed and monitored, how families are notified of clinical changes, and billing/payment procedures (including whether an online portal exists). Visit the facility multiple times across different shifts, request recent quality metrics and incident reports if available, and speak with current families about continuity of care. The facility demonstrates many strengths and has strong, praised staff and amenities, but the documented variability and the serious clinical concerns in some reviews mean prospective residents and families should verify that the particular unit and care team assigned can meet their clinical and safety needs prior to placement.
