    Compassionate supportive care, highly recommended

I placed my mom at College Manor and have been incredibly grateful - the family-owned, long-tenured staff provide extraordinary, respectful, and compassionate care, quick to respond and very supportive even in her final days. The historic Gothic Revival building and beautifully landscaped grounds feel homey and peaceful; rooms are comfortable, meals are fresh, and there are plenty of activities. Move-in was smooth, communication is easy, and I highly recommend them.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for College Manor Assisted Living overwhelmingly emphasize a warm, home-like environment run by a family-owned team. The dominant themes are personal, attentive care; long-tenured staff who treat residents like family; and a calm, attractive campus with historic architecture and well-maintained grounds. Most reviewers describe the staff—nursing and support—as friendly, compassionate, and responsive, and many specifically cite strong emotional and end-of-life support. The facility repeatedly receives praise for preserving resident dignity, tailoring care to individual needs, and creating a welcoming, extended-family atmosphere.

Care quality and staff: Nursing and caregiving receive the strongest consistent praise. Reviewers highlight competent nursing staff who respond quickly to calls and who provide comfort and individualized care. Multiple accounts describe staff going above and beyond during end-of-life situations and offering emotional support to families. Long staff tenures and comparatively low turnover are noted as stabilizing factors that contribute to consistent, personalized care. Receptionists and management are described as helpful and easy to work with, and the admissions/move-in process is frequently described as smooth and communicative.

Facilities and grounds: College Manor’s physical setting is a repeated positive: reviewers mention a beautiful Gothic Revival building with historic touches (stained glass, multipurpose rooms) and a bucolic campus with gardens and a calming stream. Residents’ rooms are described as spacious, comfortable, and able to accommodate personal furniture, which contributes to the “feels like home” impression. At the same time, reviewers also note that the building is older and has some maintenance needs—specific mentions include a nonworking pipe organ and the general aging character of the structure.

Dining and activities: Dining is another frequent strength—meals are described as fresh and enjoyable, with breakfast sometimes delivered to rooms and social lunch/dinner opportunities. The community supports a range of activities: bi-weekly bingo, movies, games, live musicians, family dinners, and volunteer programming. Several reviewers described entertainers and musicians who add value, even noting generosity by performers on special occasions. However, a recurring operational drawback is that events sometimes have low attendance and the activity calendar may not always be kept up to date, which can make the program feel inconsistent at times.

Communication and organization: Most reviewers praise the staff’s responsiveness, but a subset raise concerns about communication and organization. Problems cited include an out-of-date activity calendar, occasional disorganization, and inconsistent event turnout. These issues appear to be operational rather than fundamental to the quality of care, but they affect the resident experience and are worth probing when evaluating the community.

Negative outliers and risks: While the majority of feedback is positive, there are some serious negative reports that should not be overlooked. One reviewer characterized the facility in extremely harsh terms—mentioning mouse infestation, neglect, unprofessional staff, resident deaths, and financial motivations. These are severe allegations and stand in stark contrast to the bulk of reviews praising compassionate care. Given this discrepancy, those concerns should be considered isolated but verified: prospective families should ask management for pest-control records, incident/complaint logs, staffing ratios, and references to assess whether these issues are systemic or exceptional.

Overall assessment and recommendations: The overall pattern portrays College Manor as a family-run, resident-centered assisted living community with a warm culture, stable staff, quality nursing attention, pleasant dining, and an attractive historic campus. Most reviewers would highly recommend it based on daily care, emotional support, and the home-like environment. However, because of the building’s age and a few operational weaknesses (communication, calendar maintenance, occasional low event turnout) plus at least one alarming negative report, prospective residents and families should conduct an in-person tour at multiple times of day, observe mealtimes and activities, ask specific questions about pest control and maintenance, review staffing and incident records, and request recent references from families. Doing so will help confirm whether College Manor’s many strengths align with an individual’s needs and whether any reported problems have been addressed.

    About College Manor Assisted Living

College Manor Assisted Living sits in Lutherville Timonium, Maryland, right on 11 acres of peaceful gardens and walking paths, in a big house that used to be a girls' college back in old Lutherville, and the place has a family-owned, home-like feeling that a lot of folks over 90 years old seem to appreciate since most who've stayed there can tell you there's a warmth to it that's hard to find. There are 80 assisted living units, and you can pick either private single rooms or suites, all with private bathrooms, some with kitchenettes, and every room is air-conditioned and comes furnished, so there's comfort and privacy whichever way you go. Residents get three meals daily, prepared with care in a restaurant-style dining room, and dietary needs, like diabetic diets and special restrictions, are part of the plan so everyone eats well, and there's always help with dressing or bathing, getting around, taking medicine, and other daily things, with nurses in charge and doctors visiting when needed, and a staff led by Director of Nursing Jessica Ostendarp and Director of Nursing Operations Cindy Riddick. There's a strong focus on memory care and Alzheimer's support, and College Manor has secure settings, smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, and personal call systems for safety.

You can see fresh flowers on tables and maybe somebody's playing on the grand piano, or a group is heading outside for gardening, a stroll through the landscaped grounds, or catching a planned trip into town, because there's always something happening like activities led by Jessica Riddick, who organizes day trips, social meetings, painting, games, gardening, and even shopping, so it's easy to keep busy or be with friends. The library, activity center, gaming room, computer center, wellness center, and beauty salon are open, and folks can take part in tai chi, physical therapy, fitness, or join a book club. Extended family-assisted living, independent living, nursing home care, and even respite care-short term or long term, for surgery recovery or just some help after an illness-are available, and you'll find every resident can set their own daily schedule.

The care fits what each person needs and isn't just one-size-fits-all, so seniors get personal help without giving up independence, and the community puts a lot into helping folks feel comfortable and connected, with healthy meals, regular social activities, transportation for appointments or shopping, and plenty of places to relax, from sunny courtyards with seating to a country view out the back. The facility is run by a steady team, with Robert Renaud overseeing operations, John Horine as managing director, Jane Banks as owner, and a contact point known as Bar Tender, all focused on making life safe and enjoyable, not fancy or fussy. Housekeeping, linen, and maintenance are routine, and families can take virtual tours if they want a look before coming out in person, which is handy. College Manor doesn't put on a big show, but it does offer a reliable, peaceful, and caring spot for seniors who want help but still like a place that feels a bit like home, with enough happening to keep minds and hands busy day after day.
