    Beautiful grounds caring staff happy

I moved my mom to Sunnybrook and we love the gorgeous, woodsy, well-landscaped grounds and bright, nicely decorated apartments with great views. The staff across management, dining, housekeeping, activities and maintenance are friendly, caring and go above and beyond - they provide housekeeping, meds on file, call-button safety, transportation to appointments, weekly shopping and lots of activities (cards, bingo, exercise, movies, mall trips). The community is clean, well-maintained, affordable, and social; dining is reliable with alternatives and take-out (some find the food bland) and COVID has limited some outings, but overall my mom is happy and making friends.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews of Sunnybrook Estates are strongly positive, with frequent praise for the staff, cleanliness, grounds, amenities, and social atmosphere. The dominant sentiment is that Sunnybrook is a well-maintained, welcoming independent living community where residents feel cared for and supported. Multiple reviewers emphasized the facility's attractive, woodsy campus and well-landscaped grounds, which contribute to a peaceful, homey environment and plenty of outdoor enjoyment.

Staff and care quality: Staff receive consistent, high marks across reviews. Care, front-desk, dining, housekeeping, maintenance, and activities personnel are described as caring, personable, and willing to go above and beyond. Reviewers noted proactive check-ins, thorough tours and follow-up calls during move-in, and staff who build strong relationships with residents. Several reviewers specifically mentioned that caregivers watched over residents attentively and that families felt comfortable leaving loved ones in staff care. The presence of call buttons and medical/medication records on file adds to a feeling of safety and responsiveness for independent living residents.

Facilities, grounds, and apartments: The property itself is repeatedly described as beautiful, cheerful, and well-maintained. Highlights include walking trails, birdhouses, abundant trees and flowers, and thoughtfully landscaped grounds. Common spaces such as the dining room, living room with a grand piano, beauty parlor, and on-site movie theater were singled out as attractive features. Apartment offerings (studio and one-bedroom units with kitchens) were viewed positively: units are kept clean and neat; apartments are painted and sometimes furnished between residents; and weekly housekeeping is available. Reviewers who toured or visited were impressed with the up-to-date appearance despite remarks that parts of the building are older and that renovations are ongoing.

Dining: Dining impressions are mixed and worth noting. Several reviewers praised the menu, the availability of three meals per day with alternatives, and take-out options, while other reviewers described the food as bland or said their family member did not like the meals. A few reviewers had not eaten on-site, limiting their ability to comment. Management appears to be responsive to feedback, with at least one mention of improvements to the meal schedule. Overall, dining is available and structured, but satisfaction varies by resident taste.

Activities and social life: Sunnybrook appears to offer a robust schedule of activities that support social engagement and mobility. Reported activities include bingo, church services, card games, exercise classes, mall and movie outings, weekly shopping trips, and organized transportation to doctors’ appointments. Many reviewers noted that residents make friends, stay involved, and enjoy companionship — some long-term residents have formed lasting relationships. The active programing and transportation services are frequently cited as strengths that help maintain independence and social life.

Management, maintenance, and updates: Reviewers consistently described management and maintenance as competent and helpful. The community is described as proactive about updates and renovations, and staff responsiveness extends to move-in processes (painting units, furnishing as needed) and ongoing property upkeep. At the same time, multiple reviews referenced that the building has older elements, and some parts or new sections were noted as not yet fully opened — a transitional state that some prospective residents should expect.

Notable patterns and concerns: The primary concerns across reviews are mixed food quality (some find meals bland), COVID-era dining restrictions and closures that have affected communal dining and activities for some residents, and the fact that parts of the property may still be transitioning or not fully opened. The building’s age was mentioned, although reviewers usually paired that with comments about excellent maintenance and continuing renovations. Affordability and the central location near grocery stores were recurring positives. A few reviewers had limited firsthand experience with dining or services, so some comments reflect secondhand impressions.

Conclusion: Taken together, the reviews paint Sunnybrook Estates as a clean, attractive, and socially active independent living community with a strong staff culture and many resident-centered amenities. It is especially notable for its landscaped grounds, helpful and caring staff, and plentiful activities and transportation options. Prospective residents should be aware of mixed dining reviews and temporary limitations tied to COVID policies or ongoing openings/renovations, but overall the community is portrayed as a welcoming, well-run, and affordable option for seniors seeking independent living with supportive services.
