    Compassionate care with minor issues

I had a great overall experience - the facility is secure, very clean, and residents receive compassionate, consistent care in a homey atmosphere with lots of activities and convenient proximity to family. My loved one adjusted well, enjoyed a private room and special services, and the staff (mostly warm and professional) encouraged independence. However, a few staff were rude/unprofessional, communication about hiring/background checks was poor, and some rooms can feel crowded with limited privacy and occasional odors. Overall I highly recommend this facility with those caveats.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is predominantly positive, with multiple reviewers praising the caregiving staff, the cleanliness of the facility, and the range of programs and services offered. Repeatedly mentioned strengths include compassionate, loving and consistent care from staff who are viewed as friendly and respectful; many accounts describe residents as well cared for and comfortable. Several reviewers emphasize a warm, home-like atmosphere and a family feel, and the facility is reported to encourage independence while providing appropriate activities and special services. The dining experience received favorable comments (food "smells great"), visitation experiences were described as pleasant, and convenience to relatives was noted as a plus. One reviewer explicitly mentions an Alzheimer’s-care award in 2016 and positions the facility as ahead of other local options in that area, which reinforces a perception of clinical competence for memory-care needs.

Care quality and staff: The strongest and most consistent theme is high-quality personal care and attentive staff. Many reviewers used words like "compassionate," "loving," "exceptional care," and "well taken care of," suggesting that daily caregiving — assistance with activities of daily living, supervision, and interpersonal interactions — is a major strength. Staff friendliness and respectful treatment are highlighted repeatedly, and several reviewers are happy enough to highly recommend the facility. However, this positive picture is tempered by isolated but notable reports of unprofessional behavior (for example, slamming down pens, audible sighs, doors being shut loudly) and a negative hiring/background-check interaction that left an applicant confused and dissatisfied. These incidents point to occasional lapses in staff demeanor and communication rather than a systemic deficiency, but they are significant because they affect family trust and impressions.

Facilities and rooms: Reviews indicate the facility is generally clean and comfortable, but there is meaningful variability in the physical accommodations. Some reviewers praise private rooms and the overall comfort of the environment; others describe small, crowded four-bed rooms, a small kitchen, and spaces that felt "prison-like" or like an "old house." Urine odor was reported in at least one review, suggesting episodic housekeeping or incontinence management issues in specific areas. The presence of both private-room praise and multi-bed crowding suggests the facility offers different room types or has sections that vary substantially in condition and layout. Prospective families should expect variability and ask for a tour of the exact unit/room being considered.

Activities, services, and specialized care: Multiple reviewers note an active program of activities and special services. The facility is credited with encouraging independence and providing a stimulating environment, and the 2016 Alzheimer’s-care award mentioned by a reviewer suggests expertise in memory-care programming relative to other local options. Overall, activity programming and special services appear to be real strengths that contribute to resident well-being and family satisfaction.

Dining and atmosphere: Dining is reported positively (food is appealing and smells good), and the overall atmosphere is described as warm and at-home. Several reviewers say the facility feels cozy and family-oriented, and visitation is pleasant. The facility is also described as secure, which provides reassurance around resident safety.

Management, communication, and consistency: While many reviews reflect satisfaction with staff and management, there are clear concerns about communication and consistency. One reviewer described poor communication concerning a background check and confusion around hiring decisions; others noted rude or disrespectful staff behavior. Combined with the disparity in room quality and occasional odor issues, these comments point to unevenness in operational management — strengths are evident in care and programming, but execution (cleaning, staff training or culture, and transparent communication) appears inconsistent across cases.

Bottom line and recommendations for prospective families: MT Gems Assisted Living receives strong endorsements for caregiving quality, cleanliness in many areas, friendliness of staff, robust activities, and memory-care capability. However, reviewers also report variability in room size and privacy, occasional odor or maintenance issues, and isolated unprofessional staff behaviors and communication lapses. Prospective residents and families should consider visiting in person, asking specifically to see the exact room or unit being offered, meeting direct-care staff, inquiring about staffing training and turnover, and clarifying policies around admissions/background checks and housekeeping. The facility appears to provide high-quality, compassionate care for many residents, but due diligence is warranted to ensure the specific living space and staff team meet your expectations.

    About MT Gems Assisted Living

MT Gems Assisted Living in Great Falls, Montana, is a locally owned and operated community made up of two Victorian homes called Ruby House and Sapphire House, each set up with both private and semi-private rooms that come with flat screen TVs and extra wide hallways for easy movement, and when you look outside, there's a big private and secure yard plus communal decks, some covered and some not, where residents can sit and enjoy the weather or sunshine as they wish. This facility supports seniors with a range of needs, from independent assisted living to specialized care for dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, Lewy Body Dementia, and Down Syndrome with Alzheimer's, and they have special care programs they call MT Gems that focus on helping each resident in a way that matches what they require day to day. There's an active calendar to keep residents' minds and bodies busy, and those who want to can go out to local parks or restaurants, or they can join devotional services, talk with visiting beauticians, or play games and enjoy group time indoors or outside. All meals are made to be nutritious with good quality ingredients and they try to make it feel relaxed and home-like, while always making sure safety comes first. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, with a big focus on companionship and kindness among staff and residents, and the caregivers are known for being supportive and attentive, which helps residents and their families feel confident about the care.
