    Warm, compassionate, attentive family-style care

I chose this community for my mom and have been very pleased - warm, compassionate staff who know residents by name, a clean, home-like environment, excellent meals she loves, and plenty of activities and outings. Move-in was smooth, nursing and rehab support are solid, and staff were informative and comforting throughout. I recommend it for attentive, family-style care.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Greystone Farm at Salem is frequently described as a small, home-like community with consistently praised frontline staff. Across reviews families and residents commonly highlight compassionate caregivers, CNAs, and nurses who provide attentive support; many note 24/7 nursing availability and accessible on-site rehabilitation (PT/OT/speech). The facility’s size and layout foster staff familiarity with residents and a family-oriented culture, and communal spaces — including a bistro/cafe and resort-like first floor — are often described as clean, pleasant, and well maintained.

Care and staffing: Clinical care receives generally positive remarks for attentiveness, individualized care planning, and continuity for residents with progressive needs. Several accounts emphasize strong aide performance and effective coordination during transitions (hospital to rehab to the community). That said, a pattern of inconsistent nursing skill mix and episodic staffing shortages emerges in reviews: examples include uneven clinical knowledge for specific medical needs (for example, catheter management concerns), delayed response times to pendant calls, and variable nurse presence across shifts. These operational patterns point to variability in care reliability rather than uniformly poor care.

Dining and activities: Dining is a mixed but overall positive area. Many families describe nicely presented meals, menu choices, and the ability to customize plates; the bistro/cafe option and social dining areas are frequently praised. At the same time, reviewers occasionally cite inconsistent portion sizes, overcooked or dry entrées, and intermittent beverage/service lapses. Activity programming is another strength — the community offers a broad calendar (exercise classes, musical events, outings, holiday nights, and memory-care programming) and makes efforts to socialize residents — though participation levels and COVID-related restrictions at times limit the schedule.

Facilities and amenities: The building and grounds are generally described as clean and well cared for, with inviting common spaces and a small-community feel that many families appreciate. Contrastingly, apartment-level issues recur: some units are described as small or claustrophobic, and there are reports of cleanliness and dust accumulation requiring family attention. The campus lacks certain fitness/aquatic/theatre amenities noted by prospective residents, and transportation resources are limited both in frequency and in vehicle suitability for some outings or appointments. The memory-care unit is available and active, but reviewers noted spatial/layout constraints relative to expectations for that level of care.

Management, communication, and cost: Administrative and director-level staff receive frequent praise for compassion, move-in support, and family engagement; many families credit leadership for smooth transitions. However, operational concerns include gaps in phone responsiveness and administrative follow-up, perceptions of corporate ownership and profit-orientation, and suggestions that staffing compensation or retention could improve. Cost is a commonly mentioned factor: pricing is viewed as higher than alternatives and can be a limiting factor for affordability; the facility also does not accept Medicare, which is an important consideration for decision-making.

Notable patterns for families to weigh: Greystone Farm appears to deliver warm, resident-centered daily care in a small, well-kept environment with active programming and good rehabilitation support. Prospective residents should balance those strengths against trait-level limitations: variability in nursing staffing/clinical consistency, smaller apartment sizes and occasional cleanliness lapses at the unit level, limited on-site fitness and transportation infrastructure, communication responsiveness, and relatively high fees. For families prioritizing personalized staff attention, on-site rehab, and a close-knit community, Greystone Farm is frequently recommended; for those requiring larger apartment footprints, robust fitness amenities, guaranteed Medicare acceptance, or consistently high clinical staffing ratios, further investigation and direct discussion with management are advisable.

    About Greystone Farm at Salem

Greystone Farm at Salem sits at 242 Main Street right in the heart of Salem, New Hampshire, and if you're looking for a place with a bit of history, you'll notice the beautifully restored antique loom that adds some nostalgia to the atmosphere and reminds folks of simpler days, and while the setting feels like a country spot surrounded by natural woodlands and trees, you're still close to shopping, dining, and the bus lines for days when you need to get out, and the place sits off Route 97 near the Massachusetts border, making it convenient for visits. Residents live in thoughtfully designed apartments that feel comfortable and familiar, where staff members help with personal care such as bathing, dressing, and medication reminders-but also provide skilled care on-site for those who need more medical attention, since Greystone Farm offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, respite care, and even skilled nursing all in one campus, so as care needs change over time, residents can adapt without needing to move somewhere new.

The community keeps a busy calendar-there's always social, educational, and entertaining activities going on to keep friendships active and minds sharp, with both indoor and outdoor spaces so people can sit with friends or join group activities, and they even have mind and memory care programs for folks living with Alzheimer's or dementia, with dedicated caregivers who focus on kindness, compassion, and patience, and the environment stays safe and secure for those who need a little more support. You'll find chef-inspired meals with seasonal menus, vegetarian options, private dining for special events, and they'll even modify diets to suit health needs-plus, weekly housekeeping, laundry, linen changes, maintenance, and trash pickup take those worries away.

The staff works hard to help each resident stay as independent as they can for as long as possible, encouraging people to make their own choices but stepping in with a helping hand whenever it's needed, and for those needing a break or recovering from surgery, respite care options mean families and residents get dependable care for as little as a few days or as long as a few weeks. Folks here also benefit from transportation assistance, appointment support, parking, and wheelchair-accessible showers, plus community traditions and devotional services both on and offsite, and there's an onsite beautician for those days when you want to pamper yourself. The warm, cozy setting and the strong focus on family, friends, and fond memories make it a comfortable spot to call home, with all the needed help close by and a genuine sense of community throughout the whole place.
