    Helpful therapy, neglectful nursing, avoid

I placed my loved one here and had a mixed, mostly frustrating experience. The CNAs (Will) and some aides/therapists were excellent - PT/OT and activities were helpful and meals decent - but nurses were frequently rude, unresponsive, and showed little compassion. We saw missed or delayed meds, ignored call lights, lack of bathroom assistance, unsafe infection handling, and poor communication from management. Staffing seemed inadequate and overworked, and administration was unresponsive; advocacy was required to get basic care. I'd consider it only for short-term rehab with constant oversight - otherwise I would not trust it for long-term care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is highly polarized but leans toward serious concern. Multiple reviewers recount positive experiences concentrated around therapy services, certain CNAs/aides, and particular medical interventions, while an even larger cluster of reviews details systemic problems with nursing care, staffing, communication, and management responsiveness. The result is a facility where outcomes and experiences appear highly dependent on individual staff members and the unit or shift encountered.

Care quality and staffing emerge as the most frequently cited themes. Many families report understaffing and overworked nurses, producing long waits for assistance, delayed or missed medication (including pain medications), and instances of neglect such as patients being left in soiled clothing or feces and being left unattended in wheelchairs for extended periods. Several accounts describe disrespectful and degrading behavior from nurses, with aides and CNAs often singled out as the ones who provided actual hands‑on care and compassion. A minority of reviews, however, highlight excellent nursing care and commend prompt, life‑saving action by hospital clinicians — underscoring significant inconsistencies in care depending on personnel and timing.

Medication management and clinical coordination are recurring problems. Reported issues include delayed prescriptions, incorrect medications, and reported difficulties getting medication on time. Some reviewers mention problematic interactions with the in‑house physician or delayed access to prescriptions. Infection control and clinical safety are also concerns in a handful of reports: C. difficile and pneumonia were mentioned, along with distressing descriptions of how infection notifications and COVID‑19 cases were handled (e.g., patient removals and perceived unsafe practices). There are also isolated but severe reports of prolonged critical care (CCU) stays and at least one death noted in connection with care experiences, which heightens family concerns.

Therapy/rehab, dining, activities, and facilities receive mixed but more positive commentary. Many reviewers praise PT/OT, with some noting daily therapy and effective rehab that supported short‑term recovery. Several reviewers speak highly of meals, activities, the front lounge, and the outdoor courtyard, and some specifically recommend the facility for short rehabilitative stays. Conversely, other reviews criticize therapy as inconsistent or limited to only a few days per week and describe PT staff or doctors as condescending in isolated incidents. Cleanliness reports are similarly mixed: some describe the facility as clean and safe, while others report filthy rooms and poor housekeeping in specific cases.

Communication, administration, and family engagement are problematic for many families. Common complaints include poor communication about a loved one’s status, staff hanging up on callers, denial of basic information, and being told to speak with unit managers who fail to respond. Several families felt forced into insurance‑driven discharges or found administrative/social work processes unhelpful or obstructive. These management-related issues exacerbate clinical concerns because families feel they must advocate strongly and continuously to secure basic care needs.

There are notable positives worth preserving: several aides/CNAs received heartfelt praise (one named CNA Will), and multiple accounts describe compassionate, professional staff members, effective wound care, and rehab outcomes that led to recovery. Also, reviewers who experienced the connected hospital services reported life‑saving interventions and strong acute care. However, pervasive and repeated negative reports about neglected patients, medication errors, disrespectful nursing behavior, and unresponsive management form a consistent pattern that prospective residents and families should weigh carefully. In summary, while some patients receive excellent rehab and compassionate caregiving, the facility demonstrates uneven performance with recurring operational and clinical gaps that have caused significant distress to many families.

About Hackensack Meridian Health Nursing & Rehabilitation - Brick

Hackensack Meridian Health Nursing & Rehabilitation - Brick gives seniors a good mix of care services with a focus on health and comfort, so you'll see things like skilled nursing, long-term care, short-term rehab, memory care, and hospice all under one roof, and people can come in for help after surgery, for wound care, or for things like stroke recovery or amputee rehab, which is handy if you or your loved one needs either a short stay or ongoing support, and the staff's there around the clock to help with everyday needs, medication, meals, and different kinds of medical therapy. The therapy department offers speech, occupational, physical, and respiratory services, and there's a special palliative care team ready for those who need extra support due to serious illness. There are also special programs for things like stroke recovery, wound care, vestibular rehab, lymphedema, and support for folks with Parkinson's disease called LSVT BIG. The facility works hand-in-hand with Ocean University Medical Center, so the care ties in with other kinds of hospital services if someone needs them, and you get access to skilled nursing staff, dieticians, pharmacists, and rehab workers all on site. The place welcomes Medicare and Medicaid, which makes paying for care a bit easier for many families, but it doesn't work as a CCRC, so you won't find a full range of retirement living levels all the way up like in some communities. There are both inpatient and outpatient therapy programs, so people can get rehab even if they aren't moving in, and they offer hospice and respite care in case a caregiver at home needs a break for a short while. The place keeps a regular grade of A-plus in state inspections year after year, and it's been called a Best Nursing Home in New Jersey several years running, landing in the top fifty facilities, which probably comes from having careful staff records, personalized care, and attention to the small details like good meal planning and clean living spaces with both private and semi-private rooms. Residents and their families get a voice through resident and family councils, and there are planned activities, memory-stimulating programs, and different fitness, recreation, and social opportunities. People have access to a computer center, wellness room, library, common dining area, beauty salon, and even arranged transportation if someone has a doctor's appointment or needs to go out. The staff tries hard to keep things friendly and respectful, working to create a positive space where everyone feels safe and known, and there are many amenities like well-balanced meals, accessible living quarters, and housekeeping services that help make life easier for both long-term residents and those coming in for a short stay. The operating hours are pretty flexible to fit visitors' needs, and the whole place is set up so people can focus on healing, comfort, and everyday living with the support of a multi-disciplinary team who's seen all kinds of medical needs over the years.
