    Compassionate homey care worth it

I placed a loved one at Westwind Manor and I'm very grateful - the staff are phenomenal, compassionate, and treat residents like family, giving personal, professional 24-hour care and regular updates. The restored manor feels clean, homey and welcoming with spacious rooms, many activities, and home-style meals (usually delicious); staff encourage participation and are very responsive. Caveats: it's small with some shared rooms/baths and limited privacy, meals are occasionally not piping hot, and it's not suitable for advanced dementia/memory care. Fees are higher but, for us, worth the peace of mind.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews of Westwind Manor is strongly positive, with repeated emphasis on caring staff, a family-like atmosphere, and individualized attention that comes from a small, home-style setting. Many reviewers describe staff as professional, intuitive, kind, and responsive — often going beyond basic duties to provide personal support, regular updates to families, and private phone/text access for communication. Owner and management involvement is regularly cited as a strength; leadership is described as hospitable and informative. These human qualities are the most consistent and prominent strengths across the reviews.

Care quality and availability are also highlighted as reliable. Multiple reviewers note 24-hour care, on-site nursing involvement, medication dispensing, and periodic doctor and rehabilitation visits, which give families confidence in day-to-day clinical oversight. Safety and monitoring receive specific mention — video cameras and personal alert monitoring are used — contributing to impressions that residents are safe and well-supervised. There is an upcoming skilled nursing facility planned, which reviewers referenced as an expansion of capabilities, though one review noted tour limitations related to the new facility.

The facility and physical environment are described in largely favorable terms: clean, beautifully restored, and comfortable. The small, house-like or historic manor ambiance is appreciated by many for producing a homey feeling and closer staff-resident relationships; however, that same atmosphere is seen as a negative by a minority who expected a more institutional or modern key-facility look and who raised privacy concerns associated with shared rooms and bathrooms. Several reviews explicitly call out shared rooms and shared baths as privacy limitations, and one review emphasized that two residents per room occurs in some situations.

Dining and food are a recurring theme with generally positive feedback for homemade, well-balanced meals, and multiple reviewers praised the cook and the availability of three meals plus snacks. Several families called the food delicious and appreciated the home-style quality. At the same time, there are isolated complaints: some found the meals only adequate or sometimes not served hot, and one or two reviewers gave lower ratings or noted personal preferences affecting impressions. Cost is also mixed in the feedback: some families find fees expensive, albeit worth it given the care, while others see good value.

Activities, socialization, and community life are often praised: music, crafts, celebrations, external entertainers, outings, and volunteer involvement create engagement opportunities and socialization for residents. Many reviewers said their loved ones were encouraged to join activities and that staff facilitated social connections. Conversely, a few reviews reported limited daytime activities and that some residents were mostly left to themselves, suggesting variability in resident engagement or differences in perception depending on individual needs and preferences.

A notable and consistent caution is that Westwind Manor is not an appropriate placement for people who require memory care for moderate-to-advanced dementia or Alzheimer’s. At least one reviewer described admission despite known Alzheimer’s and needing to move to a memory-care facility shortly afterward. Relatedly, a few reviewers mentioned that higher levels of care might require residents to move elsewhere, which is important for families to consider when choosing placement and planning for changing care needs.

In summary, Westwind Manor’s reviews paint a picture of a small, clean, and welcoming assisted living environment with highly praised staff who create a family-like atmosphere and deliver attentive, compassionate care. The facility offers nursing oversight, safety monitoring, homemade meals, and a variety of activities, with strong communication and owner involvement. Prospective residents and families should weigh the intimate, house-like setting (including shared rooms/baths and possible privacy trade-offs), the limits regarding memory-care capability, and mixed opinions about meal temperature and fees. Overall, for those seeking personalized attention in a small, warm community and who do not require specialized memory care, Westwind Manor is frequently recommended by families and former residents.

    About Westwind Manor

Westwind Manor sits in Franklin, NJ, in a spot with lots of ridgelines, finger lakes, and little brooks from the Delaware Valley, and it feels a bit like a cozy mansion house where people can settle in and feel at ease, and right when you walk in, you see this historic grand vestibule that feels very welcoming, not fancy but friendly and peaceful. The place runs as a registered assisted living facility, so they've got help for things like bathing, dressing, and keeping track of medicine, with a staff of trained, kind professionals who keep an eye on everyone's well-being and safety, making sure folks have a good day without worrying about the little stuff. Folks live in different kinds of rooms-some pick independent-living one- or two-bedroom apartments, some have private or shared bedrooms, and there are pre-furnished choices too if that's easier, and the common spaces, like the big living room with a fireplace, are set up for relaxing, reading, having company, or just enjoying a conversation. There's plenty to do, since they offer things like social activities, exercise classes, and trips outside the manor for folks who like to stay active, and there's even a busy common area and a courtyard with a private fountain if you want to be outside for a while. People who need extra help can get it, but the manor's meant for independent seniors and those who want assisted living without full medical care around the clock, and they also welcome short stays for respite care, whether it's just a few days or a month. Cathy Mendel's the administrative director, and the staff have a way of making everyone feel like part of a family, so the atmosphere's pretty warm and homey, and the manor still keeps a bit of its old charm even with all the updated modern comforts and amenities, things like a spa, a salon, a nice dining area, and a gallery so you can see what the assisted living home looks like before picking a room. The place is open every day, from 8:30 in the morning to 8:30 at night, including weekends, and they even offer a personalized tour and a free lunch for folks thinking about moving in, so you can get a good feel for the space before making a decision.
