    Beautiful campus, attentive, compassionate staff

I'm very impressed with this beautiful, brand-new campus - spacious, updated and welcoming. The staff (Director Esha, Lee Barieri, Cathe and Chef Gil among them) are warm, compassionate and genuinely attentive; communication is excellent, dining feels restaurant-quality, on-site therapy and medical services are convenient, and the varied, resident-focused activities and family events make life engaging - overall a near-perfect, highly recommendable community.

    Summary of reviews

Ridgewood Senior Living at Historic Smithville is consistently described as a new, attractive campus with a home-like atmosphere and modern common spaces. Reviewers frequently praise the physical plant: spacious, updated living areas, a welcoming bistro/restaurant atmosphere, and amenities such as a library, movie room, and event spaces. Leadership and front-line staff receive positive mentions for approachability and visibility, and community launches and public events have created a positive impression in the surrounding area.

Staffing and everyday care are a clear strength in many accounts. Many families and visitors highlight compassionate, engaged employees, a personable activities team, and leadership that takes an active role in resident life. On-site clinical offerings — including physical therapy, a nurse practitioner, a psychiatrist, and dental services — are noted as valuable for residents who prefer consolidated care. Communication practices such as regular family meetings and reportedly prompt issue resolution contribute to a perception of transparency and responsiveness in routine matters.

Dining and programming are repeatedly singled out as highlights. The facility’s restaurant-style dining, varied menu choices, and an emphasized culinary program are described positively; the chef and dining staff are often credited with creating a welcoming meal experience. Activity programming is characterized as creative and resident-centered, with frequent social events, happy hours, and transportation to outings that support engagement and social connection.

Several operational limitations emerge alongside the strong points. A subset of reviewers described inconsistent personal-property handling and occasions when residents’ clothing or belongings were mismanaged, suggesting a need for clearer inventory and tracking procedures. There are also reports that mobility-support equipment and its maintenance (for example, wheelchair fittings or accessories) have been inconsistent, affecting comfort and independence. Relatedly, a few accounts indicate variability in assistance for dressing and for preparation prior to off-site appointments.

More broadly, reviewers express concerns about variability in clinical care responsiveness and team coordination. These accounts point toward uneven staff coverage or workflow challenges at times, and at least one comment referenced staffing levels that felt insufficient for resident needs. Cost is another recurring theme: several reviewers described the community as premium-priced, and some questioned the cost–value balance given the operational gaps they observed.

Overall, Ridgewood presents as a well-appointed, activity-rich community with many strengths in hospitality, dining, and programming, and with visible leadership and clinical services on site. Prospective residents and families assessing the community should confirm specifics around staffing ratios and schedules, procedures for property tracking, mobility-equipment fitting and maintenance protocols, and what is included in pricing and contract terms to ensure those operational areas meet their expectations.

About Ridgewood Senior Living at Historic Smithville

Ridgewood Senior Living at Historic Smithville sits right at 1 N New York Road, across from CVS, in the center of one of New Jersey's best-known historic spots, and it's Atlantic County's newest assisted living community, scheduled to open in early 2024, and it stands out for offering care that supports seniors needing assisted living, memory care for Alzheimer's or other dementia, plus independent living, home care, hospice, and skilled nursing, all under one roof, and the building itself contains 90 beds spread across 26 different floor plans, giving options like one-bedroom, deluxe flat, and studios, with prices starting at $6,300 per month for deluxe flats, $7,000 for one-bedrooms, and $8,300 for memory care studios, and the rooms are shaped to floorplan with lots of natural light, and there's Wi-Fi throughout the whole place.

The inside keeps a historic feeling, with interior walls inspired by Smithville's old architecture, and eight gathering areas where folks can sit and visit, or just rest in the naturally lit lobby that stresses comfort and a neighborly feel, and people have access to a library, a pub, rooftop and upper decks, and a heated outdoor courtyard where you can sit year-round, plus a fitness center and a theater for entertainment, and a meditation center for quiet moments, along with a professional salon and a lounge for beverages in the evening.

There's a restaurant-style dining room and several menu options every day, and you'll find laundry and housekeeping services built in, and scheduled rides for doctor visits and outings, and a dentist, a psychiatrist, and a nurse practitioner are all on site, along with physician services and outpatient rehab if you need it, and on-site physical therapy is also there, so you don't have to leave to keep up with your health, and those needing help after a hospital stay or short-term care can take advantage of respite stays, which provide safe structured recovery or relief for caregivers.

For folks with memory problems, there's a special environment with programs using evidence-based approaches designed to help, and families are invited to regular meetings to stay informed and involved, while day-to-day care is handled by a staff known for good communication and flexibility, led by the Executive Director and Wellness Director, and the whole place tries to keep a personal, welcoming feeling, with social activities, live entertainment, movie nights, group trips, family events, and daily gatherings set up to encourage everyone to connect.

The building is fully accessible, offers high-speed internet in every room, and uses a 24-hour emergency call system, so everyone's comfort and safety is covered, and you'll find therapy programs for physical, occupational, and speech support, and there's a FABULOUS staff-never short on kindness-that helps folks both with the big things and the everyday tasks, and Ridgewood is the only New Jersey facility run by Viva Senior Living, which owns 27 communities across seven states, and while the facility puts a lot of focus on quality and innovation, it remains grounded, always centered around meeting the day-to-day needs of older adults by providing varied services and a sense of home within Historic Smithville.
