    Negligent filthy facility caused deaths

I would not recommend this facility. In my experience it was negligent and unsafe - patients left in urine, strong foul odors and roaches, broken/unsecured equipment, delayed or absent nursing care that led to hospitalizations, infections (including feeding-tube sepsis), and deaths. Administration was unresponsive and sometimes deceptive about care and test results; I plan to report them. A few therapists and nurses were compassionate, but overall the cleanliness, safety, and quality of care were unacceptable - remove your loved ones.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Alaris Health at Essex is highly polarized and inconsistent, with a large number of severe, specific negative allegations balanced against a significant subset of strongly positive experiences. The most frequent and serious themes include claims of neglect and improper clinical care, but there are also repeated positive reports praising therapy, certain nurses, administrators, and the condition of some rooms and services. This creates an unpredictable profile: some families describe the facility as compassionate, well-run, and clean, while others describe neglectful, unsafe, and unsanitary conditions.

Care quality and clinical practices are a central area of concern. Multiple reviews allege neglect such as patients being left in urine, not being assisted with equipment, not being fed, and delayed responses to call bells—particularly during night shifts. There are repeated claims of improper clinical interventions (for example incorrect colostomy bag handling and improper BiPAP use), malfunctioning or missing equipment (broken oxygen tank), and safety failures (unsafe bed rails, unsecured beds and patient falls). Several reviews describe very serious outcomes reportedly linked to care problems, including ICU admissions, sepsis, ruptured bladder, and deaths following stays. Some reviewers explicitly say there was no CPR, no timely medical exam, or that a doctor never arrived. These allegations are severe and recur often enough to indicate systemic risk flagged by multiple families.

Staffing and communication present a wide variance. Many reviewers praised individual staff members—nurses, therapists, social workers, and administrators—and named employees who were caring, professional, and helpful (notably Omar, Eric, and Jalisa in some accounts). Therapy and rehab staff receive particularly strong positive remarks in several reviews. Conversely, a large number of reviews describe staff as untrained, underpaid, inattentive, rude, or negligent. Issues include language barriers, perceived unwillingness to help (being on break/off-duty during calls for assistance), and dishonest or evasive communication with families. Multiple reports describe poor discharge coordination, missed doctor appointments, lack of follow-up on complaints, and even alleged falsification of signatures and documentation related to care planning or billing. The coexistence of highly praised individuals and strong allegations of systemic failures suggests inconsistent staff training, supervision, or staffing levels across shifts and units.

Facility condition and cleanliness are also inconsistent across accounts. Some reviewers describe spacious, private rooms with private bathrooms, no odors, and a generally clean, well-managed environment. Other reviewers report strong foul odors (notably on the fourth floor), urine smells, roaches, peeling paint, power outages, and supplies shortages. Public bathrooms, hallways, and staff responsiveness to routine cleaning needs are specifically criticized in several reports. Renovations and infrastructure issues (peeling paint, power outages) were mentioned and may contribute to the uneven physical environment. These contrasting reports indicate that parts of the building or certain units may be maintained to a different standard than others.

Dining and therapy receive mixed feedback. A number of reviewers praise the food variety and say residents enjoyed meals; several positive accounts highlight that the food is different each day and liked by residents. In contrast, some families complained about poor food and that loved ones were not being properly fed. Rehab and therapy programs received strong positive praise in multiple reviews, with some families crediting therapy staff with excellent care and progress.

Management and oversight themes are mixed as well. Some reports compliment administrators for being accessible, helping with Medicaid, and having an open-door approach. Others describe a lack of transparency, failure to document incidents, lack of proper care-plan meetings, and no visible follow-through on complaints—leading some reviewers to say they planned to report the facility to state regulators, the Joint Commission, or other authorities. Several reviews explicitly urge others to avoid the facility and recommend escalating concerns to regulatory bodies.

Notable patterns include high variability by shift and unit (night shift frequently criticized), isolated examples of excellent individual caregivers, and multiple serious safety and clinical allegations appearing across independent reviews. Because the reviews include both very positive and very negative, severe claims, the overall picture is one of unpredictability: the facility may offer excellent rehabilitative care and compassionate staff in some cases, while other families report blatant neglect and dangerous lapses in care.

For families considering Alaris Health at Essex, these reviews suggest a need for careful, repeated evaluation: visit the unit(s) where a loved one would be housed, inquire about staffing levels and shift coverage, review incident-reporting and complaint-followup processes, ask for names of licensing/oversight contacts, inspect rooms and common areas yourself, and consider monitoring closely especially during evenings and nights. If problems are observed, document them, escalate internally to administration, and consider reporting to state survey agencies or other regulatory bodies as appropriate. The variability in accounts means prospective residents could have strong positive or severe negative experiences, so due diligence and ongoing oversight are recommended based on the reviews provided.
