    Neglectful care, improved under management

I had a mixed but mostly negative experience. I witnessed filthy rooms, sewer smells, rodents and bugs, broken plumbing, unanswered call bells, rude and dismissive staff, delayed/missing medications and medical care that led to hospital visits, and breaches of privacy and dignity. Later under new management I saw real improvements-cleaner facility, kinder staff, helpful nurses and meaningful therapy-so experiences vary; verify current leadership and safety before trusting a loved one here.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment is highly mixed but leans toward serious concern: reviewers report extremes ranging from exceptional, compassionate care to dangerous, neglectful conditions. A notable subset of reviewers praise the therapy team, certain nurses, and the social work/administrative staff for being caring, professional, and attentive. However, an equally large and vocal group of reviews describe major failures in infection control, basic hygiene, maintenance, medication administration, and resident safety. This creates a picture of a facility with stark variability in performance and significant risk areas that have harmed or endangered residents according to multiple accounts.

Care quality and medical management are major fault lines in the reviews. Positive comments consistently highlight effective physical therapy and rehabilitation services, meaningful occupational/physical therapy interactions, and staff who know residents and provide individualized support. At the same time, numerous reports describe delayed or missed medications (including antibiotics), long waits for IV care and methadone, mishandled blood tests and discharges, and instances where nurses were unresponsive for extended periods. Several reviewers reported events serious enough to require hospital transfers (seizures, injury, suspected neglect) and at least a few reviews allege deaths in care or near-fatal outcomes. These patterns point to inconsistent clinical oversight and lapses in standard medication and treatment workflows.

Staff behavior and culture show a sharp divide. Many reviews call out specific staff members and teams as compassionate, friendly, and professional — examples include named nurses and a director who followed up on complaints. Recovery coaching, mentorship, and supportive programs are noted as meaningful by residents and families. Conversely, a large volume of reviews describe rude, demeaning, or even abusive conduct: staff yelling at patients, accusing residents of drug use, treating visitors as nuisances, violating privacy, and in some cases screaming at or abandoning patients. Frequent mentions of unanswered call bells, lack of supervision, and neglect suggest systemic staffing or training shortages in parts of the facility.

Facility condition, cleanliness, and safety are prominent and recurring concerns. Multiple reviewers report dirty rooms, food spills, ongoing pest issues (cockroaches and rats), sewer smells, broken sinks/toilets, leaking fixtures, loose wall outlets, broken soap dispensers, and inadequate cleaning after maintenance. These problems are described as persistent rather than isolated incidents in several accounts. While some reviewers say the lobby and certain areas are clean and pleasant (Halloween decorations, a "cute" environment), the frequent reports of filth, pests, and sanitation failures indicate serious infection-control and maintenance deficits that require immediate attention.

Dining, hydration, and daily living support draw repeated criticism: reviewers mention very poor meals, insufficient portions, and inadequate hydration. Others praise the food and staff in different accounts, reinforcing the inconsistent experience theme. Activities and environment are sometimes noted positively (decorations, welcoming atmosphere), but these are overshadowed in many accounts by neglect of basic needs and nighttime disturbances (e.g., frequent fire alarms, noise at odd hours).

Management and responsiveness show mixed signals. Some reviewers reported tangible improvements under new management, with responsive, knowledgeable staff and new supportive programs introduced. A few reviewers highlighted administrators who were accessible and directors who followed up on complaints. Yet a significant number of reviews describe complaints being ignored, inadequate responses to serious incidents, and calls for regulatory intervention or closure. Allegations of policy violations, understaffing, security issues, and ongoing investigations appear in multiple reviews and indicate the need for external oversight and corrective action.

Patterns and recommendations based on the aggregated reviews: the facility appears to provide strong therapeutic and social support in pockets (notably therapy, certain nurses, social work), but systemic problems in cleanliness, medication administration, maintenance, staffing, and safety are repeatedly reported. The variance by wing/unit and by staff member suggests inconsistent training, supervision, and enforcement of standards. Immediate priorities should include addressing infection control and pest remediation, repairing basic infrastructure (plumbing, outlets, dispensers), auditing and improving medication administration and discharge/test handling processes, ensuring adequate staffing levels and call-button responsiveness, and investigating allegations of abuse and HIPAA violations. Families considering this facility should visit regularly, monitor care closely, document concerns, and escalate serious incidents to management and regulators. Positive reports indicate the facility has capable staff and some good practices to build on, but the frequency and severity of negative reports suggest urgent systemic corrective action is required to ensure resident safety and dignity.

    About Sterling Manor Nursing Center

Sterling Manor Nursing Center in Maple Shade, NJ, offers private, shared, and studio rooms, all furnished and with private bathrooms and kitchenettes, and you get things like cable TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and telephone access, so most rooms feel pretty comfortable, and the dining room has all-day service with restaurant-style meals and can provide options for people with allergies, diabetes, or special diets, which is important for some folks. There's help with things like bathing, dressing, and medication, and residents get supervision around the clock, with nurses on site for 12 to 16 hours daily. The care team supports transfers, mobility, and most activities of daily living, and the building has an emergency alert system and a 24-hour call system in case someone needs immediate help. Sterling Manor has a skilled nursing facility for short-term or long-term stays and takes Medicaid and Medicare payments, and you'll find services for both physical and mental health, including dementia care and addiction recovery programs like methadone maintenance and Suboxone, along with group and individual therapy and mental health activities, so people with different needs can get care here.

You'll also find housekeeping, laundry, move-in coordination, and concierge services included, and there are fitness programs, a fitness room, a movie theater, movie nights, arts and music programs, an art room, a library, a spa, a garden, and a game room, plus social spaces like the outdoor patio, transportation services, and parking, so there's usually something to do or somewhere to go if you want to. Sterling Manor can house up to 124 residents, but because the facility has had a Medicare cutoff, state investigations, and licensing troubles, with large fines over $330,000 and serious citations last year, all the residents have been relocated and there's a plan to close by January 31 unless something changes; the facility has had issues with finances and licensing, and the owners have been included in reports about profiteering. The facility also provides some home care services, has programs like My Adult Foster Care and My Senior Care Hub, and offers remote patient monitoring, care management, family engagement, electronic visit verification, and runs a food program for those living there. The staff have a lot of experience, especially with mental health and addiction care. Sterling Manor's main office hours are Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but it's closed on Sundays.
