    Mom thriving in caring community

I moved my mom in and she's thriving - happy, safe and at peace. The staff are genuinely caring, know residents by name, and go above and beyond; the brand-new, immaculate building feels like home with bright, resort-like common areas. Daily activities, outings, movies and socials keep everyone engaged, meals are varied, and helpful services (rides, salon, attentive nursing) are available. It isn't cheap and mealtime staffing can be thin at times, but overall I highly recommend this warm, well-run community.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment and key themes: Reviews for Arbor Terrace Morris Plains are overwhelmingly positive, with a strong and repeated emphasis on the quality of staff, the cleanliness and appearance of the facility, and a vibrant activity program. Across dozens of summaries, families and visitors repeatedly describe the community as welcoming, family-like, and well-run. Many reviewers use superlatives — “best,” “amazing,” “first-class” — and most explicitly recommend the community. Positive mentions are consistent across different reviewers and refer to concrete strengths: compassionate caregivers, a bright and new building, plentiful activities, helpful admissions staff, and good amenities.

Care quality and staff performance: The single most frequent theme is the high-quality, compassionate care from the staff. Reviews repeatedly note that caregivers know residents by name, show personal interest, and go above and beyond routine duties. Memory care is often singled out as “thorough and reassuring,” and family members say their loved ones thrive socially and medically. Admissions and marketing staff are also praised for making the move-in process smooth and supportive — several reviewers named specific employees (e.g., Amanda, Chris, MaryAnn, Mary Laverty, Doris) as making a positive difference. That said, reviewers also reported isolated but serious concerns: one account described poor medication management, suspicious injuries, and refusal of a Geri chair based on its appearance; others mentioned residents sometimes wearing the same clothes for weeks. These negative reports are not the majority but are significant and warrant investigation by prospective families.

Facilities, cleanliness and amenities: Arbor Terrace is consistently described as brand-new, immaculate, bright, and airy with a hotel-like aesthetic. Reviewers praise the common spaces, well-appointed grounds, seasonal decorations, walking paths, and plentiful outdoor spaces for engagement. Amenities called out include an in-house salon, library, shuttle/transportation to appointments, and well-lit dining areas. Apartments are described as inviting and filled with natural light; some units include kitchenettes and full-size refrigerators. A few reviewers noted that some rooms or dining areas feel small and mentioned assigned seating or two dinner times, but the dominant view is that the facility is very well maintained and designed for comfort and socialization.

Dining and mealtime experience: Dining receives mixed-but-leaning-positive feedback. Many reviewers rave about high-quality, varied meals and attentive waitstaff; multiple families praise specific meals and say residents “rave about meals.” At the same time, several reviews call the food average, limited in options, or lacking fresh/local ingredients. A recurring operational concern is insufficient staffing during mealtimes, resulting in not enough hands to fully assist all residents. This operational gap appears intermittently in reviews and would be important for families to query directly if dining assistance is expected for a prospective resident.

Activities, social life and engagement: One of Arbor Terrace’s strongest selling points is its broad and frequent activity offering. Reviews describe a wide-ranging calendar — Bingo, Mass, karaoke, concerts, movies, crafts, cocktail socials, themed events, daily exercise, outings for shopping/restaurants, and a strong social scene that fosters friendships. There are reports of resident councils and food meetings that involve residents in decision-making, and programs such as a Resident Ambassador initiative help new residents acclimate. Reviewers emphasize that residents are active from morning through evening and that the community fosters meaningful interaction, laughter, and purpose.

Management, responsiveness and patterns of concern: Many reviewers say management is cordial, responsive, and hands-on — citing specific examples of directors attending meetings, quickly addressing issues, and providing ongoing communication during COVID. Conversely, there are repeated but smaller-scale reports of unaddressed concerns: inconsistent responses on paperwork, episodes of unresponsiveness, and at least one report describing a negative staff work environment. Financial concerns recur: the community is described as “not cheap,” with steep rental costs, additional out-of-pocket supplies, and no Medicaid beds available. Some families perceived limited options when funds run out and even described management as profit-driven. Waiting lists and the community’s popularity were noted, reinforcing that affordability and availability are important considerations.

Patterns and recommendations for prospective families: Taken together, the reviews paint a picture of a high-quality, well-maintained assisted living and memory care community with excellent staff engagement, rich programming, and strong amenities. However, there are consistent operational and policy issues to probe during a tour: clarify staffing ratios (especially at mealtimes), ask about medication management protocols and incident reporting, confirm laundry and personal care procedures to avoid clothing concerns, verify admission costs and ongoing out-of-pocket charges, and check Medicaid/financial assistance options and vacancy/wait-list procedures. Also ask for examples of how management resolved past concerns and request references from current families when possible.

Bottom line: Arbor Terrace Morris Plains is strongly recommended by a large majority of reviewers for its compassionate and attentive staff, immaculate and welcoming environment, and vibrant activity program. The most important caveats are cost/affordability, intermittent operational issues (notably mealtime staffing and a few isolated safety/medication concerns), and occasional reports of unresponsiveness from management. For families who can afford the community and prioritize social engagement, quality surroundings, and hands-on caregiving, the reviews suggest Arbor Terrace is an excellent option — but due diligence on the specific operational and financial items above is advisable before committing.
