    Compassionate staff, dangerous facility issues

I had a deeply mixed experience. Many CNAs and nurses (Princess, Simon, Anthony, Naomi and others) and the rehab/therapy team were compassionate and skilled, activities and PT were excellent, and some staff truly went above and beyond - but the facility also had serious problems: poor communication, unresponsive/abusive staff at times, dirty/smelly rooms, broken elevators and nonworking call buzzers, understaffing, neglect leading to infections/bedsores/hospitalizations and even death. Management says things are improving, but given the safety, cleanliness and transparency issues I cannot confidently recommend this place.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the provided reviews is deeply mixed and highly polarized. A significant portion of reviewers praise individual caregivers, therapists, and specific departments — particularly the rehabilitation/physical therapy team and the activities department — citing compassionate nurses and CNAs who went above and beyond. Multiple reviewers singled out named staff (Jamie in admissions; nurses such as Wendy, Simon, Sandra Beckford; CNAs like Princess, Anthony, Naomi; therapists Dana, Bethany, Tiffany, Lyndsey, Lauren) for excellent, attentive care, quick family communications, and successful rehab outcomes. Several families reported the facility felt warm, family-like, well-equipped (therapy room, dialysis area), and in some cases meticulously clean, which provided peace of mind and measurable recovery such as weight gain and regained function.

However, the positive experiences sit alongside numerous and recurring serious concerns. A recurring theme is inconsistent quality of care: some residents reportedly received excellent treatment while others suffered neglect or worse. Multiple reviewers reported neglectful behaviors (not changing adult diapers, not bathing or feeding residents, failing to make beds), medical lapses (severe dehydration, stage IV pressure ulcers/bedsores, prolonged catheterization, urinary tract infections), and alarming hygiene concerns (reports of fungus in feeding, roach/bed bug infestations, foul odors). There are also specific allegations of medication mistakes or medication administration without clear directions. Several accounts describe hospitalization, critical illness after stays, or even death associated with perceived neglect or poor monitoring.

Safety and facility maintenance are prominent and urgent concerns in many reviews. Numerous reviewers described broken or mostly nonfunctional elevators, long waits for working elevators, and at least one reported safety incidents (foot jammed in elevator door). Such infrastructure failures compounded by slow emergency responses and understaffing were cited as creating hazardous conditions. Housekeeping and maintenance complaints (strong urine smells on certain floors, dirty rooms, pest sightings) contrast sharply with other reviewers who described the facility as beautiful and spotless, underscoring a pronounced variability in condition and management oversight. Amenities and services also showed inconsistency: while some praised meals as delicious, many complained about poor, repetitive, or unappetizing food; there were also reports of TV service outages and other amenity lapses.

Communication, management, and administrative practices appear fractured. Several reviews accuse administration and some social workers of poor transparency, unresponsiveness, or even withholding information; others report lost medical records, missing personal items, and billing or financial concerns. Allegations range from misuse of funds and scams to unpaid wages affecting staff morale and retention. Some families described rude, dismissive staff, hung-up calls, and a perception that complaints were not taken seriously. Conversely, other reviewers praised the administration and said new leadership was making improvements, hiring better staff, and strengthening activities — indicating there may be ongoing transitions and uneven implementation of changes.

Taken together, the reviews suggest New Vista Nursing and Rehabilitation Center delivers meaningful high-quality care in specific pockets — particularly in rehabilitation services, some committed nursing/CNA staff, and the activities program — but also exhibits serious systemic issues that have led to multiple safety, hygiene, communication, and clinical-care complaints. The most concerning and repeatedly mentioned problems are neglectful care behaviors, severe medical lapses (dehydration, advanced bedsores, infections), elevator/safety hazards, pest/cleanliness issues, and significant inconsistency between staff/department performance. There are also frequent calls from reviewers for external oversight or state investigation.

For prospective families or oversight entities, the pattern suggests diligence is warranted: verify staffing levels and turnover, ask about recent inspection results and corrective actions, confirm emergency response protocols, inspect elevators and maintenance records, and request written care plans with regular updates and working call systems. Positive reports about standout staff and effective rehab services indicate real strengths worth exploring, but the volume and severity of the negative reports — especially those alleging neglect, safety incidents, and serious medical complications — are significant and should be considered carefully when evaluating the facility.

About New Vista Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

New Vista Nursing and Rehabilitation Center sits at 300 Broadway in Newark and mostly serves folks looking for nursing care, short-term rehabilitation, dialysis, hospice, or memory care. The place has both private and semi-private rooms, and the rooms are decorated to feel comfortable and elegant, not like a hospital, so people can settle in a little easier. You'll find unique programs here, like the Latino Program with bilingual staff, which helps Hispanic residents feel understood, and the Ivy Court Memory Care, which handles memory care in its own careful way. The facility keeps a variety of services going-long-term care for those who need to stay for a while, and short-term rehab for folks recovering from illness or surgery, plus adult day care, behavioral health, and dialysis treatments. The staff takes pride in compassion, which is important since many are dedicated to each care team, and New Vista boasts a five-star rating in both staffing and quality measures, according to standards that matter in healthcare. Residents eat health-conscious meals prepared with care and served in a fine dining style, and while you won't find things perfect anywhere, here you do get meals that look as good as they taste. There are always everyday amenities meant to make life smoother, with things like incontinence care and nursing support to help seniors with health needs. New Vista also runs recreational programs planned for both health and fun, trying to help folks feel active or at least part of things, so they get a sense of community and don't sit around on their own too much. The place does aim to help people feel at home, or as close as you can get in a nursing facility, and the website for the center is at Newvistanursing.com.
