    Beautiful facility, compassionate staff, excellent

I moved my mom here and couldn't be more pleased - the building is beautiful and immaculate, more like a boutique hotel but warm and homey, the food is excellent, and there are plenty of activities. The staff are wonderful - warm, professional, compassionate, and responsive (they know residents' names and made the transition seamless), and memory-care support has been strong so my mom is happier and getting stronger. We had a few minor growing pains early on, but issues were handled quickly; overall I highly recommend Arbor Terrace Norwood.

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews of Tappan (Arbor Terrace Norwood) assisted living and memory care are predominantly positive, with a strong and recurring emphasis on compassionate, proactive staff and a warm, home-like atmosphere. Many reviewers describe the facility as beautifully decorated, immaculately maintained, and having a hotel-like or luxury feel. Families repeatedly praise staff who learn residents' names, build strong relationships, and provide individualized, patient-centered care that gives them peace of mind. The general sentiment is that the community offers a vibrant social environment, varied activities, and excellent dining — all of which contribute to residents’ enjoyment and improved quality of life.

Staff and care quality: Staff are the most frequently lauded aspect. Reviews highlight caring, attentive caregivers, nurses, front desk personnel, activities and admissions staff, and specific team members (frequently named) who go above and beyond. Multiple accounts cite proactive family communication, regular updates and photos, responsiveness to issues, and thoughtful care practices such as assisting with grooming and monitoring vitals. Clinical care and medication management are praised in many reviews; however, there are isolated but notable negative incidents: at least one reported medication mix-up, occasional unfriendly or negligent aides, and statements that some families had to escalate complaints to get action. These negative reports are not the majority but are important patterns — they suggest variability in staff performance and that close family involvement can sometimes be necessary to ensure consistent follow-through.

Memory care: Memory-care experiences are mixed. Numerous reviewers report a seamless transition to memory care with attentive staff and continuity of care, while a smaller number report significant concerns: decline in care after an initial period, incidents of residents being left incontinent, ignored complaints, and an injury described as a fall caused by a kitchen door. Ownership and administrative changes (Atria to Arbor Terrace) were mentioned alongside reports of internal communication breakdowns; some families felt corporate representatives did not adequately address their concerns. The contrast between many positive memory-care transitions and these concerning reports points to inconsistent experiences within the memory-care unit and the need for prospective families to ask detailed questions about staffing ratios, supervision, and incident reporting.

Facilities, amenities, and dining: The physical plant and amenities receive very high marks. The building is regularly described as light, bright, modern, beautifully decorated, and clean with pleasant smells and comfortable suites. There are multiple common areas, outdoor patios, and well-sized rooms. Dining is a standout offering for many reviewers: restaurant-style service, diverse menus, buffet brunches, and chefs who adapt meals to residents’ preferences. Several families reported initial menu concerns that were quickly addressed by staff and culinary leadership, indicating responsiveness. Housekeeping, laundry, maintenance support, and move-in assistance are also consistently appreciated, though occasional operational glitches (laundry, cable, or maintenance delays) were reported and usually resolved in a timely manner.

Activities and social life: The activities program is robust and frequently praised for encouraging social interaction and physical activity — offerings include senior yoga, group exercise, arts and crafts, live music, cultural-themed events, theater outings, and virtual world tours. Reviewers emphasize that activities are thoughtfully curated and that the community promotes camaraderie and meaningful engagement, which many families see as a major benefit to their loved ones’ emotional well-being.

Management and operations: Reviews about management are mixed but lean positive. Several reviewers name and praise directors and staff in admissions and executive roles for being professional, helpful, and responsive. Others note growing pains, especially around ownership transitions and early periods of disorganization; those situations reportedly improved after staff training and leadership attention. A recurring practical theme is that families often need to stay involved — following up on care tasks or service requests — to ensure everything is completed to their expectations. That recommendation appears rooted more in real-world caution than in systemic failure: many families still rated responsiveness and follow-through highly after escalation.

Patterns and recommendations for prospective families: The dominant pattern is one of an overall high-quality community with standout staff, excellent dining, strong activities, and an attractive, well-kept facility. However, there are consistent caveats around variability: occasional staffing shortfalls, isolated clinical errors, and mixed experiences in memory care and higher-level responsiveness. Prospective residents and families should tour the community (many reviewers recommended specific tour staff), ask for recent incident/complaint handling examples, inquire about staffing levels in memory care, and clarify processes for communication and escalation. Staying engaged in the early months helps resolve issues quickly when they arise.

Bottom line: Tappan (Arbor Terrace Norwood) appears to deliver excellent assisted living for most residents, driven primarily by a compassionate and proactive staff, high-quality amenities, strong dining, and enriching activities. While a minority of reviews describe serious concerns — especially within memory care or during managerial transitions — the larger majority reflect gratitude, trust, and satisfaction. The community is best suited for families who value an active social environment, restaurant-style dining, and attentive staff — while being prepared to maintain involvement during the initial transition period to ensure consistency of care.
