    Unsafe, poorly managed nursing home

I appreciated that many aides and nurses were warm and attentive and the tour/dining staff were friendly, but overall this place felt unsafe and poorly managed. My mother was terrorized by a roommate, staff often did nothing, she developed bedsores, declined, was hospitalized and ultimately died under unclear circumstances - we involved police, the health department and the Justice Center. Security was lax (residents roaming or sleeping outside, heavy smoking), belongings and meds went missing, and administration was unresponsive. Rooms were small and institutional, cleanliness and grounds were uneven despite renovations; meals and activities were hit-or-miss. Not the right place for my mother.

    Summary review

The reviews for Hedgewood Home For Adults present a highly mixed and polarized picture, with some reviewers reporting positive, caring experiences and others describing serious, even alarming, problems. Positive comments frequently mention friendly, attentive staff; cleanliness; good meals; affordability; and meaningful activities. Several reviewers praised the dining experience (described as delicious or top-notch), the presence of aides and nurses and a doctor nearby, opportunities for customization of rooms, the nearby Beacon/shopping area, and visible renovations or improvements underway. Multiple accounts emphasize welcoming tours and approachable owners or management, and some long-term residents report improved quality of life and satisfaction with staff care.

Contrasting sharply with the favorable accounts are multiple reports of severe safety, neglect, and management failures. Several reviewers described incidents where residents were found sleeping outside, with police involvement and notifications to the health department and Justice Center. Allegations include resident starvation, unattended wounds and bedsores, theft of personal belongings, assault of residents with staff inaction, and medication mishandling. These reports are amplified by claims of repeated state complaints and investigations. Reviewers described a perceived shift toward an institutional, understaffed, and control-focused environment that can leave vulnerable residents without adequate supervision or care.

Care quality and staffing appear highly inconsistent across accounts. While some reviewers describe hands-on, family-like staff and attentive care, others report staff shortages, unprofessional conduct (including hanging up on calls and rudeness), and failure to respond to emergencies or complaints. Several reviews note that the facility may not be suitable for residents needing higher-acuity care or close supervision; one reviewer explicitly said it is ‘‘not a nursing home” and another called it an ‘‘assisted depression facility.” There are also reports of abrupt care transitions or evictions (kicked out during rehab), poor communication around discharges, and belongings mishandled or stored without clear processes.

Facility and environmental conditions also vary in reports. Positive reviews highlight very clean, updated decor and ongoing renovations, while negative reviews mention run-down grounds, odd odors, messes left by residents, and insufficient maintenance. Room size and layout are described by some as small and unimpressive, with concerns about placement adjacent to the general population and hallways where loud or boisterous behavior occurs during meals. Smoking and instances of residents begging for money were noted as sources of discomfort for some family members.

Dining and activities emerge as an area with split impressions: several reviewers praised the food and activity offerings (board games, fishing, lots of activities), and tours frequently highlighted a pleasant dining area. Other reviewers, however, criticized small portions or awful food, and noted that disruptive resident behavior during meals can reduce the dining experience. Activities and social life appear to be a positive when staff are engaged and consistent, but problematic when oversight and resident mixing are not well managed.

A recurring theme is the facility’s inconsistent management and accountability. Some reviewers commend approachable owners and staff who listen and make changes; others describe an administration that is defensive, unwilling to hear complaints, or unprofessional on the phone. The presence of multiple state complaints and investigations in the reviews is a significant red flag for prospective residents and families and suggests systemic issues for some periods or shifts.

Overall, Hedgewood Home For Adults shows starkly divergent experiences: a subset of reviewers report compassionate, clean, and affordable assisted living with active improvements underway, while another subset reports neglect, safety incidents, and management failures severe enough to involve law enforcement and state oversight. Prospective residents and family members should consider these patterns carefully, seek up-to-date regulatory records, ask detailed questions about staffing levels, supervision, incident history, and care transitions, and, if possible, arrange multiple visits at different times to gauge consistency of care, safety, and environment before making decisions.
