    Beautiful views, poor care management

I moved my mother into Oceanview Manor (assisted living) and have mixed feelings. The building, ocean views, renovated rooms and some staff are wonderful - clean rooms, landscaped grounds, and a few caregivers went above and beyond. Unfortunately my overall experience was very negative: management was unresponsive, communication poor, care unreliable, and I encountered instances of staff rudeness, apparent neglect and even an incorrect death certificate - unacceptable. Food and day-to-day care were inconsistent, parts of the facility felt dirty and unkept, and activities were limited. I'm grateful for the few compassionate staff, but I wouldn't recommend Oceanview Manor until leadership and staffing improve.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly mixed, with a clear split between reviewers who praise Oceanview Manor for its setting, many aspects of its care, and its staff, and those who report serious concerns about cleanliness, staff behavior, and management. The facility frequently receives positive mentions for its oceanfront location, panoramic views, landscaped outdoor spaces, and a tranquil seaside atmosphere. Multiple reviewers highlighted spacious, modern or recently renovated apartments and attractive communal areas such as lounges, a dining room, and recreation spaces. For many families the assisted living program led to improved happiness and wellbeing for residents, and some cited the facility as an affordable and reliable option.

Staff quality is one of the most polarized themes. Numerous reviewers describe staff as exceptional: attentive, cheerful, dedicated, and going above and beyond so residents feel valued and cared for. These reviewers report professional, warm welcomes, helpful receptionists, and caregivers who build genuine connections with residents. Conversely, other reviews allege serious staff problems—rude receptionists, idle or uncaring staff, verbally abusive behavior toward residents, and poor bedside manners. This variability suggests inconsistent staffing or variability in shifts and personnel; prospective families should ask about staff turnover, supervision, and recent training when evaluating the community.

Care quality and management receive similarly mixed feedback. Several reviewers praise outstanding care, dependable assisted living services, and professional, dedicated providers. However, other reviews describe poor care standards, neglect, and notably severe administrative failures—one reviewer cited an incorrect death certificate and unresponsive management. Multiple accounts of poor communication and unresponsiveness from management are a red flag and point to potential systemic issues with complaints handling and administrative oversight. Tour coordination problems (such as no one available for a scheduled Saturday tour) further illustrate lapses in front-desk/administrative operations.

Facility maintenance and cleanliness show stark differences between experiences. Many residents and visitors report a very clean, well-kept facility with no odors, ongoing renovations that improve the environment, and modern elegant décor. Others, however, describe the facility as dirty, filthy, and unkept, with staff appearing idle and residents seemingly neglected. Because cleanliness and upkeep vary between reports, it is important for visitors to verify current conditions in person, ask about recent renovation completion dates, and inquire about housekeeping schedules and infection-control practices.

Dining and activities are similarly mixed but provide some consistent positives. Several reviews praise a clean dining area, readily available fruit, and meals that residents seem to enjoy. Other reviewers report very poor food quality. Activities are available in many forms—TV, games, exercise, outings to the patio or seaside, and an exercise room—but COVID-19 restrictions and other operational issues led some reviewers to find few activities during their visits. A number of reviewers noted a strong sense of community when group meals and activities were running, while others noted quiet periods with residents staying in their rooms.

Location-related factors are generally favorable but not universally so. The oceanfront setting, promenade, and views are repeatedly praised and are major selling points. Yet at least one reviewer called attention to an unattractive immediate neighborhood element—a vacant lot across the street with garbage—and reported limited public transportation. Financial considerations are also mixed: some reviewers found pricing good and considered the facility affordable, while at least one reviewer noted that Medicaid was not accepted, which could limit options for some families.

Patterns and recommendations: the dominant pattern is inconsistency. Many reviewers are highly satisfied—citing great staff, lovely facilities, and improved resident wellbeing—while others experienced significant problems related to cleanliness, staff behavior, food, and management. Because of this variability, prospective residents and their families should (1) visit multiple times at different hours and days of the week to observe staff, meals, and activities; (2) ask directly about staff turnover, training, and supervision; (3) request references from current families and, if possible, speak with recent families who had negative experiences to understand resolution attempts; (4) verify acceptance of payment sources (e.g., Medicaid) up front; and (5) inspect room arrangements (private vs. roommate), housekeeping schedules, and complaint escalation procedures. The facility offers many strong attributes—ocean views, ample common spaces, and the potential for excellent care—but the mixed reports about safety, cleanliness, and management responsiveness are significant and should be investigated thoroughly before committing.
