    Caring staff, active community, pricey

I live here and overall love it - the staff (Joan, Meg and team) are outstanding and responsive, the activities are nonstop (pool/aquaerobics, yoga, theater, art, games, van trips), and the spacious, pet-friendly 2-bed apartments with a great continental breakfast exceeded my expectations. The building is newer, well kept and resort-like, but it's pricey and some finishes feel cheap. One major downside: the main elevator has been out for over two months after lightning struck the building, which has been a real inconvenience. I'd still recommend it for the caring staff and active community.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive: reviewers consistently praise the Summit at Mill Hill for its caring, attentive staff, broad amenity set, and active social environment. Many residents and families describe the staff as wonderful, proactive, and responsive — with named individuals (Joan, Meg, and the facility director in several reviews) singled out for over-and-above service. Commenters emphasize the staff’s helpfulness with health monitoring, coordination of care, and responsiveness to special requests, and families often report feeling reassured about safety and quality of care.

Care quality and medical/therapy services are highlighted as a major strength. Multiple reviewers note on-site doctors and therapy services (PT/OT/ST), at-door therapy availability, and proactive health checks. The facility’s ability to coordinate medical transportation (van service) and provide timely appointments is frequently cited as a convenience that supports resident independence and reduces stress for families. During the COVID period, staff accommodated meal delivery and adapted services, though some reviewers noted a temporary reduction in activities that later resumed more slowly.

Facilities and living spaces receive consistent praise. The property is described as newer, well-maintained, and resort-like with attractive grounds. Amenities that draw repeated positive mention include the heated indoor pool with hot tub and sauna, aquatic exercise programming, a large on-site theatre, multiple activity rooms (art, games, library, movie room), chapel, indoor putting green/golf simulator, and exercise rooms. Apartments are characterized as spacious and well-designed overall, including larger two-bedroom units and in-unit washers/dryers; the community is also pet-friendly with some limits. Several reviews described ground-floor convenience, nearby parking, and a welcoming resident community that contributes to an active social life.

Activities and social programming are among the strongest themes. Reviewers list a wide variety of daily and weekly options: water aerobics, tai chi, yoga, games, karaoke, dancing, sing-alongs, Wednesday happy hour, Saturday night/SNL-style events, guest speakers, day trips, and catered special events (noted examples include shrimp-and-macaroni-and-cheese parties). The schedule is generally described as robust, with many exercise groups, social clubs, and entertainment options that make life more active than living at home for many residents. A few reviews did note that at certain times they observed fewer activities or slower resumption after pandemic restrictions, but this was not the dominant impression.

Dining and service offerings are well regarded but with caveats. Continental breakfast is repeatedly noted as included and well-liked; there are also takeout options a few nights a week and catered events described as high quality. Some reviewers pointed out there is no full on-site restaurant at all times (or that dining options are limited), and others mention that some meal or amenity additions come with extra costs. Several reviewers consider the overall package to be strong value for what they pay, though many also explicitly call the community pricey or express concern about the buy-in and ongoing affordability.

Management and operations receive high marks overall, with many reviewers complimenting helpful, cooperative leadership and the facility’s responsiveness. Praise centers on communication, housekeeping, maintenance, and staff willingness to go the extra mile. That said, reviewers also note a handful of operational negatives: occasional timeliness glitches, one significant maintenance incident (a main elevator out of service for an extended period after a lightning strike), and some criticisms of interior finishes and appliance quality. Specific aesthetic and build critiques appear in multiple comments — Berber carpet that catches things, faux-wood linoleum, and “cheesy” kitchen/living room finishes — and some residents mention smaller kitchen footprints in certain unit types.

Cost is the primary trade-off mentioned. While many reviewers explicitly say the community is "worth it" and even call it one of the best options on the East Coast, there is a clear, repeated note that the community is expensive and may be out of reach for some. Several reviewers mention additional optional charges (customization, certain services) and that not everything is included (electricity, for example). Prospective residents should weigh the high level of service, amenities, and social engagement against the financial commitment required.

In summary, Summit at Mill Hill is portrayed as a modern, amenity-rich senior community with exceptional staff and a lively activity schedule that fosters social connection and safety. It is especially notable for its on-site medical/therapy services, pool/aquatic offerings, and numerous activity spaces. Common concerns center on cost, occasional maintenance or timeliness issues, and some criticisms of interior finishes or smaller kitchens. For seniors and families prioritizing a high level of staff attentiveness, extensive programming, and resort-like amenities — and who can manage the higher cost — reviewers overwhelmingly recommend Summit at Mill Hill. Prospective residents should visit to confirm apartment finishes, ask about any extra fees, and inquire about how operational issues (e.g., maintenance response, elevator reliability) are handled.

    About Summit at Mill Hill

Summit at Mill Hill sits in Guilderland, New York, just a short drive from Albany, and if you're looking for a place that takes care of the chores and gives you time for yourself, this new community might suit you, especially since it opened in December 2019 and has the look and feel of a modern, well-kept place. Residents get to pick between one- and two-bedroom apartments that come with private bathrooms, open kitchens, washers, dryers, and some even have balconies or patios, plus you'll find high-speed internet, cable TV, air conditioning, and all the usual appliances for an easy, independent life. The building's wheelchair accessible and there's a 24-hour call system, so people can feel safe if they ever need help, whether it's day or night, and for those who want extra support, the assisted living services provide help with things like taking medicine, getting dressed, or even bathing, so folks can keep as much independence as possible while still being part of an active community.

There's no big upfront entrance fee or long-term lease, but they do charge a $2,500 non-refundable community fee when you move in, and what stands out here are all the ways to stay busy and connected, whether that's catching a movie in the theater with those big recliner seats, playing pickleball outside, swimming in the pool or relaxing in the hot tub and sauna, or even spending some quiet time in the woodworking shop or out in the community garden where you can grow your own flowers and vegetables. There's a full day spa and on-site beautician services to help residents feel their best, and for people who like to socialize, the social tavern and game rooms are usually busy spots, whether you want to play cards, listen to music, or just talk with neighbors. Folks with pets will find amenities just for them too, and anyone who likes walking or sitting outside can enjoy the landscaped gardens, walking paths, and outdoor patios with chairs, tables, umbrellas, and raised garden beds.

Housekeeping, laundry, move-in help, and even concierge services are included, and private transportation makes it easier to get to appointments or run errands, while the staff, including the facility director, tries to keep everything running smoothly. There's a full schedule of social, educational, and entertainment activities, and people can also join offsite trips planned by the community, which gives everyone chances to be involved and make new friends. Dining happens in a community dining room with restaurant-style meals, and special diets like diabetes or allergies can be accommodated, while breakfast spreads often include fresh fruit, yogurt, and pastries for a more relaxed start to the day. The Summit at Mill Hill also features a chapel for worship and reflection, a library, arts and crafts rooms, a fitness area, garage parking, and a gallery where local artists show their work, and family involvement and resident-run activities play a big part in making everyone feel at home.
