    Compassionate staff, pricey with lapses

I placed my mom at Sunrise and overall we're grateful - the staff are kind, competent and attentive, leadership is accessible, communication is constant, and the bright new building and activities have helped her thrive. The care team is loving and professional; she is known by name and I feel she's safe and well cared for. That said, costs are high (including an assessed fee), staffing shortages sometimes mean slow or missed responses to call buttons, and food/housekeeping quality can be inconsistent. There have also been safety incidents and a few thefts reported - management addressed issues, but it was worrying. In short: excellent, compassionate staff and a beautiful community, but be prepared for high fees and occasional operational lapses.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment for Sunrise of Huntington is mixed but leans toward two distinct patterns: many families and residents praise the facility’s physical plant, leadership-level staff, and certain caregiving teams, while a substantial set of reviews describe inconsistent day-to-day care, staffing problems, safety concerns, and billing/pricing issues.

Facilities and environment: Multiple reviewers consistently highlight that the building is new, bright, modern and well maintained. Common areas, landscaping and grounds are frequently described as lovely and spotless, and apartments and dining areas are often called attractive and well furnished. Practical safety features such as grab bars and check-in boards, plus proximity to family and parking, are mentioned positively. The presence of an on-site memory care unit is a noted convenience for families requiring dementia support.

Care quality and staff: Experiences with staff are polarized. Many reviews praise directors, admissions staff, nurses, and certain care teams as compassionate, professional, attentive and accessible; these reviewers report good 24/7 care, daily or weekly progress updates, personalized attention, and staff who know residents by name. Conversely, a significant number of reviews allege inconsistent or poor frontline caregiving: slow or nonresponsive aide response times to call buttons, aides appearing unhappy or uninterested, rough handling during showers, and delays in emergency assistance (including a reported 50-minute wait and allegations that advertised response times are false). Several comments suggest staffing shortages and difficulty recruiting/retaining qualified aides, leading to variability by shift and a reliance on families or private aides in some cases.

Safety and incident reports: There are serious isolated reports of safety incidents that deserve attention: resident-on-resident assaults resulting in major injury and hospitalization, theft of personal items with inadequate follow-up, and mixed reports about the effectiveness of emergency response systems. While others describe a safe, loving and nurturing environment, these safety-related complaints are significant and were repeated enough to be a notable pattern across reviews.

Dining and activities: Reviews of dining are mixed but skew negative more often than positive. Some families praise the chef’s willingness to customize meals for special diets, while multiple reviewers describe poor food quality or inedible meals. Activity programs receive varied feedback: several reviews applaud a wide range of engaging programming, games, exercise and gardening, but others say activities are sparse, TV-heavy, or not sufficiently engaging, especially early after move-in.

Management, communication and billing: Management and communication also show a split. Many families report responsive leadership, direct contact with directors, frequent updates, and smooth transitions. Others report deceptive sales tactics, overpromises (for example about not needing a private aide), unexpected or arbitrary fees, a reported $930 special assessment, high monthly charges, and billing disputes. Some reviewers explicitly say sales/administration misled them about pricing increases or level of service. Turnover in upper management is cited in some reviews and is associated with operational disruption and staff morale problems.

Consistency and recommendations: The dominant theme is inconsistency. Some residents and families describe Sunrise of Huntington as an outstanding, compassionate community that improved quality of life, provided excellent communication, and created a warm, safe home. Other families experienced what they describe as unacceptable lapses: missing or damaged personal items, unclean rooms or bathrooms, inadequate response to emergencies, unsafe incidents, and deceptive billing. These divergent experiences suggest that outcomes depend strongly on timing, specific staff on duty, and unit/room placement (including memory care vs assisted living). Several reviewers who had poor experiences moved to other communities and reported better care elsewhere; many reviewers who had positive experiences strongly recommend the community.

Bottom line: Sunrise of Huntington offers many strengths — a new, attractive facility, responsive leadership in many cases, specialized dietary accommodations, and caring clinical teams reported by numerous families. At the same time, recurring concerns about frontline staffing, emergency responsiveness, safety incidents, inconsistent cleanliness and questionable billing practices are recurring red flags. Prospective families should tour the building, ask detailed questions about staffing ratios, emergency response protocols, documented incident follow-up, laundry and personal-item handling procedures, and obtain clear, written pricing and fee disclosures before committing. If possible, speak directly with current residents and families about recent trends on the floor/unit of interest and request copies of staffing schedules and incident records to assess current consistency and safety practices.

    About Sunrise of Huntington

Sunrise of Huntington provides a range of senior living options, with choices between independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, short-term stays, and hospice care, and you'll find that the setting feels comfortable and modern, offering clean and inviting rooms, like a bistro, living room area, dining room, garden, porch, salon, theater, and many places to sit and visit with others, which all make it easier for residents to feel at home. The staff, who are fully trained, kind, and always close by, stay aware of each resident's personal needs and limits, so you'll see them helping out with things like meals, medication, bathing, getting dressed, and keeping everybody's life as independent as possible, but what's also important is that the staff like the director even give out their cell phone numbers for families to call if any problems or questions come up at odd times, so you're not left without help. Sunrise of Huntington specializes in memory care through programs like the Reminiscence Program and Terrace Club, which are made for people with Alzheimer's or other kinds of dementia, focusing on safety, mental activity, and reducing confusion or wandering, all in a protected space where activities keep residents engaged. There's a structured schedule of social, educational, and recreational activities every day, with both onsite and offsite events to keep folks active and connected, and it helps that meals are served and there's a beautician on site right there to make daily routines easier. Skilled nursing services are available for people who need medical attention, and respite care gives short-term help to let caregivers take a break or to aid seniors recovering from health events so they can get strong again and go back to their daily lives. Independent living options give active seniors a simple, social environment where daily chores and maintenance are handled, making life more convenient and stress-free, while Dignity Home Care offers aides who come to your home for non-medical support and companionship. With a smaller group of residents, Sunrise of Huntington can offer personal attention, so you'll notice staff, like the culinary director and recreation leader, who really know residents well. The facility is connected to Sunrise Senior Living and is listed on online directories used by families looking for senior housing and care communities, showing that it has a place in the wider senior living world and aims to support both older adults and their families.
