    Understaffed facility with dangerous errors

I had mixed experiences: rehab, some nurses and therapists were excellent, the place is clean, safe, has good food, social activities, well-maintained rooms and attentive security. However it's clearly understaffed with inconsistent staff (some great, some lazy), poor communication, late or unsuitable meals, dirty laundry, an unresponsive social worker, and dangerous nursing errors (wrong insulin timing, stitches not removed); with COVID visitation limits, I would not recommend it for an elderly relative.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed, with clear polarization between positive and negative experiences. Several reviewers praise the facility for strong aspects of rehabilitation and nursing care: attentive nurses, patient therapists, and good rehab outcomes are explicitly mentioned. Positive operational features include a clean and organized reception area, well-maintained resident rooms, visible safety practices (for example, locked wheelchairs), access to outdoor fresh air, and security personnel who are described as great. Multiple reviewers also highlighted planned diets and, in some cases, excellent food and daily social events, including regular activities like Saturday bingo.

However, these favorable reports are counterbalanced by a notable cluster of negative issues that recur across reviews. Staffing appears inconsistent: while some staff are highly praised, others are described as lazy or inattentive, and understaffing is specifically reported. This variability ties into complaints about poor communication from staff and management, and at least one report that a social worker was unresponsive. Several logistical and basic-care concerns were raised, including meals arriving late or not suiting residents' tastes, dirty laundry, and routine follow-up tasks being neglected (one reviewer said stitches were not removed).

More serious clinical and safety concerns are also present in the feedback. One reviewer reported incorrect insulin timing that led to dangerous drops in blood sugar, which is a critical medication management issue. While many reviews emphasize safety-conscious practices, this clinical lapse suggests inconsistent adherence to protocols. Additionally, the COVID-19 visitation restrictions were a source of distress for at least one reviewer, and there are reports of poor overall experiences during the pandemic period.

Facility condition impressions are mixed. Some reviewers explicitly call the building nice, clean, and not old, while others describe older rooms and an older building. This split suggests that perceptions may vary by wing, room assignment, or individual expectation. Activities and social engagement are mentioned positively by those who experience daily events and bingo, but other reviewers note limited entertainment options overall.

Rehabilitation outcomes also show a divide: several reviewers report excellent rehab and attentive therapeutic staff, but others had negative rehab experiences culminating in a resident discharging themselves early. This contrast underscores the variability in care quality and resident satisfaction.

In summary, Jamaica Hospital Nursing Home shows clear strengths in rehabilitation services, certain clinical and therapy staff, cleanliness in public areas, security, and some organized activities. At the same time, there are consistent concerns about staffing levels and consistency, communication breakdowns, occasional lapses in basic clinical care and follow-up, meal timing and quality variability, laundry cleanliness, and the impact of visitation restrictions. Prospective residents and families should weigh these mixed experiences carefully: follow-up questions about staffing ratios, medication administration protocols, laundry and nutrition processes, and how the facility addresses complaints would be prudent before making placement decisions.

    About Jamaica Hospital Nursing Home

Jamaica Hospital Nursing Home sits on the campus of Jamaica Hospital in New York City with a modern four-story design and 228 beds for nursing and rehabilitation, and although it's a busy place there's a quiet feeling inside, partly because the building is set away from the Van Wyck Expressway and has an atrium lobby that runs the height of the building, giving lots of natural light and space, and they really focus on helping people recover so they can leave feeling better about their health, with all sorts of facilities and services made to help residents return to the community quickly, and the staff-registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, unit service coordinators, and licensed therapists-work together using an interdisciplinary approach so they can help restore function and maximize independence. Residents can get high-quality rehabilitative services, regular medical attention, and social services, and the care is tailored, especially for those who need short-term rehabilitation, covering things like orthopedic rehab, post-stroke recovery, IV therapy, post-surgery wound care, and acupuncture, and they start social work intervention within 48 hours of someone arriving, making sure to include the residents and their families for evaluations.

They've got private and semi-private biaxial patient rooms, each one with personal furnishings, a nightstand, bathroom, and an armoire, and patient lounges with fast internet service and lots of books on every floor, plus a fitness center, computers, a small library, art classes, massage therapists, and big dining areas that look out over the atrium, which is pretty nice during meals, and there's on-site laundry and housekeeping too, along with a hair salon, a barber shop, and even a gift shop in the lobby that sells snacks, health items, and greeting cards from Monday to Friday. The recreation rooms see scheduled activities and have space for leisure, and there's a large garden room for parties and holiday dinners, while religious needs are met in an interfaith chapel that holds services and quiet time, and communication services help people keep in touch with loved ones.

There's also a state-of-the-art Sleep Center with four home-like rooms made for overnight sleep studies for adults and kids, where all the equipment-monitors, electrodes, cameras, and microphones-is ready to go, and the experience is as private as it can be, with rooms set up with beds and safety rails for kids, instruction on sleep study kits before they're sent home, ongoing data collection, and thorough analysis afterward, covering a range of studies like polysomnography, CPAP titration, split night studies, maintenance of wakefulness tests (MWT), and multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT) for sleep concerns like apnea and narcolepsy.

Overall, the facility works to meet both health and emotional needs for each person, with a focus on dignity and privacy, and being affiliated with Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and MediSys Health Network means residents have direct access to a wide scope of resources, all administered under the guidance of Thomas Younghans, Vice President and Administrator, in a setting that's comfortable and keeps everyday life going as smoothly as possible for people needing short-term support or longer help.
