    Nice facility but inconsistent care

I found the facility clean, bright and homey with caring, personable staff, excellent meals and a wide range of activities (bingo, exercise, outings), lovely gardens and useful onsite services (MD, PT, salon). Owners are hands-on and it truly feels like a family setting. However, it was short-staffed, communication was inconsistent, some services (hairdresser, virtual doctor during COVID) were unavailable and we experienced a care lapse (bedsores), so I ultimately brought my mother home. Overall a very nice, well-kept place with great amenities, but watch for staffing and care consistency.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with repeated emphasis on a caring, friendly staff and a clean, well-maintained facility. Many reviewers highlighted that residents appear content and engaged; staff are described as helpful, kind, and attentive, and specific staff members (for example, a healthcare coordinator and an entertainment lead) were singled out for praise. The facility is repeatedly described as bright, homelike, and family-oriented, with owners or operators often present and involved in daily life. Cleanliness and upkeep are consistently noted as strengths, as are the physical layout and amenities: roomy private rooms, private accessible bathrooms, laundry facilities, and pleasant communal spaces such as a large family room, library, and salon.

Activities and social life are a major positive theme. Reviews list a wide, regular schedule of activities — nightly bingo, weekly piano, movie nights, exercise and yoga classes, arts and crafts, jewelry making, trivia, group outings on the facility bus, Friday happy hours, and gardening opportunities in raised planters. Entertainment coordination and recurring events contribute to a sense of community; reviewers mention the piano, puzzles, and opportunities to socialize. The gardens, patio, bird feeders, and built-up planters are frequently praised and contribute to both aesthetics and resident engagement, particularly for those who enjoy gardening.

Dining is generally described as appealing and a highlight for many residents and families. Multiple reviewers noted delicious meals and that residents "love the food"; structured mealtimes and a pleasant dining area were reported. A few reviewers mentioned that portions can be large for some residents, but the overall consensus is that food quality is a strength. Value is another recurring positive: several reviewers find the facility less expensive than alternatives while still providing strong services and amenities.

Medical and personal care services are generally presented as available and competent: nurse assistance with medications, onsite physical therapy, an available regular MD and doctor-on-call, and coordinated care through a healthcare coordinator. The facility is described as encouraging independence while maintaining safety, with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms and attentive caregivers. Salon services, laundry, and transportation for outings add to convenience and quality of life.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive tone, there are notable concerns and a handful of negative reports that prospective residents and families should investigate further. Several reviews mention short staffing at times and related operational pressures. One review reported a serious care lapse (bedsores related to wet conditions) and noted that a virtual doctor visit was not provided during COVID — this raises questions about wound care protocols, staffing for personal care, and contingency medical access during emergencies or restrictions. Another thread of concern is inconsistent communication: one reviewer cited a "head nurse controlling" and lack of communication, while a different review described unfriendly owners; however, many other reviews describe owners as hands-on and personable, indicating a mixed or situational experience with management. Some services have been intermittently unavailable (hairdresser, some activities) particularly during COVID restrictions, and there were mentions of occasional laundry issues and unclear pricing for higher levels of assistance.

Patterns and recommendations based on the reviews: Mountain Valley Manor appears to offer a warm, clean, activity-rich environment with strong food and social programming and an overall family-like atmosphere. The most frequent positives are staff kindness and engagement, facility cleanliness, robust activities, and good value. The most important issues to probe in person are staffing levels and consistency (including nursing ratios and wound-care procedures), management communication style and responsiveness, how the facility handled care access during COVID and what virtual/telemedicine options exist now, and any extra costs for enhanced care. If considering Mountain Valley Manor, ask about recent staffing changes, examples of how care concerns are escalated and resolved, current availability of salon services and activities, and written policies on infection control and family visitation during outbreaks.

In summary, reviews portray Mountain Valley Manor as a well-maintained, socially active, and affordable adult home with many satisfied residents and families. While the majority of feedback is positive about daily life, food, and staff, there are a few serious concerns reported (notably around wound care and communication) that warrant direct follow-up during a tour or meeting with management to ensure standards are consistently met for an individual resident's needs.
