    Inconsistent care with serious risks

I had a mixed experience. Some teams-skilled rehab therapists, a few nurses and social workers-were outstanding, renovated rooms looked nice and parts of the facility were clean and supportive. But I also saw chronic understaffing, unprofessional behavior, poor housekeeping (bad odours, fruit flies, lost laundry), unsafe incidents (falls, meds on the floor, bedsores), bad food and billing/management problems. In short: it can be excellent in places but is inconsistent and carries real risks-inspect carefully before trusting a loved one here.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Midway Nursing Home are highly polarized, with multiple detailed accounts describing both exceptionally positive clinical and rehabilitative care and, conversely, deeply troubling reports of neglect, poor sanitation, and safety lapses. Positive accounts tend to focus on the facility's rehab, therapy, wound care, and specific compassionate staff; negative accounts describe systemic problems with cleanliness, staffing, medication handling, and management. The pattern suggests inconsistent performance across units and shifts: some residents experience attentive, professional care and good outcomes, while others suffer serious neglect and unsafe conditions.

Care quality and clinical outcomes: A recurring positive theme is a very strong rehabilitative program—several reviewers credit therapists and skillful rehab staff with significant recovery and progress. Specific clinicians (therapists and wound-care nurses) received praise for encouraging, patient-centered work that led to improved mobility and wound healing. However, many reviews describe poor clinical care in other cases: medication errors (including meds on the floor), possible overmedication, missed wounds and bandage changes, uncharged wound vacs, unsuctioned tracheotomies, development of bedsores, and delayed/insufficient nursing responses. These serious clinical concerns are often linked to staffing shortages and absenteeism, especially shortages of CNAs and RNs.

Staffing, behavior, and communication: Staffing inconsistency is one of the most frequently cited issues. Several families report compassionate, professional, and helpful staff members (including social workers named positively), while a large number of reviews recount rude or dismissive nurses and CNAs, front desk misbehavior, and alleged abusive conduct. Communication varies widely: some reviewers praise accessible administration, clear medication-change discussions, and strong social work/discharge planning; others describe lost paperwork, poor follow-up, unreachable staff, and a sense that leadership is detached or dishonest. Multiple reports indicate a lack of accountability after incidents, with apologies offered but little disciplinary action.

Facility condition, housekeeping, and maintenance: Reviews conflict on environment: some floors and renovated rooms are described as clean, inviting, and hotel-like, while many reports focus on filthy rooms, strong odors, fruit flies, mold, garbage outside rooms, soiled linens/clothes thrown in bags, and general poor housekeeping. Maintenance problems—nonfunctional AC leading to hot rooms, ongoing elevator outages, and slow or ineffective repairs—compound negative impressions. Even where renovations have been completed in parts of the building, reviewers still note pervasive cleanliness and hygiene deficits that undermine those upgrades.

Safety incidents and infection control: Multiple reviewers report serious safety incidents: falls resulting in head injuries, force-feeding episodes, residents left unattended for hours, unexplained wrist wounds, and failure to assist residents in restrooms. Infection control concerns are significant: COVID-19 mismanagement, outbreaks with poor communication, reports of infections due to wound/vac/diaper issues, and readmissions to hospital. Some reviewers explicitly call for regulatory investigation or indicate that the Department of Health should intervene. These reports raise red flags about supervision, clinical protocols, and emergency responsiveness.

Dining and daily living: Dining experiences are inconsistent. Several reviewers praised well-prepared, delicious meals and attentive dining staff, while others describe cold, inedible food, limited weekend offerings ("scraps"), and poor nutrition. Grooming and personal care are another area of conflict: some relatives report well-groomed, nourished residents; others recount residents unbathed for days, soiled pull-ups, untrimmed nails, and overall neglect of basic hygiene.

Administration, billing, and systems: Administrative competence is mixed. Positive reviews mention accessible leadership and solid discharge planning. Negative reviews highlight billing problems, incompetence with Medicaid paperwork or the Medicaid office, lost medical or administrative paperwork, and a slow or insensitive process after a resident’s passing. Several reviewers describe attempts to cover up or give inconsistent explanations following incidents.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The strongest pattern is variability—highly positive, sometimes exceptional clinical care and rehabilitation exist alongside credible reports of neglect, unsanitary conditions, and safety failures. Many positives are tied to specific teams or individuals (therapy, wound care nurses, certain social workers, evening nursing teams), whereas negatives tend to be systemic (housekeeping, staffing levels, maintenance, management communication). For families considering this facility, an in-person, repeated inspection is advisable: tour the exact unit/floor, ask about staffing ratios (RNs/CNAs per shift), infection-control procedures, medication administration protocols, laundry and personal effects tracking, recent inspection reports or citations, and policies for incident reporting and family notification. During stays, monitor grooming, turning schedules, wound care, medication administration, and communication responsiveness. If serious issues arise, document them, escalate to administration and the social worker, and consider contacting local ombudsman or regulatory bodies if unresolved.

Conclusion: Midway Nursing Home elicits strong praise for rehabilitation, certain clinical staff, and pockets of clean, well-managed care, but also a substantial volume of alarming reports indicating neglect, sanitation failures, and safety lapses. The facility appears capable of providing excellent care in some circumstances but also shows recurring systemic weaknesses that have led to harm in other cases. Due diligence, careful selection of unit/room, clear written agreements about care expectations, and active ongoing family engagement are essential for anyone placing a loved one at this facility.
