    Caring staff, clean, homey community

I live here and feel at home - the staff and manager are outstanding, caring, friendly, and always helpful. Meals are excellent with great variety, communal dining and social activities (bingo) make it social and welcoming. The place is very clean, has private bathrooms, fresh linens, 24-hour safety, washer/dryer, pet-friendly spaces like a sunroom/garden, and a convenient location. It's a small, close-knit, family-feeling facility, but rooms are tight with limited storage and the price I was quoted ended up higher than the website. I'm happy here and would recommend touring.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews of The New Burton Homestead is strongly positive, with the clearest and most repeated strengths centering on staff quality, cleanliness, food, and the homelike community feel. Staff are frequently described as wonderful, friendly, caring, helpful, and knowledgeable; reviewers repeatedly note that staff go out of their way, provide good communication, and make residents feel welcome and safe. Tours are described as excellent and outstanding, with efficient and friendly tour guides and managers who engage visitors and families effectively. The small size of the facility appears to contribute to a close-knit, family atmosphere that many reviewers value, and several residents explicitly state they feel at home and comfortable there.

Facility and room-level feedback is mixed but leans positive on maintenance and safety. Multiple reviews highlight clean rooms, fresh linens, 24-hour safety, and practical safety features such as a fold-down shower seat. There are a number of useful on-site amenities noted: a hairdressing room, reading area, sunroom, garden, benches outside, communal living room, and laundry services (washer/dryer included). Some updates and improvements are in progress, suggesting management attention to maintenance and modernization. The physical layout of the property, including easy access to buildings and pleasant interior wall colors, is called out positively in several summaries.

Dining and communal living are strong selling points. Reviewers consistently praise the food, describing it as outstanding, homecooked, and varied, with good daily meal participation and social interaction at dinner. The presence of an open or communal kitchen and communal cooking/dining areas supports social engagement; coffee and cookies and small communal offerings were also mentioned positively. However, the dining area itself is described by multiple reviewers as small, which may limit flexibility during busier meal times or larger events.

The small scale of the facility is a double-edged theme in the reviews. Many residents and visitors appreciate the intimate, home-like vibe and the sense of community that comes from a smaller population: friendly residents, a welcoming atmosphere, and caregivers who know the residents well. At the same time, reviewers repeatedly call out small private rooms with limited storage and a cramped interior layout that reflect the building's original structure. Outdoor space is limited and some reviewers regret the location on a highway corner and wish for a more scenic view or a larger yard.

Activities and programming are less clearly described across the reviews. Few specific activities are mentioned beyond bingo and general social dining; several summaries state that no detailed activities were discussed during tours. This suggests either a limited formal activity program or an underreporting of activities in the review set. For prospective residents who prioritize a robust activity calendar, this is a notable information gap to address during a visit.

Cost and transparency are another area of mixed feedback. Some reviewers describe the pricing as affordable, but at least one review explicitly calls the price high for two residents and notes instances where the price seen in person was higher than the website quote. This discrepancy indicates a potential issue with pricing clarity or variable rates depending on unit type or services. Families touring the facility should confirm current rates, what is included (meals, laundry, cable), and any differences between online quotes and in-person pricing.

In summary, The New Burton Homestead is consistently praised for its caring staff, cleanliness, warm community atmosphere, and strong food program. It appears well suited to people seeking an intimate, home-like assisted living environment with attentive caregiving and solid daily amenities. Key trade-offs reported by reviewers include small private rooms with limited storage, a compact dining and building layout, limited outdoor space and scenic views, and occasional concerns about pricing transparency. Prospective residents and families should plan a tour (reviews indicate tours are strong) to assess room size and storage needs, ask detailed questions about activities and programming, and confirm up-to-date pricing and what services are included.

    About The New Burton Homestead

The New Burton Homestead sits over on 401 Floyd Ave in Rome, NY, and you'll see right away that they've got a big yard with lawn chairs and tables under the trees, which makes a nice spot for sitting outside, getting some air or talking with neighbors. This place lets people keep pets, both dogs and cats, and visiting pets are allowed too, but the resident has to take care of their own animals. You'll find the senior living suites have different layouts-there are single rooms with private bathrooms, double rooms that can fit a partner or friend, and horseshoe-shaped suites, and those bathrooms usually have walk-in showers with handrails and call bells for safety. The building has two floors, there's an elevator, and all the hallways and common spaces are wheelchair accessible, including the ground floor units.

People who live here mostly choose independent living, but assisted living and memory care are both available, and there are services for folks who need rehabilitation, whether it's for the long-term or just a short stay. There's also medication management and personal care, like reminders, bathing, dressing, shaving help, and cueing if someone needs a nudge for daily routines. Meals are cooked at the facility and served daily-three meals a day, with the option for guest meals if family or friends come by, and snacks and drinks in between. They've got communal dining areas and smaller kitchenettes in some rooms, and you'll see things like linen service, house cleaning, laundry, and bed making are all part of what's offered.

You'll find beauty salon services right on site, fitness and wellness programs, a library for quiet reading, games for recreation, and music activities with radios and CD players in the rooms. There's a garden for folks who like horticultural activities or just want some fresh air, and the schedule is always packed with seasonal events, arts and crafts, outings, field trips, sports and lawn games, and plenty of social activities aimed at making friends and staying engaged. There's also general counseling and healthcare wellness services, and family planning and birth control clinics, which is something you don't see everywhere.

Wi-Fi and cable or satellite TV are available in both private units and community areas, and each unit has closet space and a safe deposit box. The mail gets delivered and picked up each day, and there's guest parking plus regular transportation for things like shopping or medical appointments. Rooms have call bells for emergencies, and visits from family are flexible, with a secured entry for safety and privacy. Nurses are on staff part-time, and the other staff is trained in resident rights and stays friendly and helpful. They offer services in English, Spanish, and Russian. The yard, outdoor patio, garden, three living rooms with TVs, and a sitting room make it easy to gather or find a quiet spot to oneself. The place accepts private payment, checks, and credit cards.

The New Burton Homestead is a family-oriented community, built for active, friendly seniors who want to live in a place that feels like home but still offers help and company when needed, letting each resident enjoy as much independence as possible.
