    Disgusting facility; rude, neglectful care

I had a terrible experience and would avoid this place at all costs. The facility was disgusting - bad odor, maintenance neglected, cockroaches in food and dog-food-like meals - and most staff were unprofessional and rude; nurses talked over me, hung up, and care quality was poor. A few people (Ms. Catalina and the nurse in charge of meds) were friendly and helpful, and an initial interview for a discharged family member went well, but overall I cannot recommend it.

    Summary review

The review summaries for Mariners Residence, Inc. show a highly mixed — often sharply polarized — set of impressions. On the positive side, a subset of reviewers praised individual staff members and initial experiences: multiple comments call the staff friendly, polite, respectful, helpful and professional, and one reviewer specifically mentions Ms. Catalina by name as a positive. A few reviewers describe their experience as "fantastic" or "good service" and explicitly recommend the facility. These positive comments appear concentrated around first impressions and interactions with specific employees.

However, the dominant and most serious themes in the reviews are negative and relate to care quality, cleanliness, and communication. Several reviews accuse nursing staff of being rude and unprofessional and indicate poor overall quality of care. There are explicit, alarming sanitation complaints — cockroaches reported in food, pervasive bad odors, and descriptions of the environment as "disgusting." Food quality is also criticized strongly, with meals compared to "dog food," which when paired with pest reports raises meaningful concerns about food safety and kitchen hygiene.

Facility upkeep and maintenance are another recurrent concern. Reviewers mention that the facility is "not kept up" and suffers maintenance neglect; those complaints tie into the smell and sanitation concerns and can compound the appearance and experience of poor care. Multiple comments indicate that residents are treated poorly or with disrespect, and one reviewer detailed that a family member was discharged, implying problematic clinical or administrative decisions that affected residents and families.

Communication and management issues appear repeatedly. Reviewers report unprofessional interactions from staff responsible for medication and care coordination — examples include staff talking over family members, not listening to concerns, and even hanging up on callers. There is also confusion about admission policies (an "age requirement of 70" was mentioned as unclear), suggesting that administrative policies may be inconsistently applied or poorly explained to prospective residents and families. Some reviews go so far as to warn others to "avoid at all costs," characterize the population as "indigent residents," or otherwise advise against the facility, indicating strong dissatisfaction among a portion of reviewers.

Taken together, these summaries paint a picture of inconsistent performance: some staff and initial contacts provide positive, professional service, while other areas — especially day-to-day nursing care, cleanliness, food service, maintenance, and communication — are sources of significant complaints. The presence of both glowing and very negative summaries suggests variability in staffing, management oversight, or circumstances affecting different residents differently. The most urgent red flags from these reviews are sanitation issues (cockroaches, foul odors), poor-quality meals, reports of disrespectful or rude care, and broken lines of communication with staff responsible for medication and resident interactions.

For someone evaluating Mariners Residence, Inc., the reviews indicate the need for careful, targeted due diligence: observe the dining and food-service areas, inspect general cleanliness and odors, ask for details about staffing and supervision (particularly nursing and medication administration), clarify admission and age policies in writing, and seek references from current families who have recent, ongoing experience. The facility appears capable of positive interactions in some encounters, but the repeated and specific negative reports around hygiene, care quality, and communication are serious and should be directly addressed with facility management before making placement decisions.
