    Compassionate staff, strong memory care

I moved my mother into this brand-new, beautiful community and I'm very pleased: the staff (shoutout to April and Kristina) are compassionate, attentive and respectful, memory care is strong, activities and meals are excellent, and the place feels like home. The move-in was smooth, communication and 24-hour nursing gave me confidence, and the building is clean and well managed. It's expensive and there were a few minor kinks (billing/occasional communication), but overall I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews for Sunrise of New Dorp are overwhelmingly positive, with recurring praise focused on the newness and beauty of the facility, the warmth and professionalism of staff, and a lively, home-like community atmosphere. Many reviewers describe a smooth transition for residents, strong family communication, and a vibrant activity calendar. Multiple families explicitly state they would highly recommend the community, and several identify Sunrise of New Dorp as one of the best options in the area.

Staff and care quality: The strongest and most consistent theme is the quality of staff and caregiving. Reviewers use words like compassionate, kind, patient, respectful, diligent, and empathetic to describe caregivers, nursing staff, and administrative personnel. Physical therapy and nursing teams are described as knowledgeable and compassionate, and families appreciate 24-hour nursing coverage. Specific staff members—most notably Kristina and April—are repeatedly praised for being approachable, helpful, and going "above and beyond." Many reviewers highlight that staff support extends beyond day-to-day care (e.g., attending funerals, providing hands-on move-in support), which reinforces perceptions of dignity and respect for residents.

Memory care and programming: Memory-care services receive favorable mentions: memory stations, fidget toys, and a dedicated memory-care floor are cited as positives. Activities are consistently praised and appear to be a major strength—live music, art classes, games, trivia, themed events, and guest-friendly programming that invites visitors. Reviewers frequently note that activities are tailored to residents’ interests and abilities, and that social opportunities help residents make friends and stay engaged. The community also emphasizes partnerships in care, with care managers and coordinators leading teams to support residents’ needs.

Facilities and amenities: The facility’s physical attributes are repeatedly commended. Reviewers describe the community as brand-new, bright, pristine, and beautifully landscaped, with multiple outdoor areas and private visiting spaces. Apartments are described as spacious and clean, and there are frequent notes about modern amenities and a home-like vibe. The community’s involvement with the local area and its ability to host events (including holiday celebrations and community outreach) are additional positives that reviewers mention.

Dining and events: Dining receives mostly positive comments, with some reviewers calling the food gourmet and others praising special dining events like steak night. Several reviews explicitly state residents are well-fed and that dining is enjoyable. A minority of reviewers mention repetitive food as a negative. Overall, dining combined with a strong calendar of activities contributes to the sense that there is "always something fun to do."

Management, communication, and administrative issues: While many families praise communication and the admissions/tour process, there are recurring administrative concerns that several reviews raise. The most significant issues are billing errors, lack of price transparency, and instances where families felt charged for care not rendered. A few reviews mention poor communication related to hospitalizations or care coordination. There are also isolated reports of unprofessional behavior or selective rule enforcement by management. These problems appear less common than the positive reports but are significant because they affect trust and financial expectations.

Safety and isolated negative reports: Most reviews describe the community as safe and secure, but there are isolated, specific safety concerns. One reviewer said there was no nighttime security and reported an aggressive, constantly barking dog in the lobby that made the community feel unsafe and lacked accountability. These reports are not widespread but are important outliers that prospective families should ask about during tours and when reviewing policies on pets and security.

Pricing and value: Cost is a clear and frequent concern. Multiple reviewers describe the community as expensive or pricey, and some explicitly make their recommendation conditional on affordability. Combined with the billing and transparency issues noted above, cost and financial clarity appear to be the most consistent areas of dissatisfaction across otherwise positive reviews.

Overall recommendation and nuance: Synthesis of the reviews suggests Sunrise of New Dorp offers a high-quality, modern, and activity-rich environment with exemplary frontline staff and strong memory-care programming. The main caveats for prospective residents and families are price, the need to confirm transparent billing practices, and to probe any site-specific safety or pet-policy issues. Visiting in person, meeting the praised staff (Kristina and April), clarifying all fees, and asking about security and pet management will help families confirm whether the community is the right fit. For many reviewers, the combination of care quality, engaged programming, and the facility’s condition made Sunrise of New Dorp an excellent choice despite higher costs; for a smaller number, administrative and safety concerns tempered their recommendation.

    About Sunrise of New Dorp

Sunrise of New Dorp offers housing and care for seniors who need assisted living, independent living, memory care, skilled nursing, or continuing care, and this place puts a lot of focus on keeping everything safe without taking away anyone's independence, whether it's the rooms, the hallways, or the community spaces, you'll find rails and easy-to-use features all around, which is helpful especially if your memory or your mobility isn't what it used to be, and there's a warm feeling here since there's a concierge named Linda Meyers who has a reputation for being honest, caring, and someone people trust when they've got a concern or a question, and the staff get special training for memory care so residents who need programs like the Reminiscence Program or the Terrace Club get help from people who know what to do in tough moments, and you'll see that the building has amenities like a salon, private dining, a bistro, patios, and community spaces for all kinds of activities and parties, which makes life here pretty lively without feeling crowded. Residents can join activities that fit their abilities-everything from social events to programs that keep their bodies and minds active, and since there are skilled nurses here too, help's always nearby if someone needs it, whether it's just for a short-term stay or something longer like hospice or Dignity Home Care, and there's a strong push to make the support work just right for what each person wants, not just what they need on paper, and the atmosphere aims for friendliness, respect, and real community, not just a place to live but a place to stay connected with others, and pets are allowed so it feels a bit more like home. The menus focus on healthy, tasty meals, and the whole building is set up so you feel safe but also free to come and go in the community spaces, and if you take a tour, you'll see how the programming tries to let people do as much as they can on their own, but there's always help when it's needed, whether it's memory care, nursing help, or just someone to talk to about a story from years ago, which is something they share in the Sunrise Stories section. Sunrise of New Dorp also offers wellness programs, community activities, and has earned Sunrise Awards for its commitment to quality, and while it's a modern community opening soon, there are many choices for care and comfort based on the latest research about aging, so life here aims to feel supportive, flexible, and as dignified as possible for everyone.
